hey everyone,

after hours of searching i'm finally giving up and asking. what i'm after is just some technique advice on how to achieve a shot i'm doing in terms of lighting. what i propose to do is animated a tree stump ripping open and as this happens a hole bunch of particles along with really bright rays of light emitting from within the tree stump (just think those rays you see in shrek when fiona and shrek turn back into their normal selves at the end). I'm hoping i wont have to use a 3rd party plugin(eg trapcode shine etc) and do it in post as i really need the control in maya so i can get the streaky effect look from the edges of the tree trunk and other debris i'll mix with it.

I'm wondering if its possible to achieve this effect using light fog and if not, is there anything else anyone would recommend trying?

cheers,
stace

I think Glow shader is much flexible to get the effects like light rays.
U need to control glow with a texture to limit the glow in stumps,Then increase star and noise attributes in shader glow.

Can you not use a volumetric light ? combined with your tree stump shattering, just do it as a pass.
