your assumption is correct.
(well somewhat, I dont have the faintest idea, your all alone with your fainted idea)
EDIT:
this is probably of interest to no one but I just looked on google and noticed that it came back with..
Results 1 - 10 of about 868,000 for faintest idea.

I think the 'spreadsheet' approach to material managment looks interestings, especially if it allows to drag+drop shaders between the materials.
A novel idea to me, I am used to see Lists as in C4d, or Material-Trees.

man that looks complicated...
however since c4d is already heirarchical in nature making the material manager in a similar-ish vein might be worth considering if well thought out i guess..dunno would have to think about it a little more rather than jumping in feet first..
the speadsheet side of things could i guess also be extended in some functionality also i guess...again really would have to think about it a bit more.

it is treally not so complicated, and of course it does not replace the great OM.
it is probably more for the archviz guy ot fpr people dealing with cad software. it makes live a lot easier.
also like the drag and drop idea. if you forget the ugly max style and imagine it in a nice c4d like interface it could be very great.

ps.: when i worked with formz long time ago i loved the hierachrical layers, once you had them you want them.
now i modell in rhino and c4d, both very great, but layers like rhino, or even better like formz or the example above would be a dream, at least for myself.
i really think this is no strange wish at all, although some might think this here(see strange post above- i dont get it)

Like others that have posted previously in this forum, I would really like to do 100% of my work in C4D. Having layers would be a good step in that direction. I'm not sure about the material manager with C4D. (I still have a few pin feathers.)
I'm going to ask Maxon to add this to the list.

I'm probably alone in this, but, I find that the system as is,
is fine. We can make groups and hide them, or, make them visible and render
or not render them and so on. (The example posted reminds me of the Lightwave
layers and visability system.)
When I get the 9.5 upgrade, I can see where we can further drag groups of stuff
out to the functionality of the content manager. I guess it all comes down to using
the tools you have and developing your own workflow. I'm just now incorporating
the use of the HUD when working. Better late than never.
In terms of the materials, we do have the ability to group those as well.
FWIW, Just my initial thoughts.

When you have worked with software offering alternatives, you can see the shortcomings. I do think that the Object Manager is one of the best scene organisation tools, however it would be nice to be able to organize objects independtly of their parent-cild hierarchy, say by materials, visibility etc... ( The Selection object kind of goes in that direction, but it is just a little step) to be able to 'ghost objects' as well, etc...
Also, regarding materials, I also find the existing system quite straight forward ofr many things, however it is tedious to always have to copy paste between materials, a spreadsheet would come in handy for this. As would shader instancing, and a golbal overview of all shaders, in all materials in a scene...
My point is, C4d has a logical organisation ( esp when compared to ,many other d3 apps), there is room ofr improvment still though.

Point taken. As per my thoughts, I work with what is available to me and what I feel comfortable wih.
There are quite a few things that I still don't use, but, having those items available is a plus.
As per 9.5, when it gets here, I'll make use of the sky feature and play with the new lights.
From there, I'll incorporate what's available. Always willing to learn and sharpen my skills
with what the app offers as well as the generous help of this Cinema group.

I've suggested this to Maxon several times, as have others. What we need is a display-only OM where you can filter everything and arrange everything without consideration to execution order. This wouldn't change the underlying OM heirarchy which *is* needed for execution order concerns.

this is a good idea i think...reminds me a little of tag manager type thing or scene list and tag list in ditools...
think would be good to have a maxon solution to this...please suggest it to them.

It would be so great to be able to sort by items that are made visible, or by specific tag type. I can't tell you how many times I've had to dig, and dig to find a light still turned on, or an object that needs to be made invisible.
I'm kind of hoping that someone will read this and say, "that's easy! Just push the..." :D

Hi Stain,
Well you can use the selection tool to select specific tag types thourhg the whole scene.
The other one would be nice though...
What would be nice woudl be an updated Object Manager, that supports filters, so that it only shows visible objects, or objects with specific materials, or objects according to type, or in an alpahbetical list, without changing the hierarchical structure of the scene....

I'm so glad this topic has come up.
I love the organization of the OM, but have needed a "Layers Palette" where I can group certain objects of a scene independantly of hierarchy.
I will also write to Maxon about this.
