Very nice and precise reference renderings. Much appreciated! You must be a very patient person : - )

I tested out the new mib_glossy_reflect as described in the mental ray docs and at first I was very impressed by the results. But unfortunatly the render times exploded once I have put anything transparent in my test scene. Does anyone know a good setup how to have glossy reflections and transparency in a scene with acceptable rendertime?

I do like the new "streching effect" (sun set) of the mib_glossy_reflect very much.

i dont know for the trasparency problem, maybe i can make some test with dielectric and l_glass ;)

I guess the main reason for the speed hit is the fact that ctrl_shading does not compute glossy (but full shiny instead) after the given raydepth, which is controlled by reflect_depth, or 'Depth' in the AE. Also, there does not happen any other computation beside the plain reflection - that's probably why the mib_glossy_reflect comes closest to the rendertimes of ctrl_shading. All the other shaders like blinn and dgs_fresnel imply more complicated calculations for the reflection result, and therefore take longer to render.

Dont get me wrong, the ctrl_shading is a great shader - one of my most favorites, mainly because of it's speed and flexibility. But to compare it speedwise to a blinn or dgs_fresnel, shouldnt there be more equality of opportunity? However, I dont get why the phong is as slow as the blinn...

Dont know if it's clear or not, but out of the readme of ctrl_shading:
the depth is not the general reflection depth but
it acts only for blurred reflections, - up to 1 any objects reflecting the
blurred reflections we'll see perfect reflection instead.
I guess it wouldnt make much sense to suppress this optimization just for comparison. No, I meant to build in a fresnel shader for the ctrl_shading and mib_glossy for example.

edit: the dgs_fresnel does not use the classic dgs glossy reflection, it uses ReflectionUtility instead. Just for your info - so the ReflectionUtility would maybe be a different candidate to test?

oh ok! ;) now i've understood the word "opportunity"
but you can combine ctrl_fresnel with ctrl_shading, or use your monolithic shader for more flexibility ;)

Wow dagon1978 These test are just amazing.

You think is possible to make the first scene with ctrl_shading (http://yashu.go.ro/pub/maya/mentalray/ctrl_shading_1.2.zip) downloable so some of can study it.
