I am trying to make a bat, as in the animal, and i want the light to shine through the wings and ears showing off the veins and arteries in them. i am trying to use the SSS shaders that ship with mental ray in max 7, but i cannot seem to get them to work right. The light doesn't pass through the mesh. i know that it is possible to make a true SSS shader now, i have seen it on so many of the finished products you all do. my question is, how do i get it done. i am planning on eventually putting hair and everything, but i'm tryin to get this part done first.

so how do i get the SSS shader to transmit light through the mesh?

its your material multi-sub object? as far as i know, the MR SSS shaders dont work with multi-sub object materials yet. also, the SSS shaders that ship with Max are dependant on scale. if your bat is 200 max units wide, then it has a wingspan of around 5 meters, and will really make it difficult to get a good result with SSS. also, a quick search of the forums led me to this. good tutorial in here.
