Perhaps you know the short-story, that's behind my concept.
It is "The Foghorn" by Ray Bradbury and in short words it is the story of some kind of seabeast
from deep down the sea, perhaps the last of his species, being lonely for many thousand of years and he hears the sound
of a foghorn. A voice like his own voice. And he comes to look for this lighthouse with the foghorn, may be it's a compagnion.
The monster cried out at the tower. The foghorn blew. The monster roared again...
I wish all participants the best luck and fun and I hope
that I'm able to bring my concept to a reasonable picture...

And yes, I'm already afraid of the water, all water I made before was in a glass... so I'm only sure of one thing: I will learn a lot and I need all help I can get!
So to calm myself, I will begin modeling the lighthouse - a quite save terrain.

First part of modeling comes nicely... about the monster... difficult to model it ? yes and no... the final quality of your picture really depend of the moond you build around your elements, mood, lights, effects and so... the compositing. Finally, when you think to these details, this monster is nothing than a detail of your scene :scream: good continuation

Sweet work... and beautiful see... just a thought about the lighthouse... if you keep this framing, maybe there will be judicious to force the perspective view by putting right more the lighthouse, a little with the manner of the monuments of ancient Greece.
If you keep like that, you risk to close the vision... but for sure, also depend of the other elements...

It's coming along neatly, but I think you got better contrast in the concept sketch; now you've got a bit of a grey-ish lighthouse, making the image low on contrast and (for me) less exciting.
Still, .. sea monster! I'll look forward to it.

Very nice concept, scene looks awesome already:thumbsup: Maybe you can cutdown the fog by 10to15%, it will add more contrast to the scene as suggested by The parrot Just a suggestion:) dont worry too much about the fog rightnow, it also depends on how are you going to light up your scene. Light house looks great.

Hi daWinky. I like your concept. Just one thing. I think you need another light from the left side from your picture. The Tower looks for me a little bit plane. Don't looks the Tower really like a 3D. Just put a little more contrast. In my opinion .

Yap, I read this story too. Very sad one, I'd say. Srange, but it's the only story of Ray Bradbury I liked. And even stranger, image similar to yours was on the cover of the book, maybe artist had the same oppinion.
Anyway I gonna keep an eye on this thread. I'm very interrested. For now I like everything I see here. I really hope you'll be one of the finalists.

I googled befor drawing my concept and found just one illustrated edition that I didn't like. Also quite different to mine. Of course I didn't looked in russian bookshops... !
I still have to make up my mind, if the monster is more pure fantasy, dragonlike, or if I try to base it on real animals, like sea serpents or dinosaurs. Recently I prefer the sea serpent version... we will see.

Unfortunately I can't give you a link. I read this book very long time ago. Sorry mate.
What about the design of monster, I'd say that it should look as realistic as possible. I don't think that U need som fantasy elements here. Well, it's just my opinion. And I think, that sea serpent is optimal option.
And I also think that the best idea for your image is to consentrate attention on atmosphere itself. Otherwise there is a danger that all attention will be attracted by monster, while all over elements has the same value for the image.
Terrible sorry for my english.

@ all: Glad that you like it! :bounce:
@ Lemog:
I have to admit that I had no special animal as a model for my creature -so I don't know if it looks like a Plesausio...whatever. The main thing is, that you like it! :)
I wanted to make something that is obviously living in the sea, strange but not to fantastic and very important for me: on one hand is has to look large and frightening, on the other hand I want it to look confused and lonely.
So we will see how it fits in the scene...
@ Obi: Yes, textures and materials will be important and still a lot of work. But for my creature I have a quite clear idea of the material - I want to give it a shiny, wet look and show it is an organic part of the ocean...the other question is to create this material...
@ suk-grigorij: I'm happy that you read the story and have the same idea of the monster:) . The question of the similar shape is a good point. I already thought of that by putting the lighthouse on this little round island - similar to the thicker part of the creatures corpus. And that they both have a long "neck" must be enough because I need this pose of the creature...And I think that especially the similar voice - the foghorn - is the main attraction for the creature.
Again thank's to all of you for the motivation and the feedback!

