Ok I installed the new Itunes5 that comes quicktime 7 with it and after some hours getting nuts with AE crashing, I discovered that the version of quicktime (7.0.2) was making my AE 6.5 crash every time I tried to open something or dragging drop something. So I uninstalled it and everything was ok again!

How strange! I've both After Effects 6.5 and QuickTime 7.0.2 both running on my machine, and I've not experienced any problems. I've been using them both quite a lot at the moment.

What spec machine are you running them on?

It is a P4 3.0ghz 2gb ram and a nvidia 5500 256mb. My pc had worked around the clock the last 6 months doing a lot of different projects, maybe my machine needs a fresh reinstall of OS. But I'm pretty sure that quicktime 7.0.2 messed up my AE 6.5 Pro bundle because after I installed it my AE began to crash and as soon as I uninstalled the quicktimne everything was ok again.

Did you installed your version of quicktime that comes with Itunes 5 or is it a stand alone install file?

I installed the version which originally came with my operating system - Mac OS X 10.4.
I understand that the PC version of QuickTime 7 is still in beta, which could explain the problems.

yeah, so I know this thread is a bit old but....

I've been having this same problem with my After Effects 6.0 (legit too!). Anytime after I installed quicktime 7+ using the stand alone or itunes, it just wouldn't be able to open any projects. I tried to uninstall and reinstall AE after the QT installation and got the same thing. My solution was to not install QT 7, easy enough. But now I absolutely need the H.264 codec. Has anyone found a work around. There is no way I can afford an upgrade right now.

Help! Thanks in advance.

I'm on Windows XP Pro SP2
Athlon64 x2 Dual 3800+
2.01 GHz, 2.00 GB Ram
Nvidia Quadro FX 1400 (dual monitors)

Hi, I am the thread starter. I think installing the update of After Effects 6 to 6.5.1 will do it. At the time, since my system was a mess, I did a clean up and installed everything from scratch (formating, installing windows xp, and so on...). But what I really think solved the problem was that I installed the update of After Effects 6.5.1. Now everyhing is working with the newest version of quicktime and Itunes ;-)

If that doesn't work, you still can get back to the prior version of Quicktime, the version 6. That works 100% sure.

AE6.5.1 and Quicktime 7.03 seemed to fix all the problems with me.

Yeah, but like I said, I'm using AE6.0. Any help out there with this version? Can't afford the upgrade right now.

Thanks.

try uninstalling itunes and quicktime 7 and install the quicktime 6 standalone. That shall work.

Yeah, Ralphgmr, but quicktime 6.0 won't have codec H.264 and there is no way to install it as a stand alone codec. So again, the problem is that I NEED codec H.264 but also wish to run After Effects 6.0. Do you see why I'm asking about this now?

Thanks.

h.264 is a standard like mpeg 1, 2, 4, not an Apple only thing. Try one of the free h.264 codecs:

Thanks for the help Beaker,

I realize that H.264 is not just an Apple thing, but Microsoft is not supporting it and going with another codec as it's direct competetor. The problem is that I need to view Quicktime movies encoded in H.264, which shouldn't be a problem, since the free Quicktime player supports this codec. But the latest quicktime crashes After Effects 6.0. So what I need is an H.264 codec that works in QT 6.5 (not very likely) or an idea how to get AE 6.0 to work without crashing when it is installed on my machine. I got a promising tip to edit my AE prefs to set Quicktime as not the program to use for .wav's, but that didnt' fix it. But I'm looking for some tech solution along that vein.

I gave that first link (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/x264_Video_Codec.htm) a shot already. I couldn't see any video encoded using the QT H.264 codec. It only appeared as a white screen. I could hear the audio though.

I hadn't found (http://developers.videolan.org/x264.html) But, sadly, I installed their version and go the exact same result as the above codec.

The third link says that "The CoreAVC decoder/encoder is released under a Closed Source License and is available to third parties that wish to license it." and has no available link for a download that I was able to find. Did you download one from there?

And the fourth link is actually a students thesis or some such. Not any help with a H.264 codec that works in the windows environment on QT 6.5 or earlier.

I'm assuming that you have first hand experience installing these codecs on your computer. Can you please tell me if I'm doing something incorrectly or which ones worked with Quicktime for you?

Thanks,

Todd
