View Full Version : Light Instances with Optical FX
danylyon 11-08-2002, 11:03 AM Hello everyone.. I got into a small problem..
I take a light.. add an optical FX to it.. then I make 11 Instances of that light.. unfortunatly.. the Optical FX can only be seen on the first one. Mhm.. is there a trick.. or is this not supported?
If this is not supported (and I'll have to make copys instead).. is there a way I can apply the same OpticalFX to all the copies? Or is it only possible to have one light for each OpticalFX.
Using Maya 4.0 here.

Try to instance them on particules use the jms_pr.mel script you can get it at either gnomon or highend3d
what i would do is, select the particuletool and create 11 points, use jms_pr and your lights should be instanced.
i asked the same question 4 days ago, now with this script i can instace lights, but my only trouble is that they wont showup in software render.
Anyone knows why ?

..and there is no other/easier way to do this?? i can't bellieve it.. i searched about 10min in the library and all i found was some damn information about light liking... but thx for the script;)

optical effects are tricky with lights if you want to re-use them. you'll have to go into the hypershade and manually connect everything.
as for instancing lights, I usually dupe my lights, place them where I need and the group them. create attributes that you'll want in the group node and link all your lights to those.

Everyting works for light linking using jms_pr.
My only trouble is that why cant i see them in the software render once they are instanced, i see my original but not the instanced.
Anyone knows why ?

jms_pr.mel
Author: JMS
Use: places objects on motion paths generated from particle motion
..the write its for motion paths.. are you shure that this is the right script?

When I've had to set up many lights with optical effects on them I didn't instance them. I just duplicated them and checked the "duplicate Input Graph" box and they would copy fine.
Never tried this with Mental Ray lights yet.

hmm.. its not really the problem to copy the lights... but i don't want to set every single MR-lightshader & area light options inside these 30 pointlights to get the right brightness of my scene...
so.. how is it possible in maya to set the complete mr-lightshader & mr-area light options for 30 light with the same settings???

I have found in the past that if you create all of the lights first then select them all, BEFORE you change any of the attributes, hit control A then change the settings on the one light and the other lights will have the same settings. But they all have to be on the same default setting to begin with or it won't work.
Again I have not tried this with MR yet.

:hmm: and you're sure that you tried it with maya??? ..cause it definitely doesn't work anyway.. so i believe you dreamed it;)

You're right I probably did dream it, I'm sure I did that one once but now come to think of it they were lights that I imported into the scene from a different project and I was high on too much chocolate at the time..
