Well as usual I will be building a bunch of new toys for this scene. This time I am going to concentrate on tin toys. Which is a pretty good challenge in terms of getting the UV maps and the textures to look decent. I have one idea about a possible scene but I am going to save that for now and just concentrate on doing some models and textures. I will be doing a sketch later but for now I can tell you that this image will have a cast of thousands. Images to follow shortly.

I decided to start out easy after totally screwing up an attempt at building a robot. Simple model but pretty clean. Needs to have the symmetry sides fixed in place and then the edges worked.

A little test to see how the UV map works. The textures for these tin toys will make or break how they look so I will be pouring a lot of work into them.

Progression of a tin toy head. Early modeling, quick texture draw out, line art texture. I will probably go back in with bodypaint and rework some more. I am trying to learn vector drawing, but but I suck at it and getting the maps to play nice with the UVs is tricky.

Yep it is supposed to be Marilyn Manson. I made a different marilyn manson doll in the past and it sucked too. Maybe once I re-paint this one it will look a little better. Hey JDDog you are right about the eyes, well depending which picture you look at, but I will fix that. Plus I think I will make the white skin slightly pinker and I lengthened his nose.

I was thinking the model should be more menacing and kool but the silly toylike qualities are growing on me. Onto building the body.

Post as many and as wacky of ideas as you like. I am going to try and model the top 3 or so most popular suggestions.

For instance, my own tentative to do list at the moment contains:

Jesus
dancing Skull
Dita
race car driving bear
Terminator (the Arnie one)
John Wayne Gacy
Moby Dick, with the Ahab ride along.
Adolf Hitler

I should mention that you can vote for as many characters as you want and vote as often as you want, but only one vote per celebrity/idea. Lists are welcome. I will prolly take a tally around the end of this month, and start the modeling on the top pick at that time. Meanwhile I have lots to keep me busy.

Right now it is a 4 way tie for the lead, hahah. I will throw down some swing votes if the voting remains this sparse. I get one vote too. Right now I am praying that a gaggle of Donny Osmond fans do not flock in here... :-)

Hi Soapy, looking unique and great as always my friend! I'm a little suss on the mouth corner of the whale but understand it might be a style choice...

I wasn't quite sure whether to build an add on for the jaw or build it in. So I went build in, I the polys are folding funny there I will work on it. Or maybe I will build a seperate jaw. Plus I have to build the fin er flipper? and arms for Ahab.

gosh you're going to be busy soapy!! are you going to use a few basic meshes for the characters and modify them , or each one individually?

I will probably recycle some of the meshes once I build them out. But some will probably get fresh starts depending on how unique they are. Plus I think there is going to be a mix of different kinds of toys so that will mean starting from scratch.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Some of those character suggestions are cracking me up.

Not really, anything can be co-opted in Billys basement art-gasm. In the past the limiting factor was my modeling ability but I am getting a little better all the time. Plus I am not all that good at designing cutsy models but today I was struck by devine inspiration. Couldn't get it out of my head actually...

If I may tho, I'd suggest tweekin the corners of his eye... unless they're meant to protrude like that Do you mean the eyeball or the lids? There are a couple of points I could pull back to round out the eyeball. The head and eyeball and teeth are all one mesh I think it helps give it that vinyl look. I am not super fussy, hell its a rubber toy, but I will fix it. edit --> (ok fixed now)

hi soapy as stylish as ever! and pretty fast progression of modeling man! you must be thoroughly enjoying this! have fun mate! Yeah I burned up my saturday, but I enjoyed it. Then sunday mapped out the textures in a couple hours. It is probably the fastest I have put together a model like this. I guess the speed modeling sessions on renderosity helped.

I had lots of inspiration for this little guy. Saturday morning my son and I listened to the song that inspired this model about 30 times. It was a big hit in the 1950's, it sold 3 million albums and something like 100 million singles or some such craziness. If this song gets in your head it will rot yer brain.

Still dont know this guy? more hints later.

Ah no, but if you like I can put Puff down as one of your votes...

Shakes knows where the purple guy comes from, I told him in email, and he is teasing me now. However it is not a bad hint, but if the kid wants to hear the Puff the magic dragon song on my computer he is dreamin... that other song is bad enough.

Get your votes in for tin toys and vinyl for me to model...

I think giving him a belt could be good, a belt with a big buckle as the dwarfs have in "Snowwhite"Yes, I think I will try on a belt, I keep thinking of this guy as an alien powerlifter. my suggestions would be tighten up the 'v' around his neckline for the seam of his clothes, exaggerate the joins you've made just slightly more, and give them all equal bevels and maybe emboss a small logo on his chest... I think he'd like some lips to match his eyes too. The lips are an easy fix. The neckline will be a bit trickier, my polys on this model dont flow very well, but I think something can be done in paint to put in the neckline thing. I am not sure what you mean about the joints, but I will look into it. A chest logo sounds good, Maybe I can fit something twirly like his antennae.

So as promised a little about the concept: For Spectacular my basic plan is simply building a toy scene with lots of models. I don't have a super duper concept yet. But I have a couple of ideas.

