I thought radiocity was supost to be faster than sitting for ten minutes a frame.

What are peoples methods to render a frame every 10 seconds ? or something fast that can hold lots of lighting deiatsil like gi or ao ?

Hi Youngcat!

There are several methods to speed up your rendering time. One is to make careful settings. Deaktivate features you donīt need, regulate maximun raytrace depht etc.

Then you can try to fake somthing like GI with using AO or skydomes.

Or you can try to bake some GI Results into textures which can be mapped and donīt have to be recalculated with every Frame.

Oh I forgot. GI Results can also be saved an recalled which saves also time. Depending on the software you use this can also be done view independend.

At last you can always let you setting like they are and choose a 1000CPU Renderfarm where your frame is sent into ;-) or Use some Special Hardware like PURE Cards or Gelato.

Well, if you can get radiosity or GI/Ambient Occlusion for 10 seconds a frame on one single computer, I think any studio in the world would hire you in a second.

I'd say the only option you'd have is to bake the radiosity/GI into the textures. I can't speak for other packages, but in 3ds max if you have a scene with no moving characters (only the camera moves through the space) you can process the radiosity once and use that solution throughout the animation. You can also bake the GI into the textures and then render without any lights on. Both of these options require quite a bit of preprocessing, though.

The other thing that slows down the rendering (in some cases more than the lighting) is the anti-aliasing...

eh ? ya mean Ao and that gi stuff is slow everywhere ? How do you people have patience to wait for test renders then final renders to find something screws up...

I guess it is just a ton of practice and painfull mistakes.. I have spent a lot of time running test renders and tricks and still cant get stuff working right enough for animations :banghead:

Oh well thankyou

I'm one of the impatient guys and barely never use GI, I'm quite satisfied with e-Light. Still far from 10 seconds a frame, but much faster than radiosity.
