Hi all,

Here is a collection of my work from the past 5 months at VFS. I will be graduating at the end of October and will be looking forward to work as a modeler, texturer and/or rigger.

The movie file is 29mb Quicktime, and can be found:

Demo Reel (http://www.3dadam.com/media/full/AdamScott_DemoReel.mov)

Wow!:applause:
What can I say Dude...
I have been sitting beside you the last few terms and have learned so much from watching you work. Your models and textures are simply amazing. You are a very talented kid and you've had a big effect on my reel. Thanks man!
I think my favorite character is the Robot but that’s not to say the rest aren’t amazing.

Best of luck in your future and hopefully we can work together someday.

Cheers

Hey Adam,

Man, even after seeing your reel this many time, I'm still amazed at the quality and the proficiency of you work  Your work ethic and the quality of art that you produce has been an inspiration for me.

It's been a crazy year eh? It doesn't seem to long ago that we were working on that bike and animating slippy.. lol.. and now we're down to the final few weeks.. *sigh*

Thanks for all the help you've given me with my work this past year, you've been a great friend :) I'm sure where ever you go you'll continue to amaze!

Best of Luck in the Future man,

Dominic

ADAM!!

now that all of this came to a closure I don't know what to say..
What you've achieved a month before school is actualy over is awe inspiring- I've learned a lot from you.
my favorite is the beast for sure- it's alive and it's amazing..
but the whole damn thing is front page material!

good luck dude..

Wow, what can i say? Those are some incredible works, specially the first one. You have a very good eye for detail. The pose, the actitud of the rider, is superb. Not taking in count that you're... just 19?

Is great to see such a work from a young artist. Just one thing, can you told us your background education? I mean, i don't think that u've gain those skill at vfs this five months. Maybe i'm wrong...

Respects, really good work. You seem really talented. I don't think that you'll have problems finding a job. Good luck :)

Bye!

ps: i've just finished my animation studies in spain... and actually i find myself being years far behind you. really inspiring work... i must work harder... :buttrock:

adam, that was one of the most diverse reel that i have seen, you had great models textures and rigs. Its great since it makes you more valuable, good luck with the job hunt (I doubt youll really have any troubles) and congrats on finishing up a great reel. my only critiques is that maybe the model turntables could have been more intersting, then using the original cylinder for the rig tests and animation if you were worried that any props might get in the way of the camera. Other than that, this reel is going straight into my inspiration folder. Congrats man.

 On September 20th in the year 2000 and 5, I watched a glorious demo reel after which my life was never the same, nor indeed, was the world! It was a feeling like staring into the face of GOD himself and having him look upon me and say "You are my most wonderous creation."
Like wine flowing from a silvery starship, gravity all nonesense now, it was gorgeousnous and gorgeousity in one!

Good work......ya lil bastard!

J.Wilson - thanks buddy.. its been a good 3 terms working beside you. You really motivated me and I appreciate it. Keep in touch!

xtetra - thanks!

JonyK - thank you

2hands - You've done a lot for me Dan and I owe you one, thanks for everything you've done.

Cinimod - It's been a great year and I was happy spending 24hours a day with you. Can't wait to see where you'll be Dom, keep in touch and get some sleep.

ivanisavich - thanks, I appreciate it!

shraga - You have been a very good friend over past year shakira.. you've taught me many things that I should have known by general knowledge, and I thank you for that. Good luck with your new career.

d0up - wow thanks! Nice to hear you like it. For background information, I graduated highschool last year and went straight to VFS. I've been pretty much drawing all my life and first touched 3d when I came to VFS. The program is 12 months and they teach you all you need to know. Good luck with your espana studies!

agasco - thanks alvaro, always nice to have a spaniard by your side. I look forward to see what you'll be making in the future.. your concept work is outstanding and I can't image where your skills will be with it in the future.

pum - thanks herb, good to hear from you. I'll keep in touch for sure.

AndrewHwang - hey Andrew, thanks for the nice comments. I totally agree with the turntables being very bland. I may work on those until my schools over.. but we'll see. Good luck with your new reel!

Domo_Digital - haha thanks Adam.. can't wait to see your final, I know you'll land a job you've always wanted.

lildragon - thanks for the plug, I appreciate it!

krazeyhorse - thanks!

fellah - thank you for the comment fellah

That's one of the coolest demos I've ever seen, presentation wise. Animating the characters on the turntables is something I've wanted to do for a while now, but I never had the time to do it properly. Awesome work! I don't think you'll have to worry getting a job, just...which one do you want to take :)

i was sure it was headed there anyways congrats on finishing a great reel and all the best for you. Let us know where you end up.