I promised to show soon the creature in the scene, so here are 3 possible perspectives.

I don't like how the creature is having to face backwards in the first one - although compositionally, it is the most effective. It fills the space the best of the 3. In the other two, the monster is too small so we can't see its details and the giant gap between the two objects makes the picture dull and flat. So I would take the first one but reposition the animal so that it is facing the tower like it is in the 3rd one. Hope that helps. I would also make this scene moonlit with the lighthouse light illuminating the creature as well as the moonlight. It would make it more dramatic that way and the lighting would be much more interesting. Just a thought.

Hello daWinky, thank you for your comment on my thread, and I'm sorry for not coming to yours sonner, I can see that I really should, you have a beautiful concept and your work is going great.
I agree with the comments of gardogg... and I don't know if you're going to like my suggestion or not, but... I felt that your monster is kind of young, like a child! So... what if he was playing with the lighthouse?... well, not exactly with the lighthouse, but with the light that comes out from there?
Imagine that he comes out from the water every night to play with light... to "eat" the light... he opens his BIG mouth and enjoys to see himself iluminated every time the light passes by him.
I don't know... it's just an idea... That's what I felt. :) Thanks.

You certainly have your work cut out for you. I like the lighthouse and the fog - I think you've done a great job capturing the mood there. I would certainly opt for the lighthouse and creature to be background/foreground, since having them at the same distance removes depth and makes the composition weaker. I prefer the lighthouse distant + creature close, but it ultimately depends on what your creature looks like.
daWinky
09-23-2005, 11:13 PM
@ garddog: Thank's for your reply:) . Of course the light will be another and there will be fog and the lighthouse illumination and so on. As I said this is just an early wip to here some opinions about the perspective. And if it seems, that creature is not facing the lighthouse I've made a mistake: this should be so in every version. I will take care of this point!:hmm:
@ claudio_jordao: Thank's:) ! What you said is very interesting, because I think you haven't read of my initial idea and what I want to show. If you see that there is a kind of communication between the lighthouse and the creature, then I think the picture works in a particular way...Thinking the creature is young is not so good for me and tells me that there is still a lot of work to do... (and only 70 days left:rolleyes: )!

I like the first camera angle, cause we can see both lighthouse and the sea creature, but for the creature's pose I like the third image, it really looks good the way his tail is coming up on the left side, only thing is if you can rotate the head little bit so that his eyes and jaws will be properly scene and will add more dramma to your final composition, just a suggestion:)
Otherwise every thing looks cool to me, very nice progress

Hi Sabrina, cool work on water and on the monster. I tend to prefer the setup of the first one as it's putting more depth in the picture with a foreground element. But I find disturbing the 'V' shape the neck is forming with the tail. You probably can improve this aspect of your posing.

@ gpepper, madshooter, jaba153, Roman, Digital_Rebellion, belseth, Nakary, coCoKNight:
Thank's for your support and the nice words!
Well, I think there are quite different opinions about the versions, except that most of you agreed that it is not looking so spectacular yet...
I have to admit that I agree with this myself. I'm not really happy with any of these versions. Perhaps it is too early to put the creature in there, I think first I have to do some further modeling work and painting of textures - and hope that inspiration will come to me:arteest:
...Fortunately there is enough time to work without a hurry!
Stay tuned...

Hiya!
I like the third option best because it resembles the concept sketch best. Speaking of the concept sketch, the thing I like in there a lot is the fact that your monster is much closer to the lighthouse which in my opinion adds to the impact of the image and the size of the beast. Also the wild water would add a lot, the wild water would be from the monster monster splashing out from the watersurface I guess, not from stormy wheather because fog and wind do not really go together I think. So the fog and the lighthouse lights will set more mood...
Anyways, I like where you're going with this image!

Hello, Sabrina. Lightning speed work! I got some crits for your last update.
First. Look, I can't see any relations between kighthouse and monster.
Second. I don't like the compositions, non of them.
Third. Whole scene is kinda grey and boring.
Now what I can sujest.
First and second. If I were on your place, I'd prefer monster attaking the lighthouse.
Third. I'd prefer night lighted scene.
Sorry for crit, but I think It may come in handy.
Bye. And Good luck, Sabrina.

