View Full Version : A couple of Compositing tests..
SimonReeves 09-14-2005, 11:01 PM hello there, couldn't think of an exciting title I'm afraid for this..
but anyway here is a couple of wee compositing tests that I did in the summer with hdri I made, reactor and a still plate untill I get my hands on a dv cam :)
rendered in vray, seperate passes for diffuse+lighting / reflections/ caustics
heres a couple of clips from the mov's

Well....the caustics on the floor from the car are a bit much for my tastes....but otherwise....those tests look freaking awesome! Great job! Totally realistic :D

totally awesome! [plugged on the front page]
what is this doing on the frontpage???
ohh wait, its made by teh big reeves, np then..
Oh man.. That's better than real :( really nice job
How long was the render for each frame?
I hate mr

Good animation, Shaders and Iluminations so that in the first animation the reactor was missed.
I curious for rendertime per frame. You exported in .RPF or other format ?

poor car! It's so real I actually feel sorry for the car...!

Holy crap, thats frighteningly good!
The car doesnt look real enough though - the caustic reflections are a bit too strong for carpet, and the mass of it seems a bit too light for a die cast car. But as far as compositing goes, its outstanding - the colour correction, light bloom and even the blur is truly believable.
A really well deserved front page!

how does one learn such techniques?
where does one learn such techniques?
know any books? dvd's? or is it from school?
oh and for a carpeted floor, it sure reflects like marble or something unlike carpet...
everything else is hateful...
cos it's too pretty...

oh and for a carpeted floor, it sure reflects like marble or something unlike carpet...
The floor isn't reflective at all, but there's some strong caustics being casted on it, if that's what you mean.

Well, nice shaders and lighting.
Few things to consider: The caustics are a bit too much in the car scene, and also the bounciness and friction during the contact, suggests a more hard surface rather than the carpet floor you have as a background. Since you go for realism, you go for perfection right? ;)
Great job overal though

These look absolutely fantastic. You need to do a rendering tutorial.
The block simulation seems a bit loose to me. The blocks fall like they have a bit of helium inside. The gravity may have to be cranked up a bit. The ball bearings look fantasic in their movements alot of weight there.
The car one seems like its in slow motion. The collisions are fantastic.
Man, this is great stuff. This is practically photo real. On a rendering like this you really cant complain.

The animations are a little floaty at times, but the intergration is nicely done.

Looks great man!
I have one question for anyone that can answer. I see that with the cubes that at the begining of the animation they fall a tad. This happens to me all the time with reactor in 3d studio max. Is there a way to keep this from happening?
Jinian
09-15-2005, 02:28 AM
Very realistic stuff. You said you use a still plate, if so is it the rug? Cause you can completely achieve that detail and realism with just texturing. Also are the animation hand animated, or run using a plugin? Did you write any expressions to have the blocks auto animated?
captainchet
09-15-2005, 02:29 AM
Shadow545: you can simulate a few frames and let the blocks "settle" i think that'd work.
Jozvex
09-15-2005, 02:35 AM
I can't answer in Reactor/Max terminology, but usually you can do one of two things:
1. Use something called preroll, that makes them do the 'settle' part of the simulation at frames before frame 0.
2. Once you've done the settle part of the sim, bake that state/position as the starting point for the sim.
Great work original poster! I agree about the caustics being too strong, and both sims being slightly too slow.

Those are really cool. I've been experimenting with shooting my own HDR lately and I was wondering how you are capturing them? I've been using a 3" chrome ball bearing, but it isn't that great for reflections.
Great work though. Can you post some examples of the render passes?
WOW man!! gr8 job on lighting and compositing .it looks so realistic.
BTW can u do it same with mental ray?:bounce:
i also would like to do some test like this.man u r inspiring me a lot.
also one question ..how did u do color correction in combustion?(did u do anything?)
just impressive.

From an animation stand point, the car seems to land a wee bit soft on the inital impact. My brain wants the front right tire (from the car's perspective), to kick up more. The following bounce has a great feel and the ball hitting it is fantastic. Other than that, the blocks could speed up a bit more on their falls. Just seems a bit airy.
Really dude, this is looking phenomenal. Really gorgeous tests.

Holy crap thats amazing... I remember when crappy raytracing from almost ten years ago impressed me, when I first saw 3D, even crappy games like duke nukem 3d were impressing feats....and then when Brazil R/S came about, and so on and so forth.. but man... have we gone a long way...
Amazing.

