Do any of you guys have a ATI FireGL (8700/8800) graphics card installed? If so, could you tell me about the performance with Cinema R8? Thank you.

Pretty damn fast, but make sure you have the very latest drivers installed, else it gives you all sorts of funkiness.

While we're on the subject, I have an ATI Radeon Mac Edition 32 mb card on my main monitor and an ancient 16mb Rage AGP on my second monitor. Of course I won't be modelling or really utilizing openGL on second--just for interface space and rendering.

Will R8 run pretty much the same as R7 considering these specs or will uprading to a newer card REALLY be worth it and make a siginificant difference? I've heard that the Mac accelleration with R8 is minimal anyway--so if its only gonna improve things by a second or 2 than I guess I'll wait till Apple figures out hown to utilize the graphic cards to there fullest.

Thanks in advance Mash!

i'm using a mac, and i have a g4 ti card in there... it's a lot faster in v8 than in v7... a lot lot faster. rendering is about the same honestly (maybe a slight increase in speed) so a new graphics card will make a hell of a differencce inmho. i also used to use a g4 tibook (500) and it's just so much slower, though the markup in speed working on the much faster machine in v7 wasn't that much, the markup with v8 was... quite a lot.

Interesting.

What model Mac are you running it on? I have a dual 500 mhz machine. I will most likely upgrade to an NVidea card if I can. I'm wondering how much of the speedup is from the card and how much is the processor. If I'm on a dual 500, and an NVidea card iss there a significant difference then on a dual 1ghz? I would hate to buy a card and find out its not so much different. I may just go ahead and (gulp) buy a newer Mac.

went to a dual 867 tower (one of the enw ones)

where you will notice speed up is in rotating the viewports etc, but animation playback will still be at roughly the same rate if you just upgrade the card although the card will help a little by helping the procesor not have to work on ogl calculations so much (anything that involves the processor is still giong to involve the processor, the card just takes up the slack with screen redraw). it's not going to be as fast as a top of the line dual athlon, or dual pentium. the opengl displays are improved no end by having the faster card, and of course i can always shift the card on to another machine if i want.