**if theres anything for me to critique i think the reel is a bit overcompressed and you might be losing too much quality ..perhaps output a .wmv .

Great job adding the robot model! Everything is just top notch!! and I never knew you went straight to VFS after high school. Im a junior in hs and was thinking bout transfering from Santa Barbara City College to VFS but now I might reconsider. lol. But you must have worked real hard to get these results. You say you never did 3d till VFS but I thought you need a portfolio to get in..so im assuming you submitted a 2d portfolio?

Congrats on your reel and graduation Scott. I've been following up your posts and really wanted to see them all together. And here it is. Nice work. My only crit would be the skin texture of the guy riding beast. Its too simplistic. Maybe you wanted to concentrated on beast more than the rider. Same thing goes with the Fisherman's texture aswell...skin is too blended with less details...*correct me if i'm wrong here* :)
Loved your robot and his textures...bump details are amazing...

"ooh btw i loved it when you moved the pelvis of guy riding beast...it cracked me up...hehe"

Well deserved FP work mate...you will go far...cheers

I would cut out that animation test of the quadraped, it really brings down the quality of your reel. When I saw that I cringed. It's ok to show the rig testing, but if you are going to show animation of your rigs then you should be a good animator or have a good animator do it for you. I know that's not what you are going for, but it would be like a lighting and shading guy showing off a bad model, it just doesn't bode well overall. The editing could be cut up some, one lest rotation on the quadraped on the turntable before it goes into the close up shots. You are also loosing quite a bit of texture detail on your human textures, the rider and the fisherman lost a lot of detail in the render. They could also use a bit more work in the shading department.

Good luck with the job hunt.

Wow that is an awesome reel. Amazing job on the models, the textures, and WOW those rigs were spectacular. I have to say though, the animation of the beast should not have been included. You could have just used the rig tests to showcase your rigs rather than that walk cycle. IMO you should take it out. Other than that though, it was seriously awesome and very inspiring.

Great reel and a well deserved front page. I love the rider with the beast the most and you did a good job rigging all your characters, as well as animating them. You've shown an extensive range of skill in your reel, there is no doubt in my mind you will have trouble finding a job. Congrats.

- Just one question, the size is pretty low for a 3 minutes and a half reel, just wondering what audio and video compression did you use?

Thanks.

Quite well done, I agree with Mr Spralding above that some things could be improved upon (IE the robot model lacks some small details IMO), some of the shading could be improved not the textures, but shading) You are in VAN. yes ?, try EA they are looking and you would fit I beleive.

Great first reel though,

09-21-2005, 05:38 AM
ryanduncan - thanks for the optimism!

Heber - hey hebe, always nice to hear from you and thanks for the comments. I'll keep you posted once I know where I'm headed. I'll also work getting a higher quality reel.. I've got one at 57mb which is flawless but I'll aim for about 50mb.

rblitz7 - Yeah, I pretty much lived at VFS for the last half of the year to work on my reel. Made sure I got 7 hour sleep on average so I wouldn't die or anything. I sent in some drawings and sketches as a portfolio which seemed to be what they wanted. Thanks for the comments.

harshdesign.com - thank you. I agree with you on the riders skin.. it was very simplified and was a very quick texture job for him. The compressed render might not do the texture justice on the fisherman, I'll keep it in mind for my future projects.

danielkenobi - wow thanks!

BillSpradlin - Thanks for the crits, I appreciate it. I will consider cutting out the walk animation of the beast, especially if it made someone cringe at its very sight. Not sure about cutting out a rotation for beast model.. currently now its a half displacement/half wire rotation with a full texture rotation. I was bargaining whether to fully cut out the shaded rotation which I did, and any more cutting wouldn't fully show my work. I agree with you on the rider and fisherman skin textures losing their detail, it'll be something to improve on for my next models.

dioxide - I'm non religious, but thanks for the comment

remcv8 - thank you!

Rye - thanks for the feedback Rye

Jinian - good to hear from a vfs grad, and thanks for the friendly comments. I believe I exported from After Effects using Sorenson 3 at Medium, key every 30 frames, with Audio at 22105, 16bit, mono.

agreenster - thanks

dcmoutinho - thanks for the comment

Sherif.Nagib - I appreciate it Sherif, thanks for the motivation along the way.

Doobers - hey doob. Surprised someone remember my original concept.. that was so long ago. The original was actually to have the fisherman riding the beast. The beast would wade in some rapids and the man would fish off him. Thanks for the reply.

yolk - thank you

essencedesign - I agree with you on the crits, and thanks for the feedback. I've actually been looking to relocate to the states since it'll be easier fresh out of school, visa wise.. (or so I've heard).

ShadowM8 - thanks Serg, keep in touch will ya?

ty19345 - thanks for the starage!

Your demo looks awsome! It seems like most talented people congregate at VFS. I liked many previous VFS reels, and yours is no exception. Great modelling, texturing, rigging all around. I especially like your rig for that beast rider. That's some quality rigging.

The robot's modelling looks a bit lackluster though. Not because of how it was modeled, but the fact that it lacks fine modelling details casts big contrast with your beast rider. Other than that tidbit of critique, your demo rocks! :)

Fuggin eh, it's absolutly worthless even critting this, in another year or so (maybe even less) you'll have another reel from your work experience and this will look so bad to you, BOOYAH! I wore your hat at Shragga's party.

Great reel Adam!

Your models always have such insane details. As good as your texturing is, i actually prefer seeing them as grey shaded objects or wireframes! I can appreciate the modeling skill more.
Its nice seeing a pure modeling reel presented in an intresting way that doesent send the viewer to sleep!

Ps - why is the lowpoly samurai turnaround in such a hella camp pose? All he needs is a handbag!

Sceme
09-21-2005, 07:43 AM
Wow. Amazing how you textured the fisherman. I mean the dirt on his feets and all. That kind of detailing really pays it off. I love that stuff.

Adam, eh!

It's been a long way 'till now, since we met. And, today, I have one less good friend to care about getting a job. Still, I have now the same good friend that is a million years ahead of me, with the most amazing modeling demo reel I've seen so far, and without any doubt is not gonna have any tiny problem in finding a job in this massive, but small, industry!

Problem: Adam, you now have to make very importante decisions in your life, specialy at this very begining...To choose the place you wanna work for. Don't rush it, because you have all your brilliant life ahead of you! Sease it! Take over! Walk, proudly, on the path you've created with such hard work and talent!

SOLUTION: Nah, no worries, I'm sure you're up for it!:)

GO ADAM, GO!

You............................ROCK!

Great stuff!
2 Things;

-Take the walk animation of the beast out, it seriously hurt the quality. Or get someone that is good at animation to do it for you.
-The Rig scared the hell out of me (too much man!), it's a good technical achivement but as an animator I think that is really scary :)

Good luck with your job hunt, I'm sure you wont have any problems.

Hi Scotcho!

It's mustan9 here! :) I love your reel very nicely done.

It has been nothing but a joy to watch you work here on the CGTalk forums. Your very skilled and creative. I really hope this doesn't mean we won't see anymore WIP threads? :(

I think you have helped enriched this place with your work.

Please let us know what happens after school. Where you go to work, and what projects you get to work on. I have never seen someone work so fast and I know you'll have no problems finding work.

Personally, I am crossing my fingers for you hoping that you land a dream job doing work for films.

Good luck buddy! :bounce:

AVTPro - The overlapping actions is done by soft constraints in XSI.. mostly by constraining a percentage of the position to another object. Thanks, glad you like it.

Ryan3D - thank you zbrush man.

Smaw - thanks Smaw, I agree the Robots geometry is quite simple.

mooingCow - lol thanks Davy, I'll be looking forward to your reel.

Andy H - good to hear from you Andy, love your work and appreciate the feedback. I figured the constrasting pose for the samurai character would be more interesting.

Sceme - thanks!

formoso - haha thank you. Not too sure what you mean about the rig question.. a lot of what is shown was IK. Feel free to send me a more specific private message and I'll be happy to answer it.

rustbucket - thanks rustbucket, always nice to have your comments along the way.

shupersonic - hey Ben. It's been quite the experience.. you're always able to make me laugh. You have a very impressive real in the making and I have no doubt it'll be turning some heads. Remember me when you're out there, keep in touch!

Sergio Santos - thanks Sergio! My friend actually showed that model to me while I was working on my own. Very cool design though.

Alom - thank you

Fred Heys - hah thanks.. not sure what kind of erotica movies you're watching in London but they have good taste.

blz - thanks

loocas - wow thanks! Thats actually a guy on the back of beast, but no worries.

xenfive - thank you, I appreciate it.

JoseLuis3D - thanks. The music was created in three days by the multi-skilled musician Eli Costello and compositer Liam Wong.. and I'm very happy for what they've done for me.

Scithious - I'm happy you like it. The textures are hand painted.

lordsol - thanks. I try to get 7 hours sleep a night, other than that I'm either at school or home for supper.

dwarns - thanks

Zoox - thank you

LISEK - hope you like it!

andre_branco - hey there Andre. You are my favourite Portuguese. You've always been their motivating me along the way and I really appreciate it. Keep in touch will ya?