My first idea was to do a sort of 'SPECTACULAR 50 ft. WOMAN" scene with a large central female robot and lots of others all gathered around in a carnival setting.

The second is along the same lines but with more of a Burning man type spectacle freakshow spectacular feeling to it.

There is one other even more nebulous idea I that is about just having a whole bunch of spectacular things going on. A spectacular collection of toys? heheh.

Since I dont have a strong idea yet, I am mostly just going to try and have fun and work through the process. I like to start with the seed of an idea and work along with it and see how it develops. Often I find that if I start out with a rigid set plan and work strictly towards it the image fails. But often the secondary ideas or ideas that spawn out of it along the way work out nicely. So I am mostly flying by the seat of my pants at the moment. Making models and fooling around is my primary concern, winning is secondary and pretty much a long shot in any case. But you never know..

Some specific ideas I am hoping to include are a new stone tile floor and inflatable plastic clouds. But both will require some careful modeling to be successful, so we shall see. Also I was thinking a star-field background in behind all the action.

cheers soap

shakes
09-23-2005, 02:08 AM
hey soap, they're both good ideas...tough to pick. I like the 5o ft female robot, but the burning man freakshow would really suit you. could you combine both? maybe have the freakshow as the main concept, and throw in the girl bot as one of the characters?
maybe hovering in the background..?

More work on texturing this guy. I tried out a little displacement on the yellow parts and changed the colours around. Also did some fixes on the modeling, better toenails and fingernails. And installed a few bones in the arms.

the bump map looks really good. Actually it is a displacement map, but I am thinking it might as well be a bump instead. Depending on how far this guy is from the camera it would save a lot of render time to switch the map to bump. At first it stuck up a lot more but I dropped it down and the displacement doesnt show much now.

If you look in any kids toy box you will find all different styles. But you are right this one is way out there. I was thinking of it as a sort of futuristic high tech toy. To suit that 'future history' thing they mentioned in the mission. If all goes well she will be flying in above the other toys. I have been feeling under the weather the past couple weeks. But I do have an update and will try and post it tonight.

As for my theme, it is about the 'arrival of the princess'; a brand new high-tech toy of the future floating in above the antique toys of days past. She is the spectacular brand new high tech wonder... solar powered, lightweight poly-composite psuedo metal tintanium endo skeleton and ectomorphic ultra pliable electrostatic skin. With AI powered by a nano zeus u-7 processor capable of an incredible 385 gigaflops. Her personality is roughly equivalent to a 3 year old child. She is happy and bouyant in disposition. In good weather she can stay aloft indefinitely during daylight hours and has the onboard guidance and navigation programming to execute delicate and sophisticated aerial maneuvers.

I textured up the monster foot and did a few SPD tests. That is sub poly displacement. Here are the results, no SPD just straight displacement of course the fastest, but I think I will go with SPD set to subdision level 1 fairly reasonable at 21 sec. I am using cinema 4d 9.1. Subdivision at set at 4 went over 2 min, too slow! Besides I don't think it looks as good as 2 or 3.

Great idea for the interlocking mats... the scale als here (scale and dimension) now make sence to giving a puppet dimension at your objects... can be casual, but I find it very interesting :wip:

Another flooring test, I wasn't very fond of the first one. I think this will work better. Once I get the texture tiles looking the way I want I am going to bake them and then overpaint them again as a group in bodypaint. Scratches and stains etc. This set up may be overkill but the poly count is low and I like the expandability of the modular approach. Thoughts?

Great to see the alien toy back! Thanks Gunilla. I guess I should have mentioned that this is just the colour channel. I will be adding reflection, diffusion, bump and another layer to the colour channel soon. I will try and beat it down so it looks worn in.

More work on the flooring texture. I adjusted the colours a bit and added some reflection. Do you think there is too much reflection? Maybe I should drop it down or paint a quick reflection map in along with diffusion and drop some areas down?

A minor update, I decided to make the floor one big texture map instead of seperate planks. It will be a lot easier now to add the other channels to the texture map. And it is almost as good looking. The floor map is 8000 x 4000 pixels. Maybe a bit bigger than what I need for this image but as always these parts wll be used for future images also. I like to overkill the floor since I often zoom in and need the resolution.

That model is my idea of a north american version of the Stone of Destiny in Edinburgh castle. You know, the Scots got their stone back from those dastardly brits back in 1996. I was staying in the this B&B near Edinburgh and got an hour dissertation on the whole history of the stone from the proprietor. He insisted I take note of the stone when I went to the castle. After we left the room with the jewels and the stone I asked my lady how she liked the stone and she replied "What stone?" She had to go back and look again. "It is just an old rock?" hahah.

Anyway I thought I should make my own Mad Max style concrete chunk of destiny.

Hey man your lure looks very reallistic, I could truly believe that it's a real photo :) awesome work man :D Hey thanks, and sometimes it can be a problem when some parts are very realistic and don't match up with the rest of the elements. I guess I will try and work hard to bring the rest of the models and textures up to the level of the lure.

