I have this scene that I've been playing around with while being compared to the new C4d over on their boards. I took the OBJ file that everyone was using and thought I'd get Vray fired up and see what I could do.

I only used one Vray light source at the window. But as you can see, the "shadows" are very blotchy where they are soft going from the dark into the light. How can I improve this? I upped the Irradiance Maps built in pre-sets to "very high" and I still get this.

Ah, RTFM and you'll find the answers...I think it has to do with the VrayLight subdivisions. I'll try to rerender it and see what I come up with.

Up the Vray light samples. I usually use 24. You can also up the global subdivisions, and sometimes even lower the noise threshhold. It seems to me there are no one hit solutions. I usually tweek each scene a little differently. Good luck !
