View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Brutal Monk
BrutalMonk 09-25-2005, 03:32 PM Hey Guys! Finally I get inspired to learn anatomy. The hand is quite strange thing, so i start with it! So! I post some pictures of my old drawings to demonstrate if Im developed or not. Please give me ideas, and crits!
So the old one (2002):
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y4/davidovics/doodlings/handoldone1.jpg
In this picture the mistakes can be seen clearly. On the first, the forefinger is much more longer then the others. The second one is the best i think, but the last one is a bit deformed.
Yesterday night sketch:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y4/davidovics/doodlings/hand2.jpg
The fingers looks ok, but the thumb is large i think, This one is a bit deformed too, i dont know the really reason.
And the this morning study, its looks ok for me, pleas correct me if you can!

Brutal Monk,
Hey there, it is nice to see your work! I like your last study especially ~ have you ever seen the work of Nicolai Fechin (http://www.fechin.com/media/fechin1.jpg)?
I think the key is to do as many drawings as you can...make time to do all sorts of studies. It's the only way to get better ~ and I think having your own thread is a great way to keep track of your own progress. :)
I just posted this message on the Hand Studies thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=258084&highlight=hand), but I'll post it here as well just in case:
We have a Hand Studies thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=258084&highlight=hand) ~ however, I don't mind if people create their own personal work threads. :)
I can move your studies to that thread...but, it's fine to create your own personal thread to which you add work over time. Either is fine with me. :)
You are free to keep your own thread of your own work, and not just for hand studies ~ so, you may wish to rename your thread something like: Anatomy Thread of Brutal Monk. It's up to you. :)
If you prefer, I can get your hand studies moved here, but it's not required.
Cheers, :)

I also recommend drawing not just your own hand, but from anatomy plates of hands...do you have an anatomy book? There are lots of resources online from which you can literally draw:

See this thread for Anatomy Book recommendations:

Looking forward to seeing you progres in your studies! :)
Cheers, :)

Wow, Thanx for the reply Rebecca!
Well I prefer to have an own thread because of the many pictures i will (i hope i will) post.
And after the study, I will post the best works to the Hand Studies thread (http://showthread.php?t=258084&highlight=hand). (And of course you can chose them :D)
Well i dont have any kind of anatomy books like the ones you posted, you know I am 16 and i cant order books from the net, and i am short of many... etc. And the hungarian bookshops are very poor in here... BUT! Ive just realised there is a library... lol i will visit it.
I have some hand tutorials on the net:
This one (http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/hands/hands.htm) and this one. (http://saveloomis.org/headhands/135.htm)
I hope i will find some more free anatomy things on the net.
Anywas, thanx for the picture U posted!
I hope i can post a new drawing soon!

Dave,
No problem! I am thrilled you've already found your own web resources ~ we are lucky these days to have so much online reference available, so thanks for those links! Would you mind posting those 2 links in the Reference for Anatomical and Figurative Art (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=257570&highlight=reference) with a little explanation of what they are about? Just a few words would be fine. :)
I just posted this (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2678068&postcount=24) in the Announcements (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=258100&page=1&pp=15) thread, as I think others might want to have personal threads, too ~ which I think is fine, so long as work is continually posted to them over time. :) It will be fun to watch your progress, and it looks as though you have made a lot already! :)
Cheers, :)

Thanx Rebecca!
Heres a picture i made yesterday night and today... its not finished yet, cuz i was out of the paper.. lol... it was too big for 1 sheet of paper. I used the reference pisture u posted before, its nice! I hope its correc if not, please correct me.
I would like to finish this one and after make an other one, which i hope will be easier and better.
Well and i would like to learn all the bones in the hand in order the i will be able to draw a hand without reference and etc. That would be so cool :)

Dave,
No problem! This is looking great! I think the key here is to do as many studies as you can. It's not to say, 'don't worry about accuracy', but just try to do your best on each study, and as you do these, they will become easier, and more accurate.
One thing I would suggest if you are going to do ink studies is to do a pencil drawing first...then ink it (so you don't run out of paper, lol) ;) ~ this also reinforces the exercise since you are basically drawing the same thing twice. The initial pencil drawing needn't be fancy, just something to establish the basic proportions before using a permanent media like ink for the details.
Good luck ~ keep going! :)
Cheers, :)

Hehehe :) I had to laugh a bit
This is not an ink work but a pencil. LoL :D I use photoshop. She's my love
SO i was cheater ... :)
But anyway great idea to make a sketch before the rendering, lol i started the hand as a little one, but i made it bigger and bigger, and changed the smaller ones. Khehe so the picture growed out of the paper.
Heres the really picture without cheating:

Dave,
Lol, you fooled me! Well, since you are in PS, technically, you can never 'outgrow' the paper :D ~ just increase the canvas (not image) size, and voila! More paper! :)
Cheers, :)

A little update, i finished the first (!) 3 fingers. Well I had no much time for this but... :)
Hope you enjoy.
Ohh... isnt the fingers are too long?

Dave,
Through the magic of PS, you can shorten fingers you feel to be too long. ;) The key is to make these judgements for yourself ~ even if, looking back, they are 'wrong'. It is not every little detail of a single image which counts, but the amount of mileage, or practice, you put in. :)
Let's see maybe 3 drawings of a skeletal hand...that would be terrific! :)
Cheers, :)

Heey! Rebecca, thanx, such wise words. I decied not to change the things, maybe next time it would be more correct!
Ive just finished the 1st Hand Skelektion! I hope you like it! Its waiting for the final rendering, but i wanted to share with you. I will earse the bugs and use a "normal" pencil to define the contrast etc. LOL i used a TESCO 5B pencil which is such usefull like my more valuable HB pencil... :D:D
Any idea is welcomed!

Dave,
I'm quite impressed! This is coming along really well, and the main thing I would say at this point would be just to clean the edges up a bit, and remove some of the inevitable smudging that occurs when doing a digital or traditional painting. :)
Great stuff, and looking forward to seeing more of your pieces!
Cheers,

Heey! Ive just finished the Hand skelektion #1
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y4/davidovics/doodlings/kezcsontvaz_final.jpg
I added the final rendering (cleared edges, added more deep and shadow)
Scenned in and retused.
Corrected the length of the little finger.
I hope you enjoyed the wip. I get to start work on the Hand skelektion #2, but i am quite sick... i have to rest all day, so i dont really have time and energy to drow, sorry, just a few day resting i hope ;)
