View Full Version : The Return of the Atari 2600

"
The Atari brand has traded hands in the years since Pong hit the scene, but the new owners are still milking some mileage out of this game and 39 others with Atari Flashback 2. This $30 device offers a fun and affordable glimpse into the gaming's past — one that, for better and worse, looks nothing like the present.
The console itself looks like a scaled-down version of an old Atari 2600, with faux wood paneling and other dated details. There are no cartridges to plug in, as technology advances have made it easy to stuff all of the games onto a small chip inside. And the controllers are exactly like the Atari 2600 joysticks of yore. Meh...
I think it would have more chance at commercial succes if, for example, they took the original 2600 and build in the PS2 hardware + a '2600' stylized dualshock controller.
Good id for console casing modders

I know I have my original 2600 somewhere around here - I even hooked it up a few years ago for a while.
I actualy rather play those games on my PC or a PSP than on this retro gaming "console".

have seen some of these where it's literally just the atari joystick, it's all in there. but there are all kinds of these things now, see them while in line at best buy and fry's..even sega genesis, also shaped like a wee console and w/altered beast and whatnot built in. lots of old school arcade stuff too like ms. pacman..think I even saw a joust one. pretty nifty stuff.
p.s. I too have an original 2600 but it's languishing in storage, no matter how nostalgic I get I haven't had the urge to be chased through the dungeon again by that "freakin' duck" :D

this page shows what I think is the same one, but maybe not..different games list..it has a better pic tho, and also seems to have a bunch of the other similar doohickeys, including a mini atari 7800.

Those atari controllers remind me of how much carpal tunnel they caused me before it had a name.

I've seen the aforementioned system for sale at Target as well. I believe it was either 30 or 40 dollars and has some two dozen games or so on it. I'm surprised to see a working unit out there. I tried to ressurect mine but I think the rigors of the environment (dust, moisture, air, etc.) got the better of it and it would not power on. It was sad to throw that stuff away.

i like how the author says "seriously, how scary can a little green blinking square be?" and it got me thinking. Some of the magic i remember playing with on those old games was imagining what was really up.. like missile command.. i used to get into it and imagine it all photorealisticly in my mind.. it was fun.. Graphics are so advanced theres not much need to do that anymore.. I guess its like comparing reading a book to seeing a film.

Figured for those Amazonian shoppers here in Canada, they are selling this unit on there as well under pre-order.
