Just reserving myself a spot in my first challenge!

I'm in my final week of uni at the moment, but as soon as I get out of this God forsaken place I'll start!

I'm thinking of doing myself as an anime style character, but cartoony, Lupin style perhaps. I just did a quick search of the web, and found this example. Oh, and that's me in my avatar.

I'm trying to do a short film at the moment, where the lead character is a pilot of an ww2 spitfire... maybe I can kill two birds with one stone here and make myself the pilot... only problem is piloting isn't one of my greatest hobbies.
imagining things is though, so is my being in an imaginary pilot stretching the guidelines too far?

Ok, we officially finish uni tomorrow, but I had some spare time while I printed, so I did a preliminary profile of my head in lightwave.

Ok, here's a little update. I've only had a chance to tweak it a little bit (with some help from my girlfriend) to make it look a bit more cartoony.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, here are some updates. I really have no idea what technique I am using here, but it seems to be working so I'll stick with it

I really need help here, especially on his hair, nose, mouth... EVERYTHING!!!

i think smooth shifting a poly or two under the nose and playing with those a bit will give you the definition under there that you want (for something like the lupin drawing), the overall shape is ok with a bit of tweaking. i like the cel shaded look, very cool. as far as the mouth and hair, i think they're getting there, just keep playing a bit. good stuff so far

Here I've tweaked the eyes and hair, and I've been doing alot of experimenting with specular highlights, edges and celshading. I seem to be steering away from the more cartoony style to a more serious one. Tell me what you think.

the eyes added alot. And the celshading is really nice! You're definitely going in the right direction. Cool hair btw.

Right, still plodding away! Making his jacket now, and discovering the wonder that is bump displacement!

i had trouble seeing your images at first also. very cool! and the toon rendering of the fluff at the top of the jacket looks extra sweet.

Thanks guys, the complements are appreciated! Makes me want to keep going!
The fluff at on the collar are just the subpatches you can see in the wireframe picture there, with an FMB bump map applied to it, then I turned on the "bump displacement" feature in item properties. I think I've stumbled across a nice way to add "detail" to clothing! The best bit is that the bump map can change over time by adjusting the envelope for it's position/size etc, so I can imagine being able to make it look like the clothing is being blown in the wind and whatnot.
Right, the countdown begins, not long to go now! Anyway here's an update! I've changed the colours, what's your opinion? Not that it matters I suppose seeing as how it's a modelling challenge
Proportion needs work I know.
Next: giving him boots

Excellent! The deadline's been pushed back, so I hope I can finish him how I want him! I'm adding all his pilot type gear now, straps, buckles, and his mae west (life jacket) is to come. I've left space between his jacket and the straps to fit it in.
I don't know whether or not to have the lines running along the straps, I'd like to know what everyone thinks.
I really want to look at the eyes again, but that's low on my list of priorities at the moment!
Any comments/suggestions welcome!!

Excellent, those toony wrinkles in the clothing are awesome, and those boots are great.

Thanks for the compliments, Dirk.
I'm finding that adding bumpmaps to celshaded surfaces makes them look alot more alive. Here he is with his life-jacket, which incidently isn't a Mae West after all

I can't believe I missed the deadline. It wasn't my fault, I was at work when entries closed!!! Anyway here was the last update before the server rollback.

I'm still really dissapointed I missed the deadline :( Anyway here's something I couldn't do in the challenge... make him strut! This was just a basic deformation test. I think it's going ok so far. As usual critisism is most welcome!

PS: I posted this link the the WIP section too, I don't know if that's against any forum rules.

wow! nice look...

just one little comment; the hands...it looks like you want to shoot somebody with your fingers...you could probably use a handgun for that ;)

haha, I've actually given him a little handgun now, thanks for the comment :D Oh, I've only modelled it, it's not in the animation :P