Pretty nice, would look more real if you make the animation a bit faster. Now it just reminds me reactor work with too low time scale :)
Stunning rendering though.

i don't know what this is for but ... u have the gift! i always liked detailed and sophisticated study of nature/reality. this one is almost perfect.
*why almost? well, i can see two of the three spheres resting in the reflections of the blocks, then suddenly speed up from magic hands... lol, it's not the render and comp work, sometimes people just forget the simple things.

hey guys, thanks for your kind comments :) as these were test things I'll try and be helpful with replying to questions and that
but in general I could have spent that bit extra time to tidy everything up [tyre materials caustics flickering/amount dynamics speed/weight/friction] but I just used reactor to test the lighting really :)
I think it took about 20hours to render the diffuse/gi pass on a couple of machines, motion blur was quite expensive, the reflection/spec/caustics were all relatively quick, but reflections needed more sample for the motion blur
I probably did use RPF's so the Z depth was there incase I wanted to do some dof post, but I didn't in the end I think [or post motion blur]
Also just want to agree with what a couple of people said about the start of the simulation, would just cut off the first frames as the blocks settle normally, but I quite like the way they do so I kept it in as it was just a test :)
Also I used this program to make the HDR, as it was indoors I could keep the cam plugged into the pc to take the shots automates some of the work and stops you needing to touch the camera so it doesnt move etc, and did a good a job as I normally get doing it manually
http://www2.cs.uh.edu/~somalley/hdri_images.html
I'll try and post some more random shots of differnt passes/pre post work and that
also here is a hdr/real chrome ball comparison so you can see the hdr clearly :)

hi there,
i love such stuff. It looks so real, very great job.
Is there any chance for me to get the Sourcepictures, maybe you can send them by personalMessage because i'd really like to test around. I didnt read all the Threads so im not sure if another one already asked and you dont give them out.
oh, and of course 5 Stars from me too. :)

awesome! Some people didn't like the caustics on the floor, but I thought it all looks great! My only comment might be that the car seesm to take a long time to fall(?), but it is so beautifull, who cares?

Overall, excellent work here - other then the slight hop of the blocks at the very beginning which may have been mentioned already. The objects look very real and are superimposed well. I do agree with someone that there may be slightly too much caustics on the car movie, but still it is very realistic looking results.
Excellent stuff Simon!
I agree with many people who've already posted, aside from the slightly OTT caustics (for carpet) you've got the look of the objects/scene spot on, it just suffers from that classic 'slow' Reactor simulation feeling.

Hi
Well if could give u 6 starts i would . Amazing job.
I have only two things though, and caustics have been mentioned i think ,the wheels on the car are floating, there is no bar to connect them. I dunno why but it really bugs me (sorry i'm a modeler). Everything looks amazing as i said!

09-16-2005, 03:21 PM
Very impressive as always Simon! Two small areas that I feel need addressing - the wheels on the car should rotate a little when it's on its roof - even if the physics simulation doesn't do it, it would just make for more visual interest. Also the caustics on the carpet are too focused - carpet has an extremely diffused and bumped surface because of the threads it's made from - the caustics need to be blurred and broken up by this, because they give the impression of caustics on a polished surface instead of a rough carpet. Also the intensity of them is very strong - remember that you will only get very strong focused intense caustics on a very smooth surface - a rough surface will absorb and scatter more of the light, leading to a blurrier, less intense effect.
Bloody good work though:)

Amazing work!!
A quick question about the HDRI. I take it, that its not a spherical HDR given that you said you didnt move the camera?
I fit is a spherical HDR how was it done?
I am keen to get into making my own HDR's, an you seem to have done a pretty good job with this one.
Oh and the caustics are they purely created via the HDRI lighting? or did you setup specific lights to create the caustics?
They seem quite accurate albiet a little strong and i didnt think that was quite possible with just HDR lighting.

the tests look fantastic! the caustics/lighting/renders are great! the only thing that i would object to is that there doesn't seem to be enough gravity apparent. Like things seem to be falling too slowly. But other than that. I see no flaws.
way to go!:bounce:

Looks awsome, and many people have said that the physics arn't so convincing, but after watching it through alot of times in slow mo and fram by frame i have come to a conclusion.
You used real car physics on a scaled model of one ;)

overall good but some things really bother me. the car animation (or sim) looks slow motion and floaty almost as if you intended it? i dunno. the caustics of course as everyone said. the roughness of the carpet should be breaking this up way more than it is already (oren nayar shader that works with caustics maybe could be used). the cubes simulation has a pop as the sim kicks in. render more frames and cut that off. then it would be crazy good.

There dosn't seam to be enough friction on the carpet. The car looks like it slides way to smooth on the surface.
compositing and render looks absolutely fantastic.
