View Full Version : Mesh Smooth in MAYA

How can I achieve the same effect as 3D Max's Mesh Smooth in Maya using Polys?
For example...

You see the hard lines and egdes around the curves? I want those smoothed out. If I smooth only those faces, then I get weird geometry everywhere else. Also, the NORMALS SOFTEN/HARDEN option doesn't do much to make it smooth either.
Any suggestions?

The trick lies in the normals.
First "Set Normals To Face" over the entire object, then "Average Normals".

Then shade that truck up and call him optimus...

Meshsmooth in Maya is just called Smooth.
Select the object and go to Polygons > Smooth
in maya 4.x there is a plug called CPS wich does essentially what meshsmooth does.
i didnt like that so i used a way of converting the polys to subD and back again (using level 0 verts) this worked really well (as long as i didnt have to render with MR)
in maya 4.5 it comes with approximation which is basically a CPS tool implemented by A|W.. it works the same way meshsmooth does.
i tried using my old method of converting to subD and back, but in maya 4.5 this doesnt work too well and it leaves me multiple meshes ect which i havent found out yet wth is wrong with it :thumbsdow
