Howdy everyone....

Here's a short animation I made. The idea was to blow up one of those easter island heads. Originally it was a particle dispersion test (the head was going to blow away like dust)....but the comps here couldn't handle the number of particles needed for such an effect so I of course turned to huge explosions instead ;)

Pretty self explanatory...everything was rendered with the 3dsmax scanline renderer. The volumentrics were done with afterburn and afterfx was used to incorporate sound effects and do color correction etc.

Hope you like it! Post your comments :D ....and turn your speakers on!

Oh....and super special thanks to Cameron James for the afterburn lesson ;)

By the way....I'm in the process of fixing the squary-ness of the big chunks that fall down at the end....I'll post the update when it's done so check back soon!

as usual... sick as hell... nice work man. I really like the camera move. The only, really nit picky thing would be that the broken shards of stone don't effect the smoke. I would think there would be some serious air pulling and pushing the smoke as the larger chunks fall through it. As it is the smoke is pretty static after the initial impact. And maybe also a little bit of rock debris/dust trails falling off the medium sized pieces of rock as they fly through the air. Does that make sense?.. Like I said.. Really super nit picky.. over all it's awsome.

I know :(...but the way I've got my afterburn particles set up that would be impossible...right now each particle is huge and all the detail you're seeing is in the ABurn fractal map.....so if I were to have the chunks affect the actual PArray particles....huge globs off ABurn smoke would move around at once...does that make sense?

But...on that note....good point on the smoke trails coming from the bigger pieces....I'm gonna go add that now ;)...(while the re-do on the main chunks is rendering as noted, hehe)

This is REALLY cool

Did you use Particle flow for statue explosion?

nice work...waiting for updated one.

Hi Alom...yes...particle flow was used for all of the little chunks. On the other hand, PArrays and Supersprays were used for the smoke :)

yeah that totally makes sense. I wasn't sure how it was setup exactly. perhaps maybe just increasing the turbulance a bit to give it more random chaos would help? or do nothing at all.. still looks dam good.

Hey Ivan
I really like you work.....You have great potential....:bounce: :bounce:

Hehe....well although I'm rendering out a new pass with non-uniform chunks (and also trying a separate pass with some added smoke coming from the falling debris)....I don't have the time to re-render the main smoke pass again :P......the deadline for this shot is today and it takes anywhere from 2-6 hours per frame to render the main smoke/fire lol....even on the farm here that's still like 1.5 days. Ah well....now I know where to improve next time eh ;)

Thanks again for the critique!

Awesome sound and visual, only thing that REALLY gets me is that when it hits the rock you see tons of rock and debree fly really fast to the right, but there is a big chunk just sitting there and just slides off. With that much force I feel a pressure feeling, like its building up and when it hits everything should have so much force it expands the object. If that made any sense then basically what I was saying is that it should explode, not just slide (like you did on the right side).

Hope this helps, cool concept.

LOL!! BOOOMM!! how u did glow on that asteroids? i did try glow effect with afterburn but it didn;t work well. also motion blur effect i tried is also little wierd.

man the one thing bother me is that breaking of rocks looks little unreal.

but everything else is gr8 as always.

keep it up tyson.

hey tyson i was reviewing ur animation.but i found something mistake on frame 80 and 81.

if u carefully see there is visible only one asteroid trail(See picture) at frame 80.

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1323/frame800ok.th.jpg (http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=frame800ok.jpg)

now after next frame thee comes another smoke trail.actually it jumps there.but actually it shouldn;t.see picture.i hope u understand what i m saying.see marked area.

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1811/frame811zq.th.jpg (http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=frame811zq.jpg)

if u can;t get from images.just see ur animation in marked area(marked white line).so u can understand it better.
u can fix it.

