give me a break.

this part of the software is so amazingly buggy and unpredictable. Its increadibly easy to break. I have files with 10+ render layers and if i go change the slightest thing on a shader in a reference....ALL the layers break.

Please people, be careful....

I'm using renferences, maya and Mental renderers. I'm using mental ray skin shaders....

Objects loose the correct surfaces for their render layers. objects switch surfaces/shaders.

its all trash.

Sad news.

when you render from the command line u must use the -r file command. this is the ONLY way to make it switch renderers. You can find this information if you do "render -?" at the command prompt, and u will see all the toys.

that's not what i meant. i meant make a scene and it contain for instance a sphere, plane, and cube

make a layer for each and name it according to each object.

for instance the speher layer will be rendered with mr,plane with maya soft , cube with hardware render. if you choosen render->batch render it will work fine but with rendr from the command line no. acutally i waited about day and half and the log file keep telling me flushing failed.when I do it from maya window it don't  (i tryed 4-6 times and different files )not to mention that it don't tell me that it switch renders ..maybe i should do it throw pre-post render layers mel ? if yes can someone tells me how?

thx in advance.

search for francesca's ctrl_buffers shader on this forum.. there is an extensive thread here on implementing and using it.

Yes, i agree that Maya's pass rendering is total garbage, so we've written our own frame buffer output shader at work, and it works wonders for Mray pass rendering... behaves much like Renderman's AOVs. I can't imagine life without it :)

oh and.. it's a mental ray shader, so it obviously won't work for Maya soft. renders

not only is it horribly buggy...but its also unusable on renderfarms.

what is the problem with a renderfarm?

btw.. i started another thread about it: for me i can only render to maya .IFF files. if i use e.g. softimage .PIC, the renderering will break after the first frame.. am i the only one to encounter that?

cheers

i am using on a renderfarm. it does work, but it takes more effort than its worth.

i will share a muster preset when i get to work....

ppl creticize you when u say "alias will have yet another meager release"
then boom... in your face, plenty of bugs, craps and things u need to work around...
oh well, theres always maya8 to get it rite ... or 11.

go softimage!

i use both... so i can say that i prefer some features on one to the other...

in general, what do you do in XSI. do you render there?....

basically using any software that i would like to is a very good idea..
but it stops working when someone has to pay the bill.
for smaller companies it simply is not possible to do so.

but back to my question: why is there a problem with renderfarms and the new layers Lorecanth?
i dont really see a problem yet other than they changed the order in which it gets rendered (sequential vs. frame order).

we use muster and at least all tests worked out after fixing a maya preference bug :/

alexx: One possible renderfarm problem is the way render-layers allow you to specify different renderers for each layer. Some current render-management software (pre-maya 7 versions)would possibly not take this into consideration when launching a render. For example smedge forces you to choose the renderer - either "maya" (read software) or mentalray-for-maya. Then the command it launches has the renderer specified using the '-r' flag.

In maya7 a new render-flag option called 'file' was introduced - to tell mayabatch to use the renderer(s) specified in the scene file.

In the smedge example, I had to use a bit of scripting (smedge calls them "virtual modules") to change the way the command was being issued, and be able to use render-layers. (Im sure most (good) render-managers will be updated to be maya7 aware in the near future. )

hehe.. come on.
it is absolutely normal that you have to buy a new render queue manager every time maya gets an update.. (ok ok.. not this time: free update)

alias tends to change the command line for rendering in at least every 2 versions completely :)

once i was so pi*** about that, that we rendered half a year using the "custom job" in muster because no one in the company was willing to spent another 1000$ just because they changed the command line options so much again :)
(btw: i wrote my own batch submission scripts some years ago - and since then i am quite happy )

cheers