It sounds like you are not quite settled on the creature pose/position. Maybe just try a whole bunch of tests of different poses etc. Is your creature boned? I would like to see his tail moved around to try different things. Maybe the creature is coming a bit too far out of the water? I know it would be a shame not to see all that fine modeling... Perhaps you could put it closer to the camera so we could see a bit into the water near it? Just some thoughts. cheers

@ Obi, Sonic-x, Grigorij and soapy : Thank's again for your replies and your crits!
I don't mind critics at all. I need different opinions and good suggestions to make up my mind, this is because I posted this very, very early wip. (And because you all wanted a first view of the creature  ) It is not more than a posing, and materials, lighting, water, and even the lowpoly models are far away from final. Cause it has been said several times: sure is that there will be fog, illumination from the lighthouse and troubled water round the creature...and perhaps a pale shining moon...:) !
@ Obi: The thing with the more calm water and the fog is exactly what I want to do later, of course the creature will generate waves and splashes!
@sonic-x: Thank's, I will take the time to work on other things first...
@ Grigorij : I want to catch the moment before the creature is going to attack the lighthouse and I'm trying to show the loneliness, confusion and the increasing frustration - and I see, that it is not working yet. I hope I'm able at all to bring it in the picture... !
@ soapy: Some good points! The monster is rigged (the quick and dirty way), so I can play around a little...:bounce:
I try to get the right point of view during the refining of the models and now I'm busy making some shaders and painting the first textures. As soon as I have some nice things I'll show them...
Meanwhile I'm glad to hear of every good idea.:)

Hi Sabrina, I was wondering what sort of texture you want for the monster... is it gonna have big scaly sort of skin, or something smoother? And we've been callling this 'spectacular' thing a MONSTER for long enough. Maybe u should come with a nice name for it? just a thought... :)

Hi,
i like the third one as well, maybe the tail is just a bit to prominent. And I have to say as well that I liked the windy sea more. It made the Picture more interesting and edgy. And "Nessie" shouldnt be too visible, more like a coincidental Picture of it.
Great work though, again. ;)

Hey Grigorij, thank's for this encouragement:wavey: , you make my day and I will paint textures now with more eagerness:arteest: !
@ digital_rebellion: What a nice idea:) . I already thought of it as the "creature" and not a monster. But until I hear a better suggestion, we can call it Flossy :D ! So all I know about Flossy now is that he will have a more smooth and glossy look. First I'm texturing the lighthouse...

Nothing spectacular yet, but a little update to show that I'm still working!
To get a reasonable high resolution brickmap for the lighthouse I experimented with some default maps, doing a lot of photoshop work. Now I have two different colored clean versions of the lighthouse, cause I'm still not sure of the final lighting, camera position and so on.
Next I'm adding more details and paint some dirt maps. So still making some unspectacular basic work...

S#it on me:eek: !!! Sabrina, that's one tought work on the texturing! I love it:thumbsup: . Looks very realistic. Everything is like it should be for the lighthouse.
Just one note. You could make the area betwean breaks a little darker, it may show relief better. And also you could add some micro damage to the lower part of lighthouse, because the lower part is closer to water.
Give us more updates.

Very nice textures for your lighthouse...
for sure... for your picture contrast, the brick version is better... but you paint version seem too clean... as a very new young lighthouse.
I think you will gain much for your moond in it growing old, with a mix of the both... an old white paint... where we see a lot of touches of these olds bricks and of the dark run-outs.
Wind and sea are often very corrosive, it's the test of time and of the elements, it's what gives a heart to this building.

Amazing job on the lighthouse textures. It's a shame that lighthouse isn't the focus on your image. Did you decide which compostion you are going to use? I think it could be nice to see the lighthouse a little bigger in the foreground of the image, and the creature about the same size and in the same place it is in the third composition test you posted earlier. It would kind of be like the point of view of someone standing on the island with the lighthouse, looking out to sea at the creature. Just another compositional idea i thought I would toss out there, because I really like what you have done with the lighthouse.