Shakes was having just opposite problem with his Elvis image where the food he made felt too realistic and he was worried it didn't fit with his cartoon style.

nice one soapy! you're great with those little gadgets! lotta work in that little lure. I like the hook and the fastener. Yep, I learned some new things making this thing. It took me half an hour of fiddling to realize I didnt have to model the spline for the keyrings that hold the lure on, a helix spline was the answer, DOH. Plus I am getting better at reducing the poly counts of sweep nurbs. One thing you can't really see in these renders is the texture for the lure has an alpha and underneath is a metal texture so the scratches and the backside of the lure are shiny metal. Maybe it will show up at high resolution. Or I could make bigger scratches.

I think my subconscious must have zeroed in on Elvis's shorts for that lure colour. hahah. Actually I was thinking leopard colours so I might change my lure to brown and orange? Er brown and black? Or not.

Its gonna be a great image Soapy. You've kept us guessing all the way Oh Jeez, now you are putting the pressure on.

Well I have assembled all the elements into the scene and rendered it a couple of times. I am getting an out of memory message, when I try to use DOF at full res. So now I am working around that problem. The DOF is pretty important to this image so I need to get that one solved. But otherwise all is well. I just have to find the final arrangement of the players and do a little texture painting. Oh and lighting. Oh and final compositing and editing. Ok maybe I am worried. hahah. Renders at full res are running about 10 minutes long at the moment, but still I highly doubt I will be using radiosity but I might take a quick look into that too.

Gunilla
12-01-2005, 04:48 PM
Maybe it's not a good solution for you, but have you tried applying the DoF in Photoshop with lensblur on the Z channel? That's how I did it since I couldn't stand the rendertimes for making it in Max. Works rather well I think. Perhaps it could work for you too?

I just want you to have more time to produce the remaining feet :scream:

soapy
12-01-2005, 05:14 PM
Yep thats an option Gunilla, but I am having a little trouble controlling the DOF in the multipass rendering to get the alpha channel for photoshop. I will keep fiddling and see if I can make it work.

soapy
12-01-2005, 05:55 PM
Ok I got the multipass render with the depth channel working nicely. Does anyone have any suggestions for how best to use it in photoshop. I am afraid I am not very expert in that. I've done it a couple times with less than perfect results. :-/

Gunilla
12-01-2005, 06:20 PM
I'm certainly no expert - but, you need to have Photoshop CS or above, and then place the depth render ( I don't know how it works in your app, but I got it as a separate greyscale image) as a new alpha channel for your full render. Then use Blur - lens blur and adjust the settings to your liking.
I think Antropus did an explanation in his thread the last challenge for how to do it, you might wanna check it out.

Good luck

Cartesius
12-01-2005, 11:46 PM
Just load the rendered Depth layer in a Photoshop alpha channel (don't have to be CS) and load it as a selection. Now play with the various Blur types (lens blur is CS only, I think). I use a plugin called Lenscare (http://www.frischluft.com/) for this, which is excellent but pricey (was much cheaper when I got it). Another Photoshop plugin I've heard a lot of good things about is Depth of Field Generator (http://www.richardrosenman.com/dofpro.htm).

12-02-2005, 04:25 AM
Thanks guys those suggestions were helpfull, it took me a while to get my head around how to get the alpha mask into the right place in photoshop, even though I've done it before. I like the blur that cinema does believe it or not and so I came up with workaround. I managed to get DOF working at half of full res so I upscale that in p-shop and use it with my alpha and original full size multilayer render. It works fine plus you get this kinda trippy blur not blur effect if you want and of course it can be combined with photoshop blurs. Unfortunately I dont have CS so I will have to make do the best I can.

Things are looking up.

one thing I noticed- the little guy on the brick is a similarish colour to the brick- he might stand out more if the stone were a slightly different shade Godd idea, I will hammer that stone texture in photoshop. The problem is not so noticeable at high res but it would be better a beige sandstone colour anyways.

When I first put all the models in the scene and rendered I was a bit put off by how it looked, I was like 'huh wha huh?'. Everything sat where I had envisioned it but it wasnt really what I expected. But I have warmed up to it a lot since. It is sort of serene and I thought it was going to be melodramatic. But I like it this way, it flys in under the radar.

It is funny but sometimes for me after some time has passed I start to feel a disconnect from my work. A sort of detachment from it like as if someone else had made it. It has only been a month or so but I already get that feeling, like where the hell did that purple guy come from? He was born in a moment of inspiration that is distant and now he feels a little alien to me. And I am really starting to hate that yellow guy. Kind of like seeing a 20 year old painting and thinking 'Jeez did I really paint that?' Just a small observation, I am not losing my mind or anything.

Haha, loving it! And can't help but wondering who this collection belongs too - really makes my mind go wandering. And the level of DoF is just fine, I think.
Can relate to that disconnected experience too - for me it's probably related to how deeply involved I got with a project. The more obsessed I am when doing it, the more shocking is the waking up.

Oh, and it looks like you're going to make this in good time too - congrats!

Jddog, I think radiosity is out of the question this time the renders are currently taking 6.5 hours versus 9 minutes for regualer renders, haha. I am going to work on the lighting and have already made adjustments to the DOF.

Gunilla, the collection belongs to Billy, you can see some of his other collections here:
