View Full Version : IK Leg Tutorial - Outdated?
Leonardo Vega 09-10-2005, 11:38 PM Hello,
I just finished doing the IK leg tutorial that comes with Messiah. I followed the directions, word for word... did not skip or cheat. The ONLY thing different I did was that instead of rotating bones with the edit sphere, I used the "realtime modify" to position the bones.
I must say, it was kinda odd having to add so many nulls, but oh well, just followed the tutorial.
Anyways, here are my results (ain't she purtty?! :) So elegant )...
Here's what happened when I moved down the pelvis...

This is the result of moving the left foot control up...

Here's the item list...

Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe this tutorial is just old or something. I personally don't think, for example, that a hip null is necesary. But I'm new, so I will not act as if I know anything. So please, share some wisdom with me :)

I found it abit odd there was not a tutorials on this as well
But this is how i do it
clone the ankle IK Null and reparent the whole foot to the Model ( delete the foot bones that are parented to the ankle only leaving the ankle IK null and check your IK setting on the foot
I'm sure there's afew little things you have to changed
but I Can't remember  I'm only new at this LOL:D

Nice! Since I'm using the demo, I lost it all lol.
I just want to practice animating, are there any rigged characters for us demo users to practice on?

p.s. Lack of updated docs is frustrating... especially when you see so many resources for other apps.

Quick question: Is it possible to copy the keyframes for multiple objects (like an arm chain) and paste them? When I multi-select 3 keyframes (one for each bone) and I hit copy and paste, only one of them is pasted.

pretty sure that's done with Groups
I'm just starting to explore the Animaiton workflow now, Give me afew hours :D

oops... the manual clearly says it :) (One score for pmg!)
Copying Keyframes: Hold down CTRL while dragging the keyframe you want to duplicate. Release the mouse button when the copy of the keyframe is where you want it. This works for the Dope Master and the Dope Sheet.
Copying Multiple Keyframes:
Select one of the keyframes you want to copy. When it is highlighted in yellow, click and drag a box around of the keyframes you want to copy, including the highlighted one. Now click and drag on the yellow highlighted keyframe and drag. You can select or de-select keyframes by dragging a box around them. And this works with the Dope Master as well as the Dope Sheet.
Very nice! Now, if I can find a way to mirror a bones motion... then I'm in business lol! I'll check the manual and see.
[EDIT: Go to the Edit Tab --> Choose Copy Key Range --> Source = Parent Bone of motion being copied/mirrored, Destination = Parent Bone of where the motion is going... check "Use hierarchies" if you want to mirror the motion of the entire chain or leave it unchecked if you are only copying/mirroring a single bone... then click "copy". Super!]
I wonder if there is another way to do it. Without going to the "edit" tab and staying in "animate".

yeah...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pmGmessiah/
Heres a slew of examples for you use but also the demo comes with the Content folder with character rigs of various kind: quadraped, bipeds, dinos, spiders, etc
Lyle wrote a script for mirroing motion.... do a search here or at PMG yahoo group (which is their offical correspont location).
Alsp Joe Cosman reverse IK foot is pretty much the unwritten rule of how to rig a character 'sfoot. No one mentions it because out of good graces they want to feed Joe Cosman since he created the CDs telling the process (which is fast and simple and very effecient).
So yes Fred's tutorial is lil sluggish but mist messiah uses Joes now 2 year old + rigging CD.

Thanks Julez!
[EDIT: Redundant question, I fully understood the answer :) ]
I was thinking about buying his cd's, but I was worried about how old they were. Is there a sample file with this setup? I'd like to try it.
Btw, I joined the newsgroup, hopefully I get accepted lol.
