View Full Version : Black Refractions with Use Background???

Hello all,

This is my first post and would like some explanation or a resolution to a problem I'm having. I have done numerous searches on this matter and still no luck.

Scene:

For ease of explanation and testing, I have a basic scene with a plane and sphere rendering with MentalRay in Maya 7.0. The perspective camera environment is set to "white", the plane has a "use background" shader applied and the sphere is using "Lobber's MR" glass shader with the color blue. I have tried using the "dielectric_material" but I get the same problem. I am using only FG for the lighting and occlusion.

Problem:

I've tried everything from global/local settings of the reflection or refraction rays, depth, different colors, gain offsets for various things, etc. The glass material still refracts black on the upper portion of the sphere, hence the plane. I don't want to lose the "all white" scene matte/shadow ability for compositing reasons.

Thanks
