View Full Version : Run little hand...RUN!
ivanisavich 09-23-2005, 09:12 AM Howdy!
This is my latest. A potential client here at work wanted to know if we could "animate a hand"...so....given that much, here's what I came up with :)
Everything is mine except for the model...that's a 3d scan.
I did the texturing/rigging on Tuesday....did the animation yesterday and the compositing today. The project would have taken considerably less time had a power failure not shorted out my computer yesterday  ....luckily we were able to get my computer back up and running today so I was able to finish this thing :D
Post your comments!!!

Darn it....does anyone know why the Quicktime Sorenson 3 codec decreases the contrast of the image so much?? I tried turning the compression quality (up to the point where the file-size was 18mb!)...yet still no improvement :P
Not a big deal....but it bugs me....
hi tyson,
Man u rock!! just gr8 work from u.it looks so real.
waiting for more animation of this hand.

Haha, I don't see why he's scared.. I think anybody would be freaked out by a disembodied hand moving that fast... almost as fast as you can pump this stuff out :D. Come to think of it, that's probably what your hand looks like when working, hehe - perfect reference!
Great stuff as always :)
hey, man you can really pump the shots out :applause: looks good, the one thing that buged me personaly is the fingers bind backward really far, and streach unrealisticly. at least my fingers can't bind like that any way :) but the animation looks sweet, the shacking and twitchs really give it life.
off topic here but I was just wondering now that you've been at MAKE for a little while now, Are you likeing it there seems like you get some fun animations to work on and develope. any way I hope you do like it there.
(man oh man I need to get my reel sent out :) )

Hey thanks guys! :)
Hey zoox: I agree :)....boss came in this morning and said I should probably tone down the extreme bending and such (since a real hand is much more limited in motion as you stated)....so I'll be doing that.
As for MAKE....yeah! I'm totally diggin it here! Having a great time and it's nice to get paid for work I'd be doing anyways in my spare time hehe
As for what's chasing him....I'm thinking of adding something in if I have a chance today...will post the update if I get it finished ;)

I like it ivanisevich.
It has style, dynamics and acting.
Very good job.

Amazing as usual, man.. Only crit is that the cartoony feel on a realistic hand feels slight odd. But, the details in your animations.. and so little time you spend to finish them, it's just.. unparallel. By the way, do you play piano at all?
Again, thanks for sharing!

Hi Tyson,
Great stuff as usual. My crits would be that the hand might be moving a touch too fast when it enters frame and jumps onto the yellow pages.
Also, I don't like how it changes direction in mid-air on it's first jump after hiding.
You hit some great poses and I love the trembling and finger shuffling. I also love how you have it leaning into the turn when it rounds the desk.
Super job.

Hey Shakii....no, I don't play piano...used to take lessons though as a kid...and HATED it! lol ;)
Hey Art! Thanks for droppin by man :). Although I think the speed of the hand as it enters frame is good....I definitely agree with you on the angle-shift in mid-air (and have fixed that...you'll see once I post the update :))...good eye!
Speaking of which....update should be soon! I've added a second "chaser" hand in now....just gotta tweak the animation and I'll be set to post it :D

Hi Tyson,
Yeah, the more I look at it the more I like the speed. It could just be the landing that is throwing me off.
It kind of twists/rotates and extends the fingers all in mid-air again. Or it appears to. There doesn't seem to be an absorbtion of energy from the impact. It just pops into an extreme pose. That may be what is making it look too fast for me. It all happens it like 2 frames.
Maybe if it didn't start rotating on the way down and shifted it's weight on the impact, rather than during, it would read better to my eye.
Of course, maybe it's my eye that is messed up to begin with. ;)

I think the animation is great, but the rigging is kinda square -i know it is hard- the fingers look like rectangles at some points, other than that GREAT MOVEMENT !!!

Looks awesome! The hand was moving a bit to fast, but I read you'll be working on that...
It's worth a  ! I think it really kicks ass :)

for a test animation it looks great! as always...
for a final product, the fingers feel a bit too "rubbery"...
which im sure is no problem to fix...
good luck on the client!
hope it all works out...

Wow, great stuff, how did you rig the fingers? were they all ik?
any chance of seeing the rig of the hand?
ivanisavich
09-25-2005, 07:58 AM
Hey...yes all of the fingers are rigged with IK ;)
Updated the animation just so you know.....toned down the hair on the hands (they were looking a little too hobbit-like), fixed up some of the animation on hand #1 (thanks for the critiques) and added in the chaser hand. Hope you enjoy! (btw....just download the same link at the top again for the updated anim)

Woops....sorry forgot to change the anim link :P....if you downloaded it in the last 5 minutes (which I don't think anyone has)....re-download because otherwise you've still got the old version ;)

I loathe you...
You're giving alot of people a really bad name... You make this 3D stuff look way too easy.

Thanks again to all those who've dropped by and commented :)
As for length of time studying...it's been about 5 years now :)

Nice update! If I was you I would delay the second hand jumping just a couple of frames, so that the first is clear of frame before/as it leaps, there's a little too much going on at once at that point...

I agree mattmos...I've been thinking that myself upon my constant reviews of the piece :P
