final image reworked

Well guys, I could not resist to try and improve this image, so I did a new background and reworked the feel of the image. Hope you guys like it!

I added it to my finished work thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=308776) and the overview of the project is there as well

hi everybody, been working on this character lately. It's from a concept by Aaron St. Goddard who kindly gave me permission to model it. It's pretty much ready for z-brush...here are some earlier wips up to the latest update and the concept. Lemme know what u think.

As usual BlackNull, your work is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I wanted to be one of the first to reply to your new project, so I don't have much for crits. I just wanted to tell you, I admire you work, and I'll definitely watch this one.

Awsome work Pierre, gald you decided to share this with us on cgtalk. Nice to see that the modeling phase has been finished, if your textures are anything like the ones on Vlassic this is gonne be amazing, I was wondering if you were planning on taking him into zbrush by any chance? Looking forward toy our progress.

The face itself looks great. WIth that much detail you've modeled i doubt if there is anything else you'd need to zbrush it for. The face texture is pretty solid with very similar color schemes and feel as with your other models. I'm glad you've established your own style and have chosen to not commit the same sharpness of the creases of your modeling as with your other models this time around.

My only crtique is i think the shoulder blades could be defined more as with the heels of his feet. Right now his heel looks like there is an accodian shoved in it. I would use proper reference for the back of the foot.

Cheers.

Thanks so much for your interest to this character, my computer wasn't working for a few days but now I'm back on track with a little update. The torso is still a w.i.p, playing around with the textures...

TheUnkind, ivanisavich, nubian, jdsb, foreverendering, thjazi, I N F I N I T E, rustbucket, Flex Giddy, webhead: Thanks guys

slice56, Crackjoe: Thanks a lot, the horns were not finished but now for this update they are more dirty.

Lordrych: hey! thanks, about the centaur, I did continue it almost to completion and I'm planning to post some updates when i get back to it. I didn't end up doing much in zb except for the bump map, so the modeling was all done in xsi.

Jinian: Thanks for your comment, you're right I didn't need to do much in zb...altho I could have pushed it further in detail, I felt like just playing around with the textures more. I definitely need to touch up some modelin', especially the heel like you've mentionned.

mac_andre: Thanks, I wanted to stick with the concept for the shape of the eyes, maybe I'll play around with some face shapes tho.

m@lonet: Thanks, I want to make him a bit wet-looking like you've mentionned, still playing around with spec.

airvinny: thanks buddy, I miss Canada too!

TES: Thanks, just a little zb work for the bumps, the rest was done in xsi and photoshop.

learner88: thanks, nothing is final with me hehe, still playing around with the shader.

bump looks a little strong, or maybe its just too contrasty on the chest, I think it'd be nice if the abdomen and maybe some of the pecs were a different kind of surface, with a different diffuse pattern, perhaps something softer.

just some ideas, sweet stuff man

thanks for the replies guys, I focused on the torso for this update trying to improve it taking in consideration the given advices. I'll work on the back next.

XsifoX: hey buddy, thanks for your comment, xsi5 is looking ever so sweet indeed. *sigh xsi....

rblitz7: Thanks! I only had that one reference image to interpret it in 3D; a lot of fun that way because I can use my imagination to create the rest. :wip:

jdsb: thanks, hope you like this update

KWAK: thanks for your advice kol, really helps. This update is still contrasty... but keeping it in mind.

Crackjoe: Thanks! my arm can feel those cuts too...j/k

visualboo: thanks dude, I'm keeping the updates comin' see!!!

Mr. Positive: Thanks, I did make the pecs bigger than the ref, I decided to add a bit more volume for the 3D interpretation.

I agree with kwak, the bump is a bit too contrasty and bumpy. It could use some softening and the diffuse texture could use more color detail and contrast on the abdomen and chest area. I like how the bumpiness trancends from bumpy to soft around the neck area, you could use more of this transition for the chest and abdomen area as well.

Just my two cents. but great texture detail work you've got there.

Hi Pierre. Again your work is too amazing for me to crit. Obviously, because I rely on YOU to crit my work. I really need to ask though, if you have any special brushes or techniques to texture your models. They are always amazing, and I can't help but want to aspire to that level. I'm only about 6 months into 3D animation though, so I have a ways to go. Thanks for any help you may have. Hey maybe you can post it on your new site as a tutorial? I already check your site every day or so to see if its updated :) Have a good one Pierre. 5 Stars.

