View Full Version : Cyan Worlds (creators of the Myst series) Re-Opens their doors
RockinAkin 09-23-2005, 06:51 PM Earlier this month, Cyan Worlds (makers of the best-selling Myst computer game series) announced that they would be shutting their doors and had to let go of its employees.
Today, news spread when Cyan employee Ryan Warzecha updated his blog (http://www.thegreydragon.com/2005/09/return-of-king-i-really-cant-say-much.html) with the news fans of the series has been hoping for: He's been rehired along with at least some of the former staff and Cyan is on its feet again.
I really can’t say much about it, but Cyan Worlds is back. I can’t say for how long, but I can say we are back. We all moved into the cool building this last week. I’m glad to be back. It feels good.
No word yet on what their situation is, or their future plans, but good news to hear none the less.
Their last title Myst V: End of Ages (http://store.ubi.com/item.jsp?item=68252) arrived in stores just this tuesday and is said to be selling well.
(do yourselves a favor and check it out!)

I wish them luck. It was sad to hear about the closing the first time, I hope they can keep it going a while longer.

I make an exception on my own rule here and hereby state that I am not happy they are back as long as they don't make a decent game. After all, they made Myst, Riven, which were amazing, the later even today. Then they made Revelation which had a lot of technical power but the story of a .. a.. common cold. And this Myst V... well, every character I spend on it feels dirty.
So, I hope they get back to their old games, no matter how elitist and old-fashioned that statement may sound.

Heck yeah! :buttrock:
I'm going to have to pick up Myst V over Thanksgiving break. I would be a very bad idea to do so now. :)

I hate to say this but something isn't quite right in Denmark. A company folding for financial reasons just before the debut of a game sounds an awful lot like financial shenanigans if you ask me - like someone was hedging bets against the sales of game with the futures of employees. It happens in the outside financial world often enough - layoffs preceeding large product rollouts to maximize profits and minimize expense before the end of a fiscal year. Employee benefits, insurance, all kinds of misc expenses get wiped from the books so someone somewhere is guaranteed a safe landing whether or not the product launch is successful.
Hate to sound cynical but this happens way too often out there - especially since they have created an enduring mythos and game art along the way.

Myst III was made by Presto Studios, and Myst IV was made by one of Ubisoft's in-house development teams. Cyan was working on realMyst and URU during that time.
