i'm working on an intro in After Effects 6 that will play on a 50" plasma screen. WHat composition setting do I use ? NTSC widescreen ? HDTV ? it's my first time creating something for TV. Also, what format should I export the video to play on the plasma ? thanks in advance :)

It depends where is the playback comming from dvd or a computer?

If itīs a dvd it have to follow those standards, NTCS wide or PAL wide.

If itīs going to play from a directly from a computer use the resulotion of the plasma if your computer and drive are fast enough for playback of that resulotion.
Otherwise you can use regular PAL wide or NTSC wide, or just half res of the monitor.

For good playback directly from computer you should use somekind of distrubution codec like divx, xvid, 3ivx, h264 or mpeg2.

If you going to play it from a dvd it have to be in mpeg2 for the dvd authoring application to accept it. Some authoring encode mpeg2 on there own if thats the case you just feed it with a uncompressed file, in for example quicktime animation codec.

I think this is an essential information which has to be provided by the client, so ask him about the resolution and playback device or where you can gather that information from in case the client doesn't know.

Yepp, exactly. It's of key importance to know what devices your client is going to use. If it's for a trade show, there is a good chance he might even have a provessional hard disk recorder which would allow you to use uncompressed or only mildly compressed stuff. As for the screen - they may look big, but most of them will only display standard resolutions such as PAL, NTSC and the HDTV resolutions. There's no magic to them in this respect.

it's for the company i work for, so it's for us :) we will connect a pc to this so what would be the best way to export ? do you recommend hooking up a dvd player instead ? this has to loop so i think pc would be better, no ?

What signal is required by this display?

the plasma hasn't come in yet, it's NTSC is that what you mean by signal ? we should have it tomorrow. I think it's best for me to do a quick 5 second with different formats to see what works best. thanks for the feedback everyone.

Just read your reply by now, so I'm sorry if it's already to late.
By signal I meant NTSC, PAL, VGA or DVI.

If the plasma display uses NTSC, then render in NTSC as usual. Regardless to the size of the display the NTSC resolution will stay the same, wether for a 5" or 50" display.