Also, I know its not in the original concept image, but maybe give him some sort of chains/handcuffs or a legcuff with a broken chain on it. Or some sort of metal accessories/hardware. I know you probably won't implement it, but its just a thought. I would think someone somewhere would want to wield the power of this beast, and TRY to train it.
Good Luck

Sup everybody! Thanks for all your comments. Pulled a late night but I wanted to have an update showing some back views of the model.

pablov: thanks buddy, I'll do some tweaking to the chest keeping what u said in mind.

jdsb, enthombed, LATROMMI_SUINEG, AndrewHwang: big thanks guys

Jinian: Thanks for all your crits and ideas, always helps

Ni_20: thanks, doesn't hurt to give it a quick try

Isurus: Ooloxes generally don't take baths, the water is very rare where it lives, mostly rocks. But to show you guys, I had to powerwash him a bit, maybe I'll let him run wild a little to get him dirty. :D

OGRE EX: Thanks! don't hesitate to crit, it really helps to have so many eyes on this. It's also good practice to try to find what could be improved in a model :) I was thinking of giving him some extra stuff, I'm still undecided... good luck with your model

formoso: Thanks. Yup, I think there should be some flaps of skin, I'm not sure how far I can push my bump map though, maybe I'll go back to modeling for that.

10-08-2005, 01:01 AM
Hey man. I have really been loving watching this one, I think my favourite musclemonsta I have seen so far o_o The concept is a little craggier overall but going by Aaron's style, and your own style, the slight shift ppl mentioned of a little more muscle seems to be working well. I really love the tiny bright owl eyes and the sharp little mouth, even just that slightly turning pose of the head is giving him a lot of character too. I feel like I should crit somewhere hehe, so maybe I'm thinking the rolls of fat on his back are looking a little even, maybe make one of them heavier, or vary the space between their ends and the backbone? Heh I think the back/shoulder cuts work even better than the belly ones possibly.

Really, really nice o_O Do you have a reel around man, or in the making maybe *hope*

Please do continue ^_^

Wow, next to Vlassic, I love this one too. Reminds me of the characters for that game Gears of War. I have nothing to crit at all...this is five star worthy. Well, for additions, what if you put blood all around his mouth and stuff....? As if he chewed the crap out of a human body.

And I would make his eyes glow too if he hides in the dark...

:deal: shouldn't you be like a lead modeler somewhere by now :buttrock: hehe oolox is looking so good bro. my only suggestion is see what the feet look like if you give them a more rough scaly texture. much like the hands/thighs, the feet should look rougher due to the fact that they are bare and traverse rough lands by the looks of the character. just seems fitting to make them look more worn and torn

Really good job. I'm wondering if you could make the skin between the fingers more translucent (either with SSS or just by making it more flesh-colored instead of rock-like) because between the fingers the skin is always thinner and light passes through it. Right now it looks a bit too much like a painted statue because of the lack of visible changes in skin thickness.

Hi guys, how do you think this big beast got his wounds from?? Here is a WIP of the wolf that has just been hunted, revived an old model. It's really a cross between a wolf/dog/thylacine. The scene takes place right after the hunt, and traces of blood will be shown on the "rock weapon", snow and such... The pose will be adjusted so that the wolf's body remains in the beast's right hand. Hope you like it.

I'm currently playing a video game right now with a character head design very similar to your Oolox. It's called "Shadow of the Colossus". If you haven't seen this game, check it out to see what im talking about. Are you drawing inspiration from it by any chance? But, i really do think it was just a coincidence.

hi guys, I'm pretty much done the modeling of the wolf. Just have to fix some of the wrinkles, I was pulling a "vampire slayer" look for his nose wrinkles but I'd like to alter them a bit as a friend suggested me. For now I'm going back to the oolox for a bit, fixing stuff here and there. I decided to get rid of the circular platform idea and instead having a ground that leaves me more space and freedom to have him in his native environment.

Jinian: Hey, I haven't heard of that game but I'm gonna check it out, I'm curious about it. Glad you like the new look, maybe a bit too dry on the torso?

Killer work man, honestly. I'm was thinking of modelling a pitbull and this is inspiring. Anyway, the front legs look a little bit odd to be.. maybe make them a bit thicker as they go up, they look quite rigid at the moment.

The silhouette and poly flow look great.

Damn, that dog looks awesome as hell..I can't wait until you put fur on it. On Oolox, the spikes on his head look like metal, unless it is intended. The dog should have some red eyes too.

Have you seen the game Gears of War...?

First, I would like to say, " great work! " Thank you for all the pics when you update and for answering very single person that replies here. We know that it is very time consuming and we all apreciate it.

Now, to the real deal stuff. *Stupid Question Alert*

1.What sizes are all the textures for the this character?

head
torso
arms
legs

...pixels, inches,or what?

