Well I really want to join one of the societies in university for one of the two sports, but I am not sure which one to choose, american football sure looks cool, but rugby I played as a child and love it. What do you prefer?

Rugby is awesome. I've played both. I like North American style football but Rugby is all out all the time with no pads. Way cooler. There is more flow to the game as well, not many stops in play.

Funny thread since I am working on the 2006 Rugby title for EA right now.

yeah, they might not use pads in rugby, but i think it's worth taking into consideration how big some football players are. if they didn't use pads, normal sized guys like quarterbacks or wide recievers would probably have severe internal injurys the first time a 350 pound dude tackled them.

Ya, different game to be sure. You don't generally wait around to get hit in Rugby like a quarterback sometimes will do (not by choice obviously). It's the nature of the game and waiting for the selected play to develop.

There are still some pretty big guys in Rugby. The 350 guys in football are generally the O-line and they do some blocking but don't hit much.

You are forgetting about the Nose Tackles or D Lines.. look at Shaun Rodgers of Detroit 320 and has enough closing speed he can catch QB and RB that are trying to move side to side. Ther are quite a few of them that are big.. and I have seen some bigger guys play rugby as well which was fun to watch because they were not in shape for that..

Your original question should have read 'Shorts or a leotard?'

An answer will then have become crystal clear... :D

I didn't realise there were D line over 300lbs...not many anyway. They are usually in the high 200s.

Ahhh...steroids where would pro athletes be without them.

Rugby seems like drunk man's soccer. I'm sure it's a great game, but I've never watched enough of it to know what's going on. My impression is that it's mainly an Australian sport?

I love football. It's like war. You have your tanks - the offensive line/defensive lines, your missles - the recievers/defensive backs, your f16's - running backs/linebackers, your all purpose weapons - tight ends/safeties, and your generals - the qb's and defensive captains.

My saturdays are completely lost to college fooball.

Are you sure you're talking about rugby? :curious: It has absolutely no similarity to soccer other that it is played on a field...

Anyway, I think I must be the only South African alive that is not a rugby fan. Then again, I don't like American Football either.

So I don't really have any comment.

I was just thinking about lomu today, comparing him with Rokocoko. Although Rokocoko is pretty awesome, Lomu in his prime would just plough through defenses, great to watch. Too bad about his kidney condition.

As for american football, although it is very strategic, it takes forever to play a full game, with time outs and commercials etc. it can take 3 hours or so. After tivo-ing games, actual game play is about 40mins! Rugby on the other hand is constant play with far fewer commercial interuptions.

I actually prefer rugby 7's which is much faster pace then 15 a side. Lots more running and try scoring. Hoping to catch the HK 7's next year.

There wasn't enough blood in that video. Most matches I've seen result in players sporting sodden bandages and slowly leaking crimson all over the place. I used to go to school with a guy on the England Under 18's squad. He was like some kind of crazy man-mountain, and despite the intimidating skinhead-thug-look, a proper nice bloke.

Of course, a guy as big as he was, who could quite easily block out all the sunlight...you weren't likely to really try and call him anything else if you had two brain cells to rub together. :D

I've played both, and I have to say I totally prefer American Football. More tactics, and although there is padding, I found there to be less rules on how you hit! :D

Rugby to me, always feels a little disorganised too... Could be coz I suck at it...

I think you're confusing rugby with Australian Rules Football.

I wouldn't say that U.S. football has more tactics. Just different tactics. There is a lot of strategy in rugby, but you have keep coming up with the plays, and improvise, on the fly since there are no stops after every tackle. (talking Rugby Union here, and not Rugby League; there's a whole different debate right there). And It takes a good team to do that well.

I played football in high school, and Rugby in college. Played 2nd row. At 6'1" and 180lbs I was the second smallest player on the team.

Hmmm. This one should be fun.
Coming from a Central American country, football(or soccer for those of you in the US) is a religion. Great game to play but a little boring to watch IMHO.
Now Gridion(American Football) is fun to watch due to tactics involved. I mean, damn, you really gotta be a pretty sharp chap in order to counter your tactics and such. But once again, great to play, not so great to watch. Takes too long.

