View Full Version : Star Wars CG project
viper550 09-10-2005, 07:04 PM Hi everyone. This is my second try in making a small cg film.It wont be anything spectacular since i made sure not to set the bar very high.Experience from my last try showed me its better to start with very low expectations. It will be a space battle involving x-wings,star destroyers, tie fighters and rebel cruisers.
Im not going to recruit any members since me and a friend of mine Nektarios are working together on this.Right now we have almost completed the first 5-6 shots of the movie. We are not going for high detail since we dont have the hardware to render very high detail shots and most of the time the camera will move fast.
Now i must point out that the models are not made by us.Originally we would have made all the modelling but we thought that since they would look identical we could use some already made models. All the models are freeware and downloaded from various sources.Im not going to get credit for something i didnt make.I wish i could remember the sources i got these so i could give proper credit.Only the fighters and the cruisers were already made. The scenery with the planet and everything else including the animation, special effects, lighting etc etc are made by us.
Im mostly in charge of creating the shots and most of the animation and camera movements while my friend is working on the special effects like lazers and explosions.
Im just hoping you like what we are trying to do.Any comments will be welcome.
Here are some pics for you to see.Everything is work in progress.

The models don't seem to blend well with each other--"breathe the same air", as somebody (can't remember who) once said. It looks like a bunch of models were prelit and pasted into this big project, but they don't all match. . . I know lighting is really hard, but you should probably do some more work on it.
Otherwise, good luck with the project. I'm working on my own Star Wars animation, but I'm not very far along yet. . .

I know what you mean.Lighting still needs work in the scenes but for now i will leave them as they are.I want to make some test animations first to see how much it shows when the models move.
I knew i would probably have this problem since the models are not from one source but anyway im not trying to make it perfect. And lighting is not my strong point either.Anyway thanks for your comments.
Right now im working on the shot where one of the shield generators explode.I will update as soon as i have done some progress.

Thanks for the comments.I just hope we can make something that you will like.
I was rendering the first 2 shots on my 2 computers and what worries me the most right now is storage.I render at PAL D-1 720 resolution targa files and i have more than 2gb of data. Each frame is almost 1,5 mb.I hope to be able to solve that problem.

First off, what kind of software are you using? That will give me some ideas of the features that are available to you. Second, how powerful is your computer? If its high end enough, ray trace your shadows and cut down on the light, the effect will be amazing. As to you STAR WARS image thats there, I think its the first one. Get a picture of that same thing online, whether its the real thing or something with pictures in it. Use that as your background image and trace it with splines, and then make them renderable and wider. Trust me it works, I've done portions of this kind of stuff before. If you need more help, dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the advice.Right now im working with 3d studio max 6 but because my friend has a few problems with his computer i will start working with max 7.5 and this will be used till the end of this film.
My pc is a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 with 1GB of ram.I dont know if its enough but some of the shots are already very slow at rendering because of the high number of objects shown.

Okay, 3ds max is my choice of software too, so if you need help exploiting some of its features, don't hesitate. Going back to the lighting, my personal favorite for space environments is the regular old omni light. It replicates light in a space environment well b/c of its multidirectional characteristics. Just go into the shadow rollout and turn on advanced raytracing, but if you're looking for a more timely preview, use area shadows. Sometimes, you may want to use more than one omni, one on the side you want there to be lots of light, and one on the other side that you still want to be able to see using a low intensity.

I must point out that im not expert in any way and although i work with 3d max for about a year now i believe i know only basic things. So i will need help and advice from all of you people. This way i will be able to make it as good as i can.
flyboyscn06 - Thanks for all help and advice you give me.For all the scenes i use 2 omni lights.I do that because if i use only 1 omni only one side of the fighters and the cruisers show.So i added another in the left side to act as an ambient light. The first omni is placed a little towards the planet.Since you seem to know some things about lighting i have a problem and need any suggestions.Since the models are taken from different sources when i put them in the same environment some show more lit than others. You can clearly see this in pics 2 and 4.The shots are from the same environment using the same lighting setup but the star destroyers are brighter than the medical frigate. Can i do anything to correct this?I know this is little detail comparing to the whole scene i want to create but if there is a way to correct this without much trouble i would like to hear it.Do you know why this is happening?
Art1977 - I have made some early test animations of some scenes and they look great.I hope i can make something good that all of you will like.
Right now im finishing the shot that the fourth pic was taken from.I just have to replace the star destroyer with an updated one that has all laser emitters installed. The x-wings will be under heavy fire.Im also working with the shield generator destruction shot but i cant do much since im waiting my friend to show me some tests for the explosion. If its good i will complete that scene too.

Not many updates.More shots are being created and some have just finished. My friend found a way to show the shield generator explosion without using particles. This way it will be easier to render the scene. From a test animation it looks very good.Right now we have 6 completed shots and another 5 are in production.
I will post new pics as soon as i have some.
