R8 has this great function where if you Shift + RClick (Control MB in Mac?) in the editor window you get a list of objects that are under the cursor. You can then pick the object from the list you want selected. But that's not the tip!

If it's a complex scene, it might still be hard to find the selected object in the Object Manager. Here's the tip: in the OM's Object menu, click on "Search First Active Object". Then the OM will automatically scroll down to the selected object.

What's sort of funny is that this function was also present in R7, but I never used it. It's not very useful in R7 because it's almost always easier to select an object in the OM rather than trying to fiddle around in the editor to pick an object.

for those super lazy folk like me you can also get that little list by double right-mouse button clicking.

Yes I'm to lazy to push shift if i don't need it for a short cut.

I also hardly ever use it until now although I know it. R8 may be different.
BTW, do you know the following ways of traveling through hierarchy on the Object manager?
- basically you can move up and down with pressing the up and down arrow keys in your keyboard.
- when a closed parent object is selected, you can open it with the right arrow key.
- when an opened parent is selected, you can close it with the left arrow key.
So selection can freely travel on the OM while opening or closing any hierarchy.;)
