Ok. So it isn't much at the moment.. gosh everyone already has so much going on it's crazy. So i'm a couple of weeks late :P At the moment I will be happy if I just finish. Really going for a Frazetta style here... something that doesnt look like it has polygons, focusing on colour and composition... power and beauty. I will be using a few generic models for the main part... man, horse.. and so on, and going from there. One of the main challenges will be keeping the focus on the main characters and not cluttering the scene with so much going on. Will be busy this week.. hopefully I will get a bit done on the weekend. Pleeeaaase crit :) Anything is helpful :)

Here is the concept with some of the colours I am thinking about... like I said.. a bit of Frazetta.

Just a couple of updates here. Have been doing a lot of conceptual work this weekend. Here is the 2D sketch update (still a way to go here). I was doing some 3d shield design to try to get my bronze right. The mesh is pretty basic, didnt work out so good so will keep trying at that (maybe just too rushed. Was also designing the main mounted character... going for a hun or maybe scythian style.

Also started making my generic model for the project. Will be doing this all day today so expect another update later..(maybe late :P) tonight. Kinda doing everything at once to keep my inspiration.

Just a little update on the model. Will be adding feet and hands, hopefully I will finish before tonight... the weekend just isnt long enough ><.

Just a quick texture of an old helm of mine. Does this look roughly like bronze? Anyway would appreciate any advice :)

Lot of work ahead, but nice start so far. Your body's proportions look good, very natural.
Was wondering if maybe the bronze needs to be a little duller and darker to look worn/used, maybe the more burnished areas would have the shine and yellowness of the material you have, not too sure, hard not to end up with it looking like gold when it's new bronze. Guess if you look at reference images of the material you'll see this.
Anyway, good luck, keep plugging away :)

Hey man, now i see the bronze thing u told me, your material looks very good, and your modeling skillz are just great, ill be watching your entry:)

Ergh... I hate hands and feet :P but anyway.. done now.. Used a lot of visual reference from on of my old models so I didnt have to think too much :P Will be doing the head the rest of the week I guess.
rattlesnake: I havent really got the bronze figured out yet either.. but thanks for having a look, I really appreciate it :)
mistermac: thnx man ^^. I think you are prob right about that.. I will have another try this weekend :)

That's nice body modelling, but I think you could add some more mussle details to area around neck.
Hey Thierry, thnx for you post before... sorry I didnt get back earlier :P Definitely will be a lot of work ahead... I think I will be happy if I just finish it.. 2D section might just have to take it for the team for the moment :P
suk-grigorij: Hey thnx man, yours is looking awesome! Will be keeping an eye on your thread. Looking forward to seeing more updates! I will be tweeking the neck a bit more when I add the head :)

haaaaa the weekend again XD. Well this is what I have been working on this week. I am really trying to get the kind of face the belongs in a battle, still needs some work yet, but I might leave it there for the moment and see what it looks like on the body :)

Nice head modelling, but his forehead is a bit low and flat, no?

Great modeling so far. I must mention that the bottom half of the nose needs work, the ears should be bent further from the head, and the eyes should be pulled into the head more (more concave eye socket). Outside of that, great sketches and modeling. This is gonna turn out great!

Just had a look at those things you guys were talking about. Some great advice thnx :)

Was just thinking.. is it worth salvaging anything from this old model of mine? hmm... frazetta anatomy is still the objective.

Ok.. been wasting a lot of time tweeking, but I think it's getting near where I want it to be. Will start texturing and tweek as I see it. Render is using just a basic fast sss at the moment.

Working on my skin textures. Thank god unwrapping is done.. that took way too long. Any advice would be really helpful ^^... before I do the whole body like this. Textures are hand basically hand painted, I used 50x50 pixel or so ref to clone about initially.
Oh yea... ear needs work I admit... getting to that, so just ignore that for the moment :)
gardogg
10-02-2005, 06:12 PM
I agree about the ear needing work... I would say the texture needs to have a bit more specularity maybe. It looks kind of dry. It also looks possibly too brown. Something about it isn't working for me. But, it is a great start and it is approaching looking realistic. Keep it up!

Ok... so been tweeking the face texture a lot :P slow going though.. and hard for me to see where i'm going wrong... so any advice would be very much appreciated! :)
Oh and thanks very much gardogg. Great advice! I had those things in the back of my mind... but it was really helpful to see what stood out to you :)

Really nice shader, what software/rednerer are you using?
I don't think you're doing too much wrong at all. It does seem like a strange decision to texture the head before joing the two halves. With the level of realism you have achieved so far it'll be a shame not to give to head some sort of asymmetry to make it bit more natural. Plus you're going to end up with a bit of a butterfly effect where areas of detail are mirrored down the centre of the face...
Texture wise i'd say its really good. The modeling on the eye looks like it could do with a bit more detail just to define the eyelids a bit.
Good work, look forward to more updates...

Wow really impressive texturing job ...
Congrat , and can't wait to see more
Thnx guys :) I have been watching your entries too ^^.
Swamps: thnx mate ;) I'm using 3dsmax at the moment with fast sss/mental ray. Avoiding zbrush if I can bacause my comp is getting a little slow and old. I am texturing now to get the shader right, i will unwrap 2 seperate halves when I join them, I just wanted to get it looking right first, but thnx for the thought :)
Zapan: thnx a lot mate :) Really means a lot coming from you ^^.

You can use zbrush even with that old comp. The key is, instead of trying to import the million plus poly mesh into 3ds max, just create a displacement map in zbrush and apply that to the base mesh you made in 3ds max. This way, you'll get all of that detail for the price of a simple texture. It shouldn't bog down your scene much at all. Hope that helps. Sorry if I'm saying something you already are aware of...
Thnx gardogg, yea maybe you are right... I will be starting on my horse this weekend so I might give it a go then.

Hi!
The texture face are looking really good. Keep it up...
Just a little update. Things just aren't working for me at the moment.. been having a lot of trouble texturing this little guy.. and will probably be starting again tomorrow.. for like the 5th time. Anyway... :P

Haven't updated for a while. Been so busy lately I have been wondering if I will finish at all! Horse was so bad I really regret posting it :P Will have another go this weekend... i'm sure it will be %1000 as I have some good refs now.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/9001/9001_1131182202_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/9001/9001_1131182202_large.jpg)
It's been a while since I have posted anything, I have been having a lot of trouble with my horse and my metal texturing. Here was a quick study I did today, just trying to get soemthing that worked. You can see a couple photo refs in there :P, and a lack of geometry, but I think I finally have the colours I want to continue. I will be handpainting all final project textures.

Don't look too deep into it.. the purpose of this was just to get a metal tone I was happy with :)
