is it possible to animate a material so that it fades out (maybe set a keyframe for it?)

Yes. If you right click the property, such as color, in the material attribute editor you can set a key.

well, I already tried this:
I have a box and then go to frame 1 and set the material's opacity to 0% and then I set a keyframe.
Then I go to frame 24 and go and set the opacity to 100%. but when I try that then it doesn't work :(
