i have this obvious script:

SelectEdgeRing; polySplitRing -ch on -weight 0.5 -absoluteWeight 0 -smoothingAngle 0 ;

how can i modify this script so that if one edge is selected it will do what the script above does (by selecting the edge ring then splitting it) and if multiple edges were selected it would execute by selecting the edge ring and splitting those rings down the middle.
please help.

sorry to bug you again or if anyone else know that if there's anyway to have it so that once you do a split the new edge ring you just created remain selected?