Royal - thanks for the crits, I will consider cutting the walk cycle. The beast rig was to show how it worked and what it was made of. Theere would be a totally different setup for an animator.

frameless - thanks!

mustan9 - wow thanks mustan9, it was nice to have you along the way while it was still a work in progress. I'll keep you posted on where I end up and expect some more WIP's in the future.. (if work allows me). Cheers.

Tr@cer - thank you. They teach you the basics of everything but its up to you how to apply and and learn more from it.

Tizz - hope you like it! I doubt you have one of my old demo reels since this is my first.

fabionguzman - hey fabionguzman, thanks for the friendly comments along the way.. and good luck on you future work.

Adam, you truly are a prodigy to behold.
As with the other students in the class, you inspired me and kept me going in the terms where I felt I hit the wall. You are a prime example of what can be achieved when you are passionate about your work, and I feel honoured to have been a classmate of yours!

I know I've said this alot, but I really think our class is one of the best to come out of this school. I'm glad we all are friends are were able to help each other out as much as we could.
In 10 years time, we definately need to have some sort of 3d53 reunion.

You're going to have a great career, so congratulations! You rock so much, it rivals the amount that a fat kid loves cake. And that's A-L-O-T.

Awesome Work dude... I like Fat omnivores.

I want to tell you how amazing all details are and you have a very impressive reel, keep it up...

I was wondering how you rigged up the auto fat jiggle on your beast? I've used dynamic hair curves and spline Ik, but it never works in real time like yours obviously is...
do you have expressions or is it just some clever set driven key?

___edit
never mind...The overlapping actions is done by soft constraints in XSI.. mostly by constraining a percentage of the position to another object. Thanks, glad you like it."quoted"

First of all, congrats. :)

I was wondering about the bump textures you did for the Robot, it looks very detailled even if you're near the surface... I tried the same thing, but it didn't worked as well, my textures tends to become fuzzy when you approach the camera, ruining the details...

So, questions ! How big were your robots' maps ? Did you use some particular filter ? Any trick ?

Thanks for the answers... and good luck to ya ! ;)

Hi Adam,

your demo reel is breathtaking awesome. Your meshes as well as your mappings and textures are perfect. Your rigs especially the one of the monster and its rider are great. I like the reaction of the rider when the monster moves. How much scripting did you have to do for that?

I wish you all the luck you need to get the job you are dreaming of but I am sure that you should not have any problems.

I am looking forward to your future work.

r1d3r - Thank you John! It was nice to have you around, except when you were rendering on every computer available. I look forward to seeing what kind of work you make in the future.. who knows, we might be working together someday. Keep in touch John.

DiGiFran - thanks!

Chems - heya Chems. I think I'm done with the modeling for the school year. It would be pretty wicked to have the turret firing.. but that'd be breaking into the visual effects stream. Thanks for your help along the way buddy.

Keith T - hey there Keith, thanks for the nice reply. I hope to see you on our grad party, if you're still in the area. I saw your final reel.. awesome job! You must be working at a place you love. Everytime I saw that slingshot bullet hit to the noggin it made me laugh!

FalseCatherdral - thank you!

fabianloing - hei fabian! Good to hear from you. I'm looking forward to seeing what you're up to, so catch me on msn sometime. Thanks for the motivation along the way!

ThreeDeityMike - thank you

McFly - thanks the feedback McFly

feebsicle - hey there Feebs. Your comments are very flattering. I've always loved your work and you're singing. I'm excited to see where you're going to end up, and I'll see you at that reunion.. I believe it'll be mandatory attendance. Keep in touch.

DirtEater - hah good eye DirtEater.. I have 4 years left on that certificate before it expires, so I'll have to renew it somewhere down the road. Thanks for the reply!

Tilstrom - thank you, glad you like it

Roadrunner4D - wow thanks! Always welcoming the twinklers.

Funxer - thanks for the comment and I'm happy I can answer your questions. Fat things rule.

kcfang - hahah thanks!

kOmoo - thank you kOmoo

nath devlin - nice to know I'm inspiring you, thanks!

Davlin - I used 4 maps on the robot. Broken up into camoflauge metal, shiny metal, soft (leather, skin, rubber), and glass. The camo was a 4k map, shiny was 2k, soft was 2k and glass was 1k. There's a scripting trick in XSI to make the bump sharper than the slider lets you. To do it, move the slider that controls the stepping. Open your script and copy and paste the slider script that shows the new set number for the stepping. Manually type in 0.0001 at the end (the slider only lets you go down to 0.001). I also used a sharpen effect in After Effects which may help with that as well. Thanks for the interest!

