Right, first stab at this.
Thought of some sort of futuristic cross between skydiving and hangliding, the athletes dive from giant floating launches that act as spectator platforms. Could be a race or some sort of acrobatic display, a sort of extreme air-gymnastics much more dynamic than skydiving, the winged equipment allowing this to happen....

Looks cool man ! I like this sketch a lot and the wings concept but despite the great sensation etc.. you should put something that will make the image really spectacular...
You got a nice start idea, men flying ! but maybe it miss something to make it really captivating...
Hope you understand what i mean, anyway keep this work up

Very nice idea. But too less action in sketch, add something loke smoke trails, more air acrobats, more objects, to make it really spectacular. And yah did I say that idea is ultramega interesting :)

Added some more divers, think the final scene will have a lot more flocking in the background, might add more dynamism and spectacle to the scene

fantastic idea, love the insect-like silhouettes. like the guy said, some coloured smoke trails might add more motion, spiralling around in the BG, & maybe you could play around with fisheye lenses so you can pack more into the frame & get some intesting gradients in the sky. also, that jumping 'barge' could be bigger, like a massive airship with thousands of people on a platform under the balloon...
This is the serious work man. Please make this drawing a spectacular 3D image.

Okay, slight composition rework, trying out putting a stream of divers from the distant ship. Also looking at adding some sort of streamer ribbon from the flight kit they wear - maybe it will add more dynamism and flow to their movements. Also looking at some sort of bannering hanging from the launches to add a further sense of spectacle

Had a further look at the ribbon idea for conveying motion, made them a little longer and more flowing than before, also looking at using different colours rather than keeping them limited to a single colour - it was too confusing. Removed some bg elements as well. Modelling soon, but no rush as there's really only 2 main models required, the floating J-class type launches and the diver model.
Wow! love the sketch man!! Definitely on the right track! I get what victim335 was saying. I think that is prob true, make sure you dont over croud the image though. I like the composition and concept so far! Good luck with it anyway :)

Yep, I agree with the danger of overcrowding the image. Can't see me adding any more elements, in fact I took some away from the last time.
The launches will probably change quite a bit as I start to get into the modelling and design for the individual elements, with maybe more colour and celebration in the spectating people on board.
Right, I guess it's time to start pushing on with the modelling beginnings and individual designs. Not really modelled many characters ( I'm an environment artist by 'trade' :) ), so this will hopefully be a challenge that leads to some improvement.

Okay, I went mad and worked most of the image up to more than a concept image should be. Still, it's helped work out some ideas for the launches and the wing design ( still needs more work ). Actually I've never really worked up a 2d image to a finished stage before ( lack of patience I think ) , so I might potter away at this even when i get onto the 3d stuff...

Thanks, I like the composition, just hope I can replicate it sufficiently in 3d.
I'm going to start the modelling tonight. Not modelled too many chars, none for a while anyways. Arms and head will be the detail areas, the rest should be easy, lots of techy bits around the torso. Hair could be a problem, might go for something quite sculpted than too spline-y.
Launches should be fine, don't know why, but all my vehicle designs always end up similar, my GSO image's ships were pretty similar.
