Whoa!!!
one of the best muscle definition i ever saw on a model , very , very nice!
But if you plan on making him an archer , maybe he should be a little thinner , that's how elves are after all. Of course that is totaly up to you , the model just rocks!

I like him I think it's great. So he's a tough elf. Why does he have to be like every other elf and be skinny. I think its very unique as an elf because he's not skinny and slender. I wouldn't make him skinny, I think he look great.

heh guys you mixed up the species, Manfred indicated that this guy is a Drow not an surface elf,he's not nice and surelly not very skinny, looks like Zaknafein or Dinin to me
If you make the equipment with such grace as the body, than the Mithril Hall is your for the taking :p Good job me'lad :)

What's the damn point in calling it an elf if it doesn't have elf features?
Looks more like a Vulcan than an Elf.

Joril: This guy is from an evil tribe. They are darkelfs, not like ordinary woodelfs. These are evil. This particullar one has his muscles because he is a warrior, he is not an archer, he do close combat with sword or other close combat weapons. He also needs his muscles to carry the heavy armor im going to give him.
Thanks anyways for replying.

Why copy every other elf thats been created? ever heard of ORIGINALITY? Since when has blizzard and weta had a monolpoly on elven design? in fact, in the lord of the rings book it doesn't even mention elves having pointy ears and elves were over 6 feet tall. In recent fantasy worlds like the Forgotten Realms elves grow to a maximum height of 5'4. And in viking times they believed elves had wings. So tell me why can't his elf workout and be a little bit stronger than all the other elves?
I am very surprised that more people have not responded to this. It looks like you spent a lot of time on it and thus far it looks great.
I'm sorry but I don't remember elves being this bulky. They're more of a slender ~ flowing curves type of creature. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I love that people are arguing on how elves look. I mean, sheesh, last time I was in Ireland I spoke to some leprechauns who showed me to the enchanted forest. Now the bus fare was kinda expensive but let me tell ya, tons of elves were there. We partied hard there and I met tons of them, great guys and gals the lot of them.
Ok, I just had to do that...the insanity of people claiming that "this" is what an elf looks like is silly as there are no elves, people! They are a mythical being up to interpretation.
I think he looks pretty thin to me, granted highly defined and muscled but still he isn't some comic style brick or lead man. I do think he needs some more lines above his brow for when he scowls at the surface elves and the arms to me seem too long. But then again, maybe drow elves in his mind have longer arms than I think they should.
Anyways, don't mean to ruffle anyones feathers, 'cause I'm sure someone is going to twist in their seat. I just had to write about the silliness of it all.

My point exactly!!!! An elf is whatever you want it to be.
This thread does sound nerdy doesn't it.

hey manfred, nice work.
ignore people arguing about what the hell an elf looks like... they are going by traditional drawings for childrens fairy tails. who knows what an elf would look like if they ever exist.
all I am going to say is that the modelling is damn nice.

hey Sir_Manfred
pretty cool work so far. My only input on the subject would be to keep on going the way you are going. In the end, do a spectacular render and everyone will take notice of *your* rendition of an elf :)
btw, I'd work some more on the forearms. his biceps/triceps/elbows are look good.

I think you're probably working your way down, but you didn't mention it, so I think the legs need work in relation to the rest of the model that we can see, which looks fantastic.

nice work.. here's where i see some error:
the back muscles, while very niceley done, have some sharp edges which should be smoothed out.
the sides of the torso, where the ribs are, are usualy alot less bumpy & more strait lined when looked at from the front or side.
hope this helps.

hi , i am semi new to modeling but i have gotten the hang of it this past few months, but something i dont understand about your model
you have 2 polygons connected to 1 polygon, as in you have 5 point polygons that look perfect connected to 4 point polygons and im not sure how youd id it and was wondering if there is some specila trick to it
http://www.purgatory.net/joe/question.jpg
blocks 1 and 2 are connected to 3, this NEVER works for me, you must reveale your secret:D
btw i use lightwave i hope u can do it in lightwave:P it would help me out so much
SirManfred
11-12-2002, 11:01 PM
Titan: Hey, man! Good to see you on this forum :)
Gkaine: I use 3dsmax. Ever since max4 there have been a modeling thingy called "Editable Poly". Its not like the ordinary mesh since the Editable Mesh can only have 3 points polygons. However the Editable Poly has no limits (at least i dont think so). That means that polygons in Editable Poly can have more than 3 points in each polygon. So i dont really know how to achieve this in Lightwave but there might be a trick or something.

