well, after some weeks I've made my entry I finally got an idea. In fact, is an exaggeration of a true story that happened to me and my brother this year.
I'll start making some sketches now :P

The first composition sketch.
the image is about the banishment of the two Spanish Gypsy (and their dog) that tryed to camp at the small old town of Castelãos.

That's kind of cool. Maybe you could try cropping in closer and packing the mob together tighter, to show that they're getting swarmed. Best of luck.

Ok, I'm thiking about the values now.
I've done the drawing again. some figures are not correct yet and maybe I should add more characters.
the background is based on a picture I've took of the the Vatican this year.
I think I'll start colouring from this one now.
what do you think of everything?
I need some comments! :P

I think its a little bit random.. Theres something happening over there, something there and there.. There is nothing for the eye to focus on. Its a nice sketch, maybe try a different angle..

I've changed the composition again. Maybe now it needs more elements.

I'm now rendering the guards clothes and will start rendering the Hummer (it's not a Hummer anymore, but I don't know what else to call it :P)
oh, and I made the elements a little bigger too.
some critics and comments are still appreciated :)

hmm, i don't know exactly where you're going with it, and i don't know if i "get" the idea completely, but i say run, dude, run with it.
Hmmm. You know what, though? i'd like to see more of the pope. He's a bizarre funny looking sith lord of a man. and it would be hella funny to see "mais presença, se é que tu me entendje". But that's me.
As for my challenge. is there, sorta whispering in my ear while flashes of gore runs through my mind because of my latest project.
life goes on and on and on and on... :D

damn. I think I won't be able to make it!
anyways I'm back to the contest.
still painting and changing the composition. I'm focusing in painting now.
my computer is not taking the full resolution of the image (10000x6810px) so I think I'll size it down a little bit.
ok, everybody is about to finish their images and I'm not even close to it...
looking again I think the first sketch has some moviment I'm losing here.
I'd really appreciate some critics on this though :)

Added some Fx and kept the rendering.
I'm thinking in cropping the scene to an wide-sized canvas.

muito bom os efeitos especiais. that explosion looks wicked, though i'm not sure that it would cast a yellow light over the hummer and etcs. I'm not sure what kind of shadows it wouldd cast either, if any, since this is happening during the day... Have you tried playing with different lighting? (morning, noon, evening...). The debris falling in the sky are great. Would there be anything on the ground as well? I don't know the ground is too clean. hehhe.

I personally don't fancy much the security agents - possibly the way they are arranged and their moves. i don't know. I don't like them as much as the men in the funny costumes. One of the security agents, the one screaming, his hands are nice, but he looks like his head is tilted too far back, hahahah.

I think the widescreen thing could be interesting, that's a good idea, i don't know, give it a try.

Are those parachutes falling in the sky?? AWESOME. They could look more like parachutes, i think, maybe more of an aerial perspective. What do you think of actually seeing one of the guys with parachutes over the right side, looking like he just landed.

It'd be nice like to see more refined detail in the structure in the back. The coolest thing in your comp. is the explosion in the back and the folding texture on that funny man in the first plane. It'd be nice to see at least the same level of care throughout the rest of the illustration. For example, despite the fact you're using a warm palette over the left side of the composition, the right side looks tooooo cold, and boring. there's nothing to see there - know what i mean? it's like it's not that "the point of interest is over the left side of the comp.", like it should be, but it's more like, "i rather avoid looking at this part (right side) of this drawing".

anyways, that's my opinion, i'll shut the fu up. :) . other that that, great job. Every day i realize how hard this is. I get a whoop-ass everytime i try to color with photoshop and painter. XD

Hi Diego,

Thanks for your commentsJ I had a chance to look at the work you’ve done so far and it looks like you’ve definitely put a lot of time and effort into your piece. I think your initial sketch was very strong and extremely dynamic. I feel you had a solid foundation with it to start from but there are certain elements that got lost along the way as you progressed toward your final image.

I like how you had characters in the immediate foreground of your first sketch. They served a critical purpose of allowing the viewer eye’s to follow the action into the scene. The current image, as stated by FrozZT, does seem a bit random and from a viewer’s standpoint, I feel I really don’t know what is going on. If I hadn’t read your thread, I don’t think I would have been able to differentiate between who is defending the pope and who is attacking him.

Although I don’t feel your current layout is as strong as your first sketch, I do like that you added the explosion. It helped fill up some of the empty space and also helps let the viewer know that something extremely critical is happening while placing emphasis on the intensity of the situation.

I know it is getting closer toward the end of the challenge but just stick with it. You have done plenty of work up until this point and it would be a shame not to follow through. Besides, I think every one of us has things about our work that we wish we had more time to fix. I don’t feel you are that far off from a completed illustration and with a little time set aside in the next few days, you should be able to complete it. I've decided getting back my 1st layout. I think this is more balanced and leaves some more possibilities of elements, although I think it's still "a bit random" as it was said before.
Some other changes are kinda obvious :P
made the pope "holy", people running and getting caught by the explosion, etc... I'll add some more of these.
it's fun to paint little characters :)

I almost getting to the end of it!!!
lots of stuff added. smoke, texture, better cloud rendering, enhanced fx, background characters...
I'll keep adding some more texture to the background, and there still some blood missing :P

there are still almost the same things left, but I worked more on the face of the guard on the foreground and the shape of the backgorund.
I really thanks to the few people who help me (and is still helping) on the development of my painting.
This is something very important to me.

The Vatican is being attacked by unknown agents!
The Swiss Guard, the official Vatican protectors, are now having to use all its millitary training on the duty to save the Pope.
No one ever realized that those funny guards with such weird outfits could ever be so skillful warriors!

[with movie trailer's narrator voice] Now, the world will think twice on laughing at them again.