Hi daWinky,
posts ago you asked for different points of view.
I think, you should set the loneliness in the center of your scene.
This means in my opinion to place the monster and the lighthouse at opposite sides of the scene.
They should balance out the set around a big bunch of nothing. Meaning fog and water in movement with dramatic lights shining on it.
But next I wait for your announced monster update. At least a wireframe. At it's best a skinned wet old and scary monster direct from the deep.
@daWinky: not afraid of monsters. Give me a hammer and some wire and I build you a frame for flossy (But I'm so sorry, only math calculated curves and structs, I'm an engineer not a 3d-Artist)

Adding teeth and eyes will hopefully improve it, but I will think of remodeling the face (before
unwrapping:twisted: ).
I'm a little unhappy with the balance between a terrifying monster and a desolate, lonesome
creature:shrug: . Because this is a very important point of my scene I should take my time to
think it over. Perhaps inspiration ( or some good suggestions) will come during weekend!
@ gpepper: Thank's:) ! No texturing before next week I guess...
Stay tuned!

I think that before, Sabrina will try to make her more malicious, not ? :)
You've been faster with posting than me:) , Lemog, haven't seen yours before I answered.
But you bring it to the crucial point: Flossy needs some additional work...but not too much...:curious:
If someone can show me a terrifying monster which looks lonely and confused at the same
time...any suggestions are welcome!
-sabrina, waiting for inspiration...
Lemog
10-07-2005, 09:54 AM
Some ideas :
lonely confuse -> one larger eye than the other, and not at the same height... head slightly leaning on the side.
terrific -> an open and twisted mouth in which we sees the teeth... red throat...and strongly opened nostrils, the sign of anger.
Zapan
10-07-2005, 03:11 PM
Ouh yeah I see your really hard choice you have...really difficult...
Ok Lemog ideas are good , and could surely work, adding some ideas :
If you can get him closer to the camera , focusing on his head , wild open mouth, with a bigger jaw and teeth I think you can have a frightening , spectacular look. Plus with some waves , water particles etc... it should be very impressive...
And just put on the eyes expression some sadness and lonely look... As well we would see a scary monster at first , and then looking more carefully hie eyes a lonely sad animal...
Woooaaaa , I just realise the awesome difficult job it will be to get those feelings just in his eyes ... Well it's just a suggestion.
I will try to help you as much as possible...:bounce: :bounce:

That is really a fantastic model! All it needs now is teeth and skin with lots of wrinkles which will add realism to it. You should also set up the shaders so that it looks wet and slimy. Here is a picture that might be helpful to you if you are intending to put in wrinkles.

hi daWinky,
I disagree with gardogg. He asked for to much wrinkles. His picture shows a land living beast, not ocean living animal. The skin should be pretty sleek. The power of evolution would penalize additional flow resistance with extinction. Due to this, a ocean living animal with lot of wrinkles is pretty unrealistic.
I thing Lemog's idea will work, but be carefully not drift into comic style!

Ok, here is a little update of Flossy.
I decided to give here a more smooth look and not building such a terrifying monster. The basic message of the story is, that a lonely creature is coming to the lighthouse,
attracted by the foghorn, to find another creature of it's species, a compagnion, a mate. I think Flossy should impress just through the huge size, the sudden appearance and the troubled water...
Still to do (as soon as I find the time):
- reworking the eye region
- adding some teeth (but more the vegeterian kind)
- adjusting the maps ( a little more bump, some scars ...)
and then I start with the water, the sea around Flossy should be turbulent...
-sabrina

First, very nice work. I love this kind of stuff!
Second, I appologize for not reading every post, so I hope I'm not repeating anyone.
There was a movie (loosely) based on this story, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Effects done by Ray Harryhausen. He had a different take on it because his animal had to move on land.
One thing he did in the movie that I thought was a good idea, was the scene with the lighthouse took place at night, so most of the animal was in silohoutte. Just an idea...
The animal's skin is looking nice, too. As others have said, I wouldn't add any wrinkles. I might add some barnacle/algae discoloration like you see on whales. That might break up the texture a bit and make him (her) blend into the environment more naturally.
Look forward to more updates...

Impressive work you have done there Sabrina. Especially the wet shader you put on "Flossy" looks very nice.

][ndy, do you mean this photo http://www.leuchtturm-info.de/ss_sturm.htm ?
Take a look to the story of the photo, written on this linked page.
Language: German!
For all other a very short and lazy translation:
...
The photographer Jean Guichard chartered a heli to shoot a picture of a lighthouse in stormy water.
The lighthousekeeper Theodore Malgorn heard the heli and went out to check what happened.
Right now the monster wave arose. He could not see it. not until he saw the spray, he turned and gets back into the lighthouse and smashed the door back into the frame in the very last moment.
He survived.
For Guichard it was the shot of his Life. For Malgorn it was only another storm with the additionally event of getting close up to hell (to death) as possible.
Please take notice: The observer changed the objekt!!
....
I beg you pardon, the translation is pretty free style. More a renarration than a translation.

Nice improvement on the tail. I would rotate and position the tail so that it catches the light like the body is in order to make it look wet. Right now, it looks dry. This update looks almost photoreal! The least realistic looking thing in the shot is the terrain. Maybe you can add some big boulders or grass or something to make the terrain look more realistic. Great work so far!
One more thing: I think it could be cool if you give the tail some sss and/or transparency to get across the idea that it is a slightly translucent fin. You could have some viens and fibers showing through the skin of the tail like a real fin would look.
Here's an image to describe what I'm trying to explain in words

First of great work.
i have some crits too.
1. i agree with gardogg the first thing i noticed straight away is that it looks real and good
but a real and good/nicely textured statue. So it needs some sub surface effects on the skin.
just some ambient texture. not to make it lighter as such because its light enough, but darker in some areas, just especially the 'contact' areas near the water need to be darker, and where the body is thickest which is the same for....
2. ...some translucency in the skin. Brightening up the thinner parts of the creature and
darkening the thicker parts with some nice warm (blood) like color to the terminator.
3. i'm a bit scared for your composition too. If you try to include too much you will make
a common error i have seen in these competitions and that is a big flat 'landscape' picture
taken from far away to show everything. if done like that it will look flat and boring. It would be nice to place the viewer 'inside' the picture with a shorter lens (say atleast 25 or less)
which would enhance the size/effect of your creature. but may need some more effort to place your lighthouse and whatever else you have worked on (and no doubt are attached to) into the scene.
hope this helps. good luck
nice work

a Stahlberg like fake .. but i'm sure there are heaps more out there now
trust me it needs it
(but its still excellent)

@ Eumel: Glad that you like it:) . Of course I can put the lighthouse in the scene, but still not very dramatic...I'm working on the water eagerly...! Stay tuned:wavey:
@ phildog: :D :D ok, ok, I'll give it a try! It's not because of the rendertimes, I just thought this is not the kind of skin (and shader) that will need SSS...but of cause I can try it, you are quite convincing...but let me work on the water first...! Thank's for your support!:)

Wow...nice composition. Just one piece of advice....tail is looking real stiff. Bend it slightly....

Hi Sabrina...u know i like very much your shading and feel. I 've noticed that u are trying to find a good persp angle. A humble idea is to put all in scene ..add boxes for what it still misses ..and the experiment with many cam angles...forget render for awhile and try to find that angle whichis perfect for u..(i don't know why but when i saw your concept PORTRAIT image came in my mind ..have u experimented at all with that kind of frame ?:bounce:

@ monsitj and dark_jedi: Thank's for dropping by and you are both right about the tail, I will fix this later...:)
@ madshooter and Sonic-X: Thank's for your nice words!!:)
@ Dimitris: Hey, thank's for your suggestion. Struggling with a mad monitor I can not work now on details, so I'm looking for the right perspective...you're right:) ! I'm thinking of this portrait variation, I can upload this to show what I've tried so far...