On to the rugby which I think needs to be made clear that there are two codes or Rugby. There is Rugby Union which is the one played the most on an international level. Australia has the Wallabies, Argentina the Pumas, SA the Sprinbocks and the poms have Johnny Wilkinson. Great fun to watch when there are two good teams playing. A bit more strategy required for this one but I think it becomes a little like footbal where the main way of scoring a try is territory gain.
Then there is my favourite, Rugby League. This one is a newer version of Rugby where the way to go about is ball possesion. Both of rugby have guys that go out there and slam agains each other like there was not tomorrow. But if you want to see some solid hits and real sportmanship, see the State of Origin, New South Wales vs Queensland. I've seen guys have their foreheads stapled in the field... and the stapler failing and hence dangling off the guy. Bloody awesome game!

Hope this helps.

Go the Sea Eagles!!

FYI thats Rugby League rather than Rugby Union. league was derived from union originally in order to speed up the game by having less stoppages and less players and can be interesting to watch (esp. state of origin as mentioned above)

however being from new zealand i would have to say Rugby Union wins hands down

Football is just a dismissal attempt at trying to rip-off a game instead of playing one because it was from Britain like *cough* Baseball wannabe Cricket *cough*

Rugby is easily a more well developed game, has more depth and is far less linear. The amount of skill and tactics required is also much higher because things change based on seconds, not by plays. In Football everything is quite predictable, ball goes back, quarter-back throws based off a play the coach has taught them, if that isn't on, throw it wildly at an unmarked player, or he runs forward. When they are on their last down, they kick. Tackles are merely stopping an opponent as quick as possible. Yawn.

Where as in rugby, everyone during the game handles the ball at least 5 times, tactics are on-going, tackles are hardly ever based on impact but turning the opponent around/driving them backwards/stripping the ball/or pushing the player to the side-line. Kicking is an integral part of the game, players have to be multi-talented as you are not split up into defensive/offensive teams, plays are not reset to the center of the field, and in general is a more team-orientated game.

Rugby growth in North America is very high, so if you haven't watched it already, you will do...

Without a doubt rugby! The sport is just exciting and fast paced, it's agressive but it's a sport where you can walk out and go to the pub with the loosing fans and all get drunk together. And Jauhar2k4 if you get a chance watch the 6 nations starting in Feburary, the best tournament around, should come to Wales to watch one of the matches, it's a great experience, especially because we're going to win it again

Ive played both, and whilst i do enjoy american football when i get on the field, i got so damn bored waiting on the sidelines for the other team to get the damn ball.

Whilst at rugby whilst i wasn't that great in my opinion my coach at tynedale thought i was great, probably cause i was the biggest player by about 4 stone, we didnt lose many scrums i was in. which was pretty damn good.

The only problem with rugby is the fact that so many rugby players are arrogant dicks who i'd rather not socialise with. But i think thats just opinion ;)

it wasnt just the all blacks who beat us, it was some of the local club teams who were warm up games. It was embarrasing.

Rugby all the time, always rugby.

Just one question to know if you'd rather play football or rugby:

Imagine you are a big guy, not too fast, and quite strong (the average rugby-player, maybe a front football row-guy)

What do you prefer:
a) Training 3 hours a day 5 days a week, knowing you are going to play just some minutes of a 3-hour match, not being able to touch the ball a single time, and not being able to score never (except something magical happens)?

b) Training 3 hours a day 5 days a week, knowing you are going to play 80 complete minutes of a 80 minutes match (unless the trainer changes you, of course), being allowed to touch the ball every time you are close to it, and having the opportunity to score?

Well, if you chose a) go for football, if you go for b) go for rugby. A front row footballer will never be a MVP in any game. A prop (pilier in french/spanish) really has the chance about it (Davis Sole anyone?). Both are about the same size, weight, etc... (well, the rugby player probably will be more handsome :) )
