View Full Version : Animation: Man vs Box (vs Animator)
CoolCalb 11-08-2002, 02:58 PM Hi all ,
I did a 10 sec animation for an animation challenge on
www.xsibase.com .
as the title says, the challenge was a biped pushing a man-sized
box.

Zipped QT 2.1MB : http://members.lycos.co.uk/coolcalb2/animation/coolcalb.zip
I also made a silly sound track (most recomended)

and if you use XSI and wish to get the .scn file, here it is:

p.s I know the "punch" it too fast, I got a lame excuse

thanks Irie, LordShaitan,
LordShaitan, could you please be more specific regarding
the things that bother you about the run?
thanks,

I agree with the run. The form is fine but it seems to floaty. The appearance of wieght is not there. Other than that I enjoyed the rest.

Excellent work, Very funny indeed! Only two points about it the feet as he approaches the cube don't quite look right they need to flop a bit more I think and when the animator is using the menu I had to rewind it several times to see what he is doing, I think you should hold that menu option up for a bit longer on the screen.
Otherwise the character has excelent animation that sucks you in and is so natural to the eye that you can enjoy the 10 second one liner.
Great idea, Great execution! :bounce:

I thought it was pretty sweet. The run up to the box clashed with the motion of him pushing. I would have liked about 6 or seven more frames of the menu..
Really nice..

CoolCalb you rock.
I thought the run was funny. It looked like he was all silly and lacking in intelligence to me.
I saw this on XSI base and it was my favorite. Your gonna run away with it.
I like your work..
What ever happened to Nutz (was i right) your kickass dog.
heheh I loved that dog.. Funny funny.
See you around.

thanks guys!
ByshopLynx: the run was inteneded to be very light weight,
with very little time on the ground, and alot of "air"
time kind of long skips...
I guess it's not in the same language as the push
action, so it looks weird to people...
Frank Dodd: you're right, his feet motion is not storng enugh
when he aproaches the box.. about the menu.. well
I thought I could go over the 10 secs of the
challenge, and I found out I cant, too late, and didnt
want to give up on any of the animation I did so far..
so I needed to squiz in the menu action.. I figured
people would not be able to read the "remove all
constraints" on the first time.. cinematically I did
wrong, but I was sure people would "rewind" to see
what it was.. I wanted to fix that.. but my boss keep
throwing real boring work at me, and I cant find the
time :)
awake: thanks, you just make the point stronger, that the run
and the push are in two totaly different animation
languages. I wanted to do such a skippy run long time
ago, and thought the challenge is a good opportnity :)
Rudity: yep, he's dumb.. :) that was the intention :)
Nutsz is waiting for a new rig.. I continued his animation
but I got stuck because of the shitty rig I built..
I just can't do certain things with that rig..
as soon as we get our XSI 3.0 packages, I'll fix him up
with the new quadruped rig that comes with v3..
it's really frusterating to try animating with a limited rigg..

Very funny short :) I laughed hard at the constraint gag; it was a novel way of approaching it.

Sorry it took m so long.
The run.. It seems like there is no weight transfered when he makes his strides. So it looks like there is no weight to him and he is just kind of floating along. Since this is a styliezed aniamtion why not make the run more stylized. And i dont know if you did this but, it looks as though you have cloned the keys for the first run and used it on the second one, thus making a run cycle. Not to sound like you dont nkow, but Just remember that their are no cycles in life.
Even though when we are running we dont plant our foot for long, we still stransfer all of our weight to it and then we push with all of our might off of it.
Hopefully i helpd you out a little bit.

thanks barley:)
thanks for your answer lordshaitan!
you are right, there is very little weight trasfered,
I thougt it works good for the light skippin.. guess I am wrong :)
and yes you got me! I did clone the second stride from the first
I thought it wouldnt be noticable for 2 or 2.5 strides..
wrong again ! :)
funny, from that camera angle you cant see he's also skipping
a little from left to right.. here's a quick capture of the run
from the front.. still didnt fix the weight shift thou..

Kind of funny how we can pick up on something that is duplicated huh? Damn us humans for being so perspective! heh makes us have to work harder.
Hmm i just checked out the litle clip, and maybe for some reason it looked odd from the camera angle before, but from that front angle it looks nice (Great secondary motions!!!) Even though it loks better from the front, but it still kind of looks like he is maybe jumping with maybe moon shoes on, he has a lot of bounce to him. Still a great animation tough!