MK-3.COM - Thank you for your lovely comment.

kriscain - thanks!

Neeno - ol' neener, great to hear from you. You must be pumping in the moola with your work schedule. Hopefully you'll be able to get some time off and start some WIP threads. Thanks for the support along the way.

Noryx - wow thanks Noryx! Breathtaking awesome haha thanks. I didn't use any scriping for the rider's reaction. I used soft position contraints to control it. They are simple and quick to set up. A little hastle if you're batch rendering but well worth it. I had a lot of fun playing with the rig once it was set up.

porkchopexpress - thank you porkchop man!

psr421 - thanks Paul, I really appreciate your reply. I love hearing comments like yours.

Flying-Hawk - haha thanks!

pepelepuke - wow thanks Terence, always a pleasure to help you along when you need it. You'll be doing the same when you're finishing your year. Make sure to remember me when you go big. Nice to work with you and keep in touch.. chuck me on your msn will ya?

Davlin asked a question on page #6 about how you made the textures of your Robot so crisp even close up.

I remember it wasn’t at first even though you used at least a 4k map, you used the sharpen filter in After-Effects on at least the diffuse layer. Which is a fairly common practise. As well as adjusting the overall levels & de-saturating, then adjusting the individual colour levels to eliminate the harsh yellows in the over exposed areas. Did I miss anything?

Well good work I guess… one month left and you don’t update those basic phong pedestals must be too busy answering fan mail:) And what’s up with that walk cycle:) well that is why I’m no longer animating, I just can’t tell that its bad…

The proof that the rig actually works could never detract from a modellers reel, but I digress you must have heard enough from me by now!

Another good modeling reel:) And more to come in a few weeks!!!

Great work all of you in 53!

Davlin
09-23-2005, 10:58 AM
Thanks Scotcho & Boundingbox for your answers, I think I see a little bit more clearly now. :)

But I'd like some details...

I used 4 maps on the robot. Broken up into camoflauge metal, shiny metal, soft (leather, skin, rubber), and glass. The camo was a 4k map, shiny was 2k, soft was 2k and glass was 1k.

So, I understood that the 4K is part of the answer. I tried to use a 2K, to test the distance/fuzzy thing, but it seemed that, at my robot's scale ( approx. 3 meters high ), I can't go nearer than 3 "meters", or it gets messing the look of the textures...

There's a scripting trick in XSI to make the bump sharper than the slider lets you.
Unfortunately, I'm a MAX user. :(
So that useful tip won't be of any help... Damn.

I also used a sharpen effect in After Effects which may help with that as well. Thanks for the interest!

.As well as adjusting the overall levels & de-saturating, then adjusting the individual colour levels to eliminate the harsh yellows in the over exposed areas. Did I miss anything?
So, if I understand correctly, you make only animation, compositing your layers in AE and then, extract some static pictures out of it ?
I didn't thought about that at all... If I want to render a simple, static image with no animation, can't I use only Photoshop ? Does AE possess tools that Photoshop don't ?

Thanks for the replies,

Bye !

Deadtown Ripper - thanks buddy!

mcoxeter - thank you

boundingbox - hey Mike. You pretty much covered the bump texturing crispness. I'd like to see you try and pump out some animation or some crazy rig so I can see what you're capable of.. maybe even get a cool job. Thanks for the help along the way.. I've learned a lot from you. Throw me on your msn and keep in touch. Oh, and those bases were lambert, not phong.

Davlin - You can composite in photoshop, there is a sharpen effect in there as well. You can also render a single frame through AE. I did that for a still of my robot because I had all the proper adjustments for each pass set up, and I could just copy and paste them. Not sure why your textures is getting messed when you look at them closer, or how they are getting messed. If you're losing detail I'd suggest a larger map size. You may have to start from scratch though because scaling your 2k map to 4k would do nothing except increase rendertime. Hope some of these tricks help you out.

kndrewa - thanks

olliemethod - hey there Paul. Thanks for the reply! It's been great to work with you. You've helped me a lot with AE when I needed it. I believe we both pushed eachother along the way. I look forward to seeing what your final will look like; there is no doubt in my mind you'll be swept up fast, much like the rest in our class. Keep on your hacky, and keep in touch. I might see you down the road.

kwangyong - thanks kwang! You were always there to motivate me and I appreciate it. See you at the 53 party!

I am almost finished with my 2yr. degree and was really considering going to VFS. I saw that the programs there are only a year long. Is this true? If so do you feel the education gained here is great given the short time of the program. Also it says you obtain a degree what type is it or is it just a certificate. Really need some help. Going to have to decide were to go and all the work I see out of VFS by far beats work shown at other institutions.