Thank you in advance

Here is a composition test for the rotation of the model, there are a few things on my list to fix already but thought I'd show you guys. :wip:

sarNz, learner88, smaddl: Thanks guys :)

Woof: Thanks for your comment, hopefully the model being rigged and posed gets rid of that rigid look you were mentionning.

HaloAnimator: Thanks man, the spikes right now are metal...for some reason I'm tempted to leave it metal...we'll see :) I'm not sure if putting red eyes on the dog would be distracting, because the oolox is the main point of interest and it would drag the attention away from him, good thought tho  I heard more about gears of war than actually seeing it, haven't played any games in a looong time.

Nick Unden: Hey teacher hehe, long time no see, yeah I'm back to france right now...clock is ticking till i forget all my english..

MASTERSHOKHAN: hey, glad to share my work with you guys. here are my texture sizes in pixels, I would suggest to keep your maps square...wondering if it's a big deal or not though.

Nice pose, and i like the whole composition you've got there. If i would suggest one thing it'd be the texture. I think, you could add more color variations to your diffuse texture. Since it just appears like one shade of color to me blending together. Also, maybe try blending the zbrush detail a little bit better as well, it seems like one pattern of bump detail starts too abruptly after another. Basically those critiques are just my two cents, just a matter of style preference of choice.

XsifoX: Thanks man, I'm at the state where I got rid of the snow on him right now...unless I make it look right I just won't have it.

Jinian: Glad you like the composition! I added more contrast to my texture, hopefully that will be enough to add more colors. I know what you mean about blending the different bumps better, gets hectic at time but I'm on it :wip:

XSI users: Does any of you guys ever tweak the "bsp settings" in the render options under Optimization? If set right, it's suposs to decrease drastically render time...the settings are scene specific but just wondering if you guys had good results or even ever looked at it. Thanks

NeptuneImaging
10-31-2005, 05:15 PM
I usually tweak BSP scenes on environment scenes (it is time consuming for me too)....and the times are really sweet. It cuts a third off my render time... there was a trick in lightwave where I use a flat 1x1 polygon to fake a scanline renderer.

But when using GI, I leave it alone...

theres a utility on xsi net which will render out your image with various bsp settings and record the render times. theres no other way to determine the best settings than trial and error i believe. if anyone knows another way... well tell us. btw your scene is great i feel alot of weight in your character both through the pose and the modelling. as for the bumps i dunno it looks like all your bumps arent even on there yet when i compare textureing updates to this.

You can see your render times by turning on the verbose options in the rendering options...

Looks for the syntax

Wallclock or something like that in the script editor

hes not talking about displaying how long the scene takes to render, hes talking about what sort of bsp settings would achieve an optimal render time, its true you have to test different settings and see which ones will work best, thats the only way i know unless theres an "auto compute"? but even then auto compute is more like a starting point for me.

HaloAnimator, formoso, Heber: thanks for the bsp talk, I'm running some tests and will let you guys know what settings worked for me. It better cut my render time in half or else

graffb, rblitz7, alexfalchi: Thanks a lot guys :)

Well, I use the weight of the overall color multiplier (Plug your texture into this) to .45. For the front scattering, set the weight to .55 (Plug your texture into this.), change the radius to 8. Set the depth to 8. For Back Scattering, use the colour of red, set weight to about 8. set the radius/depth to 35. Feel free to post a render.

My only crit would be, the dog's face looks quite tense to be dead. I think if the tongue was hanging a little more out of it's mouth, it'd help.

^__^ cool dood. I think ur going the right way, but seeing it as it is in winter, i think it could be better if u worked a bit on the texture of the big guy, since i dont think it should be as brown as it is. I didn't even notice the fur! haha...

usually these fur renderer's have a different contrast or lighting from the rest of the scene, and you notice them right away.

This fur blends in so nicely you don't even realize it's a different style of texture.

love the image but for some reason this guy doesn't fit in it. If he was from such an area wouldn't he be furry? or at least wouldn't he wear something warmer? He's very scaly, which gives him a reptilian, cold-blooded feel so I don't think such a cold climate would be the best place for him but that's just my 2 cents, lol. You have amazing talent.

The new Bg is really better; I wasn't found of your sun colors. My only staying crit would be about smoke at foot which doesn't seems natural.

I like the second image better, excellent breakdown.

did you model the wolf in the standard pose, rig it and then pose him in the dead position, like you did with the main creature?

The second background is much better. Oh and the snow at the feet(smoke) was that to add a more dynamic feel to the piece?

If so I think the woolf draging on the ground could have used more of that.

In the end its a great piece of work. You spent a lot of time on it.

excellent work man, I love the model my only crit would be in the compositing of the final image. You see a black rim around the entire, maybe more light would help with that.
