Hi all, It feels great to join the CGTalk community and to take part in a contest so grande & prestigious. I'm fairly new in 3D. So I'm here to have a lot of fun and learn from everyone's works and comments. I'm wishing all the participants good luck :) This is how the story goes:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The time is year 4013. 700 years after we won the Great War against the alien race ‘Agrashi’; the listening post in the outskirts of ‘Nijhum’ solar system is picking up a faint disturbance some light-years away. A probe is sent to investigate.
The war left most of the planetary bases and colonies in ruins. Planet Earth became completely uninhabitable by 2076, and the human civilization was scattered in different solar systems – in planetary colonies and 10 colonial ships. The survivors of the Great War moved to planet ‘Boshoti’ in ‘Nijhum’ solar system. Accompanied by its solitary moon ‘Onushari’, ‘Boshoti’ resembles Earth in many ways.
On the ragged terrains of ‘Onushari’ remains dormant ‘Proloy’ – the super weapon that wiped out the ‘Agrashi’ mothership and won the war. The cannon draws energy from the core of the moon, and fires long range EMP pulse. Due to some design flaws in ‘Proloy’, it is feared that firing the cannon again might destroy the moon completely.
The listening post has lost contact with the probe. But its last transmissions have been deciphered. It detected hyperspace signatures of multiple ‘Agrashi’ ships. The enemy has returned!
We knew they would come. We are prepared this time. Hidden in the dust clouds near Boshoti, space dock ‘Bondor’ treasures our best bet – ‘The Shikari Fleet’. The fleet is comprised of numerous battlecruisers, dreadnaughts and assault crafts. ‘Proloy’ is the last resort, and will be used if everything else fails.
IMHO, the following elements are potentially spectacular (Hopefully I can present them that way):
-The advanced battleships
-The cannon
-The united efforts to the save the planet and the entire human civilization
- Whatever else I can add later on :) really hoping to capture the mood of the story in the composition…

All the names used in the story are in Bangla, my mother tongue. Here are the meanings, so that everyone understands :)
Agrashi = Invader(s)
Nijhum = Quiet
Boshoti = Residence
Onushari = Follower
Proloy = Doom
Bondor = Port
Shikari = Hunter

Here's the quickest possible concept sketch I could come up with. At this stage, I'm not worried about exact looks of the models. Just roughly trying to show what I want the final composition to look like. I'll play around more with the camera angles once my models are done.

Hey Monsit, nice to meet u too. Glad to hear u like the concept. I'll try my best to incorporate something original in my models, like u said, adding something from my culture... if I can. Thanks for your advice :)
P&P and Digital Beat, really appreciate your comments. I'll start on the design of the Battleship first, then the Cannon on the moon. I'll submit the drawings (gotta warn u, I majorly suck at drawing) when they're done. Guess I'd better hurry up 'cos so much to do in just 2 months... hope I'll finish this on time.

Hmm... just 2 montsh to go. No proper designs for the models yet. I'm delayed due to the exams and only getting started. Now I've decided to show the Battleship / Fighter Carrier thingie and the fighters preparing to go to battle or already engaged in battle, with the planet in the background. This way I'll be able to add more detail to the models and finish on time. So still sticking to the same story but showing less models with more details hopefully.
If things go better than expected and I have too much time to spare, the first image concept will come to life. Otherwise, I'll continue with the rest of it after the challenge is over. Not really happy with the decision but it's the right one considering the time factor.

Some decisions made, the ship models will be organic! Mechanical ships like Rodger Young and Battlstar Galactica is not what I want to do. They are fascinating, but I'll stick to organic. I mean... who doesn't like some curvature?... ahem... Well, it's gonna be challenging putting weapons and details on that organic ship. For better or worse, the sketches are coming in the next few days. stay tuned :)

Hey all, Sorry for being 'Invisible' for nearly 2 weeks or so. I've been down with a terrible tropical flu. Feeling better today and getting started with the challenge again... *cough cough* :( Halfway thru with the big battleship sketch. Modeling starts in 2/3 days. I'll be so pissed off if something gets in the way this time...
Yes CG-AvangarD I'm back :twisted:

Hi all, here's the simple sketch showing top and side profile of the big battleship. It would be about 500m-1km long. Would be a nightmare to add all the details...

You say the it would eba nightmare to add all the details... I say that if you put the details in it will give people nightmares. You want to evoke something in the viewer.
If the veiwer feels that everthing is routine in your image then they will just look and not feel an impression.
Dive right on in and play around. This is fun work, sure it might be hard , but the reward is what you get went you finish.
It is good that you integrating your culture into the image. The image will be an expression of you. The more you can identify with it and pour your own feelings into it, will make it easier to sit in front of it and conquer the work.

hmm, it's good to get posts with different perspectives, like the one u posted here :) Really appreciate it! Yes, I'm positive and always picture the glass as half-full, never half-empty. But I guess it's a realistic assumption that the final image may or may not live up to my expectations due to time constraints and some other factor. Here's where the word 'nightmare' popped up out of frustration. But I'll try to put in as much details as time and my skill level permit.
About the culture, well... I feel some clarification is warranted at this stage. With all the spaceships and techy stuff going on, it's been difficult to incorporate the cultural elements... to be honest :shrug: Other than picking some names in Bangla, I haven't been focusing on the cultural aspects very keenly 'cos the story is about the entire human race. And that leaves room for me to think beyond the cultural boundaries. Wholeheartedly agree though, it's easier to work on things I'm familiar with.
Thanks a lot, Radulan, for coming here and sharing your thoughts. I'm now into modeling the battleship so please visit again to see when I've posted some modeling updates. C & C help so much and are always welcome from everyone :thumbsup:

Hi! Nice sketch of the ship, I am waiting to see it modeled with lots of details ;)
You still have a lot of time, I also have not too much time to work on my entry, but it's fun and a nice way to learn ;)

The concept looks pretty good and it's a cool story. :thumbsup:
Don't worry about the deadline - the more you worry the slower you get! :)
This contest is mostly about fun and learning. Even if you don't get to finish your pic on time, you can always do it later and in the meantime you probably will have learned stuff that will help you.
I hope you don't get any more setbacks.
Good luck!

Nice start for your modeling!
As others have said, the idea of having something from your culture in it is a relly good one. Perhaps you could use some local patterns for the surface texture?
Good luck, and keep updating :thumbsup:
