Hey there, i joined my IT course recently.. they have maya 6.5 and teaching us some basic stuff. Me being familiar with 3d already im finding it relatively easy. But i have a few questions regarding cinema 4d tools/methods in alias maya 6.5.

Firstly i followed a few tutorials, i've learnt how to extrude, cut.. and a few other things.

But i find it hard trying to join edges, i have a simple 8 sided sphere and i've cut the top off, so the top edges are not joined with each other. I'm trying to join the edges together to form a solid half sphere. I've tried using all the tools including;
merge edge tool
collapse
merge verticles

None of them work, and the merge edge tool warps the polygons. (example attached)

Edit Polygons -> Fill Hole.

Thanks, but in the future i'd like to join two sides (edges) together, without it warpin the mesh.

Is it possible to do that?

xsub, maya is doing exactly what you are telling it todo. When you use merge vertices or collapse the computer is doing just that and combining either the edge or the vertices together. SOooo what u need to do is either use the fill hole command under edit polygons or use the append polygon tool to fill that hole with a polygon face. This would give u a half sphere that is closed.
I hope this helps

Append to Poly tool. To use the tool, select the start edge, select the end edge, hit enter (or "y" if you want to keep going and use the tool again).

Select all edges on top
Extrude +y
Select all the vertices on the ends of those extruded edges and snap them to and point on the grid
Merge them
Move the single vert that is in completed control of all of those faces to the center of the object parallel to the edges you first selcted
They will all be tris but the hole will be closed then you can quadragulate them if you wish..

Just tried that, it doesn't seem to work, and selects the animation current frame with a slider as the mouse pointer. Also i am in modelling mode.
