This is kinda my first post. I am doing a character for a "stylized cartoon" modeling reel that I am creating. I plan on animating the character. He will be jump into the scene naked and the armor will gravitate to his body. I want the armor to be ridiculously big on him. Anyhow... crits. on how to make him more effective as a toon or in general would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Posting your concept and wireframes would help with this a great deal. I'm not sold on the sandles, being bare foot with all the aromor on seems a bit off, especially since they dont wear those in battle do they?
I say work with the horns on the helmet a bit more, size and shape wise, post some variations... and flags on his back would be cool, like the feathers on the guy in Animatrix. Make him all the mroe ridiculously big.
Also, give him some pupils, just toss them in to give off a better feel for the character, because they can make a huge difference with size and palcement and right now he looks like a zombie.
Work on a proxy pose for his end turn-around pose as well, really helps with know how you're armor should work for what you're going for.
LASTLY, I think hsi ribcage seems a bit smushed on the X-axis. Not the outer part but where the abs rest.. just a bit more breathing space and you're gold.
Keep us updated on this, stoked to see how it turns out.

i really like the look of the naked dood, nice curves on the arms and legs, i do agree with the ribcage looks a bit off, maybe look at some more refferences.
i think u can explore more with the armour, and i say no flags, but feathers on the back :P

I'm actually a huge fan of ur design - i love the stylised look youve given him. For a stylised cartoon modelling reel he should fit in perfectly. Well done
edit: i aggree with moos comments about the feet though,I dont have a clue what samurai actually wore, but it does look a bit silly with no shoes on.
Also, instead of having the armour gravitate towards him, have you thought about doing it the other way around. I think you could acheive something quite comical having the armour fall off him piece by piece revealing this huge samurai is quite skinny.
sloggo, that's a wicked idea about the reverse with the aromor, but Im curious how you think that could work with a turn around? Have him jump out full armor, action pose, turn around, stop, all the aromor falls off, he has a look of embarassment? Could be killer... damnit they both sound good, its like trying to choose which of your children NOT to kill... bad analogy.

The lower part of the body is actually the MOST untouched part of the model. Currently there are no straps connecting the wooden slippers to his feet. I was planning on having booties with straps that tied up the slippers to his feet and his lower legs. I know that the samurai did not actually wair these in battle, but I thought it would look ridiculous and funny.
As for the armor flying OFF of his body instead of onto... That was actually a concept I was toying around with for a very long time. I thought of animating him "powering" up, flexing and then the armor would just blow off him. I probably could go either way. I dunno. As for now, I need to really finish the armor. I am still debating how far I should detail the model.

Model is looking good. I think you should figure out how you want the armor to be strapped onto his body. Some of the line flow on his face looks like it needs reworking if you are gonna animate him.

Here is a new update on my samurai guy. Most of the changes have been made to the lower half of the armor as well as line flow on his body. Let me know what you guys think. =)

the armor is to repetetive, its also pretty basic but that may be a style choice.

I have to say that i love this character. They style is wonderfull and i think you did a great job with the modeling. My only crit is that the ears could use some work, but like you said, you dont know how detailed you want to go with this guy. In that case you might want to make em a bit more toony. I cant wait to see this guy textured and animated. Ill be keeping my eye peeled!

Its been a while, but here is an update on the Samurai! The rig still needs some work. Now I gotta work out the armor flying onto his body. =D