Ok then... a lil' update over here :)
I have been working on the legs and i also gave him a pair of feet.
I think i have to work more on the leg muscle area.
Ignore the groin area, he will having armor and clothing covering those parts so i didn't make any details there.
Enjoy :)

Hello,
this is damn good model. I like details on face, it's be a pleasure to animate him. I like the muscles on body soo, but may give some crits to wrists (bones & musc.) and foots, in this area:

Wow, relly nice work, Sir_Manfred. That's (almost)perfect Drow model. But I want to see what armor and weapons will you make him. So, keep doing it
bcole23
11-13-2002, 07:56 PM
Very nice model.
If he's a close combat warrior then put some thought into what type of weapon this guy would use. Huge muscles indicate a heavy weapon, and as the drow live underground and must fight in tight spaces, you must take that into account. For this I'd guess he'd use an axe, not really a common drow weapon, or a hammer, which is what I'd go with. However, a nice heavy sword would do nicely too.
One thing I would do is make his forearm muscles VERY defined. Someone who wields a weapon will have forearm muscles that are really cut.
To my mind, if you're going more for a Drizzt character, then you've got his proportions all wrong. I remember reading though, that there are this type of drow, however they are few and far between.
The kind of debate in this thread comes from a lack of backstory or character development prior to modeling. Not saying you haven't done it, but we don't know. Fill us in on the witherfores and whytoos about this guy.
Oh yeah, and as an underground creature, bigger eyes are the norm, take for instance Gollum.
Just my thoughts.
From a technical standpoint, it looks great and once you map him, he'll look wonderful.
Eclipse
11-13-2002, 08:26 PM
Hmmm, bcole23, I think this Drow's muscles aren't huge, but just good-shaped. And an elf(even dark)wearing an axe... All kind of elves are masters in using longsword and bows and some types of magic. Concerning to the bigger eyes-every elf has the "Infravision" ability and The Dark Elves has it, but much stronger than the normal(surface)elves. And he lives underground, yes, but he mustn't fight in tight places. The Dark Elves has created huge corridors and huger galleries(I mean RELLY huge). If you're interested in in this or other fantastic races or creatures, bcole23, you could learn more about ib by reading some D&D or AD&D DungenonMaster Creature Guide :bounce:

All the things I 'know' of drow elves is from the excellent Forgotten Realms, "Dark Elf Trilogy". But like I said, there's really nothing wrong with this and I think it's quite excellent. I guess my whole point was just some of the info I knew of drow elves and that backstory really helps to flesh out characters.

Ok, no prob. I like the Forgotten Realms too, but it's not the only literature(and games :)) to obtain information from ;)

my beef is with the ears. they are a bit thin, and narrow. and lacking in detail.
also maybe some cranial bumps (i dont know the scientific term) along the sides of the forehead. Its just a little to perfect.
everything else looks great. good job!

Great helm, no doubt. But the shoulder armor piece looks unfitting. I think you must do it to look like the helm. However, the most of the heroes in these fantastic worlds are wearing armor sets(helms, armors, gloves, boots etc. of same tipe and sometimes name(Sir Manfred's Valor for example:))) Just make it more sharp and engraved like the helm, that's it
Also I think that his skin must be a bit darker. The Drow has almost black skin with little blue spice(their black skin and pale hair are a curse for their allegiance with the spider goddess, Lolth). But I still think it's great model :D

I love your model. I think it looks great. I have a few minor suggestions however. Maybe you could pull his cheek bones in just a bit. that would help the drow look. Also to add some character maybe you could add a scar on his eye or face. These are just suggestions and I am by no means an expert. I love the work you've done so far. Especially your helmet.

If this is supposed to be a drow, parhapps he should be black skinned? and they have red glowing eyes as well, because they have infravision, and add white hair as well, but i guess you planned to do that later?
There are big Drows, but they are not common, there is many different fighting styles in drow society. and some use 2-hander weapons, but as mentioned above, they are few.
Parhapps you could work on to make a adamantite Plate armor or chainmail :) if you have the time
Anyway, i think it looks great so far,

its pretty good, I would agree that it needs (maybe) a little less muscular tonage, but my main concern is that your big toes point straight out maybe even away from the other toes, look at your foot, it doesn't do that... it points towards the other toes... not to shabby though
