View Full Version : Joseph Yang Modelling reel
helicopterr 09-18-2005, 09:29 PM My name is Joseph Yang. I recently graduated from college and is looking to get into the cg industry. I made a character modelling reel a month ago of some fantastical characters but felt it did not really show what I think employers are really looking for, namely, human anatomical knowledge so I redid the reel with an emphasis on that. The only thing left from my previous reel is the soldier model with a gatling gun which I thought was interesting.
I think there are still some details bothering me in the reel and I will be working on those so all critiques and comments are greatly appreicated. Thanks for looking!
Sorry about the filesize I will be putting up a smaller version soon

Hi Joseph. Your showreel is great. Beautiful modeled characters.
If I have to say something it would be, make it even shorter. Cut out 20-30 more second and I think it would be better.

Looks great, the strongest works at the front. I'd probably leave some of the weeker sketches out at the end.

Thanks for responding guys!
I think I will take out some of the sketches at the end and make the reel shorter.

Hi Joseph, it's me again!
I'm not gonna tell you what to do with your future career :wise:, haha.
but DAMN, what the hell were you doing with that animation post when you got this amazing stuff laying around? Anyways, the models look awesome, they have a style to them that reminds me of the drawings out of the Muybridge anatomy books. Dude with the gun is friggin creepy... It's easy to see that your strengths are in modelling and somewhat texturing.
as for the demo itself, love the music (i mentioned this was missing on your animation video), and I for one would leave the sketches, they're great, i don't really see one that would deduct any marks off your reel overall but the last drawing should come 2nd then all the lifedrawings. But ya, the model rotations? way too long, i think once around textured, once around wires is plenty. Awesome stuff man!

suzana_kilic - Thanks for the your encouragement and critique on the animation, I will continue to try my best!
Radiospank - I noticed about the turning time but that was intended to make sure that the reel viewer have enough time to inspect all the details.
Geese Howard - The animation was my attempt to broaden my skill set but I definitely agree with you that I am more familiar with anatomical modelling than with animation. The sketches that riki was responding to were already removed as this reel as been revised many times. By the way, the models were not textured but rendered with SSS and OC and I am actually working on texturing them right now.
Thanks again to everybody who responded it means alot to me as those of you who posted works on CGtalk probably know.

Hey Joseph!
Very cool models. My favourite is the guy with the gun, you are really talented! Only one or two critics on your reel. First of all, it is a little bit to long, try to cut out a few seconds of the model rotations. For me stops your reel very abruptly. Maybe it makes sense, when youŽll create credits --> Your name, email... what not, some informations about the programms you work with.
Anyway, good work!!!
