Hellos,

This was my graduation project. It´s a “semi-abstract character animation focused short film”. The idea came from music Xique-Xique by brazilian musician Tom Zé (http://www.tomze.com.br) (used with permission), where in the lyrics, 3 minute later in the music, he sings “eu vi o dia e a noite se encontra”, or in english “i saw day and night meet”. I´ve tried to characterize the day and night into human forms and to animate their encounter, in a somewhat sunset setting. I call it semi-abstract because the character intentions are not clear, their conflict is not completely readable. As is the intention between the eternal night day cycle in our real world.

Originally I was loosely inspired by Le Merle, and other films, from Norman McLaren and Oskar Fischinger. As you can see by the WIP thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=238943), the animation originally was much more tied to the music. I scraped that idea because from a story point of view it would get too complex to have the characters follow the music while telling a not fully abstract story.

A huge thanks to Marco Capparelli (xmarek), Stewart Jones (vyntax), Ryan Hagen (remi), Kiel Figgins (kielfiggins), on the animation forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=259833) and icq. Their tips were essential to get lot´s of movements right.

There are four options to download: (1min45sec lenght)

full divx format - 11mb (http://www.eduardosimioni.com/videos/daynightfull.avi)
full quicktime - 12mb (http://www.eduardosimioni.com/videos/daynightfull.mov) (recommended)
small divx format - 3mb (http://www.eduardosimioni.com/videos/daynightsmall.avi)
small quicktime - 3mb (http://www.eduardosimioni.com/videos/daynightsmall.mov)

Although I already pulled the plug on this project, I would gladly hear comments and critiques, be on the animation or filmaking wise.

BTW, I did everything from storyboard to rendering, except the ik/fk rig from Brad Noble (http://www.bradnoble.net/rigging/index.html).

I think this was great cartoon animation because I am about to start learning character animation.

Characters could use a little more pop. A little more anticipation would be good. They're too fluid in their movements. Animation is good otherwise. I like the concept.