Hey the_jigu....the glow was done using the Stylize-->Glow effect in Afterfx :)

ivanisavich
09-20-2005, 08:26 AM
Good call man...I'll fix that before posting the update ;)

jigu
09-20-2005, 08:29 AM
Hey the_jigu....the glow was done using the Stylize-->Glow effect in Afterfx :)

so u rendered particles alone from 3ds max(with alpha chennels,as tga files).

hmm that will be better.

ivanisavich
09-20-2005, 08:33 AM
Yes....every element you see is a separate pass. Fireball....smoke....explosion chunks....environment etc :)

You know when I watched this peice I thought of the guy that made the armor dude running on the ground, with fog in the background, doing a roll, shooting his gun, and jumping on a bike and riding away. And as soon as I came back to this thread I realize its the same person, lol. You do awesome work tyson, I enjoy it.
*edit* wow! you did The Beast Within??? man I remember watching that way back when, thats what really got me interested in doing VFX and animating, your my hero! lol....

ivanisavich
09-20-2005, 09:40 AM
Hey that's awesome man! Glad I could be an inspiration to ya ;)

How'd you see "The Beast Within"? Off my site or somewhere else?

JonyK
09-20-2005, 10:28 AM
I know it wasn't off of your site, because my first time there was a few days ago. I used to browse cgtalk a ton without posting anything, I do that a lot. So, I can't remember where I've seen it, if you posted it on here or another site, thats possibly where I've seen it. But ya, heh, back on topic, im wondering if you create your own sounds and if you do how do you go about doing that without all the expensive recording studio, etc.

ivanisavich
09-20-2005, 10:44 AM
Oh ok yeah....it was on here for a bit....and also on milkandcookies for a while (and a bunch of little sites)....so any of those are fair game ;)

I get 95% of my sounds from video games or sound effects cds (my old local library used to have tons of royalty free sound cds which you could borrow).....the rest of the 5% I get off the net.

www.findsounds.com (http://www.findsounds.com) <--great site :)

K.....I updated the animation.

The extra smoke I was trying to add wasn't working out....so all I changed was the square-ness of the big chunks and the smoke bug that the_jigu pointed out.

Enjoy :)

thanks tyson...second wire is just enought for me to know how it;s composited?

really u always amazed me!!:D

Hi Ivanisevich
I really like the simulation, but what really catches my eye is the camera movement. Excellent compositing job. I see you are very much into high tech staff, games, and VFX. You are an excellent VFX artist. Where do you want to end up - games or movies?
Best luck of all.
Suzana (if you are thinking the same ivanisevich like I do, he comes from my country (Croatia) and he was born in the same town like I was - Split).

ivanisavich
09-21-2005, 08:46 AM
Heheh...Hi Suzana,

I'm glad you enjoyed the camera work...I always try to add some into my animations so I guess that's my "trademark" ;)

Personally I'd like to work at an FX studio (like I do right now) for the remainder of my career. I like the short-termness of projects and it's nice being able to do a mixture of character animation and effects work (rather than just one or the other)....although if Pixar offers me a job I'd certainly not turn them down ;)

I really like the first part of the animation, those missles or what ever it is, but i think you maybe should go a little matrix on them just before they hit the rock, i mean go into bulletime, cycle around them and then boom.

mttjss
09-22-2005, 01:26 PM
ivanisavich - kOmoo's idea with the bullet time seemed cool. I had the idea that it hits the first rocks, but then continues on to watch the second asteroid hit. I think the classic "debris flying at the camera as if you are there" would add a touch of realism to it.

critique - I am bothered by the "cg" feel of the rocks that the asteroid hits - they dont feel as if they are real and flying apart. other than that, you know I love your work.

looking forward to more of this stuff! good job.

edit - just noticed those were easter island heads that are being blown apart - haha nice!:D

kOmoo....no sorry man...too chessy ;)

mttjss: good point....my boss just got back from his business trip so today was the first time he saw the piece (and he suggested some areas for improvement)....which means I'll be working on it a bit more......so if I make any changes worth noting, I'll make sure to post the updates! :)

I am always amazed by how good you are and at such a young age. Now, a couple crits/opinions:
I think the camera could have revealed what it was about to hit a little sooner to identify the target. It happens so fast that, if you didn't say what it was you were blowing up, I would have had to rewind to see what it was.
Also, I felt the rock fragments looked too evenly sharp and pointy. That may just be my opinion, but I don't think they would break like that from that kind of hit but, I admit, I am not a demolition expert and could be totally wrong.
Also, I felt the large smoke cloud moved too slowly and looked frozen.
Overall, a very cool animation. :buttrock:
