elements_darkness 09-11-2005, 04:53 AM Hi I would like some C&C on a project im working on. This is Earth. Im using a bryce5. Im going for photo realism. What needs changing?http://67.15.181.134/4289/9/upload/p2029923.jpg

the lighting needs to be urgently changed, having the spot reflection off the water doesnt help the realism much, apart from that, a good start, especially in bryce.

The landmasses look really good but the clouds are way to hard. Apart from that, you should put some blue gleaming atmosphere around it, i think.

The clouds definitely need to be softer, at the moment they look like big sheets of ice or scabby peeling paint. I think I do detect some depth to the atmosphere such as wayfaerer suggests but it needs to be thinner and brighter. The reflection off the ocean, while this does happen in reality, I think it needs to be toned down a little.

that's a lot better I think, but I also think maybe it would be nicer if the water area are a bit noisy...

Yeah, much improved. The atmospheric glow may be a bit thick, compared to the size of the Earth the atmosphere is a relatively thin layer, half the current size may look better.
The reflection of light off the sea could be stronger, perhaps midway between what you have now and what you had in the first picture though I wouldn't worry greatly about it. I'm no expert but I would assume that a rough sea would show less of a highlight than a calm one so the degree of reflection probably depends on local weather conditions.
I think you could also increase the brightness of the milky way, without any atmosphere to filter the light it would be quite bright and sharp, maybe just add a layer of brighter white stars over the current blue layer.

Thx Heres Version 4, Had alot of trouble with the specularity effect I think it has due to the clouds. I moved the moon as it was out of view in the other renders.

The Earth looks great now but I think the milky way is still too blue, it needs a good sprinkling of bright white stars.

Well here is the latest version for some reason I cant get the stars to light up enough on the right side of the planet.

I did manage to get them to show but only by merging 2 separate renderings into 1. This is that merged version:

Not sure how real you want it to look but here is the best actual footage I have seen recently of earth.
As posted on slashdot:
The Mercury-bound MESSENGER spacecraft took 358 images (http://www.radarvector.com/2005/09/earth-departure-movie-from-messenger.html) during a gravity assist swingby of Earth on Aug. 2, 2005. Those images were sequenced into an MPEG movie (http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/the_mission/images/flyby_images/mdis_depart.mpeg) showing the view from MESSENGER as it departed Earth.
It's pretty amazing how CG earth looks.
On the other hand if you are trying to spice it up a bit it seems that you are on the right tack. Maybe a little less specular and warm up the sun light a little.
