View Full Version : WIP: City Block (Retro Future)
RichTheArtist 09-16-2005, 04:27 AM Hey All,
For this project, i'm creating a city block based in retro future...a setting much like "Blade Runner". This city block in particular is resting in between two buildings pretty high in the sky. I don't have any concept for this project, I kind of just started modeling and i'm seeing where it takes me. As always.. any critiques are welcome.
The pictures below show the progression so far.. I'll keep updating as i get more..

On a side note I am glad your using XSI cuase it's nice to see what wil be possible when I get used to it some more. I am currently using 4.2, and soon 5 :buttrock:

Nice, :)
But i think that its to much empty space in the upper left.

Hey all.. im back with another update. I have been working on little details on the bridge and railings this time around.. The next thing im going to start working on are the two buildings in the background so i'll have another update soon. Also.. in response to what -Zen- said, i'm still kind of unsure what I want in the background over the left and down the hallway.. but I'll think of something soon! Thanks for the encouraging words!

I just wanna say this gives me inspiration for my next project! :bounce:
I REALLY can't wait to see this one textured. I am curious what type of look your gonna go for. A realistic shot? Or something else?

Coming along pretty well. A few wasted polys here and there, but nothing major.
I'd ditch the crates, though. They seem kind of a cop-out of adding realistic clutter. Replace them with something more suited to a street environ, like a dumpster/rubbish bin with some bags around it or fire hydrant and some signposts, newspaper dispenser, etc... but futuristiced up a bit to fit in :P
I think one of the shops should be a "clean air bar". Kinda like the oxygen bars you get if you're rich and stupid nowadays, but here because they're actually needed in such a pollution-filled world.

Hey Buddy,
I am happy to see that you are finally posting some work here! I am liking the detail that you put on the bridge. What are your plans for the walls of that building? THey are looking sparse so far. Maybe you could put some fire-escapes or some futuristic elevators running up them.
I agree that the crates look out of place.
Keep the update rolling in!

Hey guys, i'm back again with another update. I agree with archangeltalon and oxyg3n that the crates look out of place, so I took them out and put a dumpster there for now, like archangeltalon suggested.. Thanks for the ideas! I'll be adding more clutter soon, I just want to finalize each of these buildings before I do that.. clutter will be the last thing on my list. Agasco, in that last render.. it wasnt z depth, it was just Open GL fog. I'll be back with another update soon, thanks for the encouraging words and the critiques!

Hey Rich
I think this is coming along. One thing has been bothering me though. The chains that are just hanging around near the large fans dont look like they have the right scale. They look to big to me. Maybe try to scale them down a little.
I like the little ropes you have under there and think that you could probably add a few more or maybe some other hoses or something.
Keep up the work!

sup Big R,
Good to see someone can do more than just a chick with big..... teeth, or some orc!
Looking good, but I really wondering having 4 big fans is too much?
Really seems to dominate the image too much. Maybe make the lower ones in to sewer outlets
with some valve control instead.
Also was good to see that part of your bridge on the left out of its place. Good man.
Maybe try and make things a lil more iregular...
I like the chains hanging down, but makes me wonder why they are there?
What if they were there tethering up some ol' hover barge, or ol'd school chinese boat thats hovering...?
Also the top of the left building doesn't quite look right the way it is now.
What if it was like on of the last small buildings around, where everything else is massive?
Like its the last of a small village, thats been swallowed up by these vast city?
If make it a hole in the wall of some massive building it self?
Take it or leave it, some idea's for ya
keep it up!'
oh yeah....
Thank you for not getting ahead of your self and be playing with shaders and textures on half done models!!! So many peopl do that, or will start posting HDRI renders with flash car-paint shaders they download before they've finished the first panel! WTF!
Enough of my ranting =) keep it up, I'll be watching this progress

Love it! Great idea! Why can't I come up with a similar project? :X
All I have to suggest now is to get some characters into it, to give it some life.

Hey guys.. I've been working on the left side of the scene primarily lately, building a loading dock and a garage area. I've been working adding little minutes details here and there that you might not be able to see in this render.. nuts, bolts etc.. Still moving right along.. I dont know where this is taking me..but I want to start adding more buildings soon so it starts to get the feel of a huge city area. Thanks again for the enchouraging words and ideas.. its greatly appreciated! I'll post again soon.
