So this concept really isn't of the final composition just of specific elements in the scene. The story is this. A man is driving and somehow manages th get his car covered in honey. As he drives along with the car covered in honey flies are attracted to the honey and land on the car where they become stuck. Flies continue to accumulate until finally there are enough flies trying to escape the honey that they lift the car off the ground. The story is taken from the movie Big Fish, it was only mentioned briefly in big fish and never illustrated and I thought it deserved illustration. To add interest i think i'll try to make it seem as if the character was in his way to a date, hence the flowers. And i'm debating whether to have him asleep and not yet aware that his car is now flying. Or aware in which case i'd have to think about the emotion he'd be feeling. So feedback on that would be great as well as any way to improve the story.

This is the progress on the car model. Its a Ford 1949 which i thought would create the right time period for the image. Any critiques on the modeling ar very welcome

I'd say have the man on his way to a date. And he just has woken up. Realizing that his car is midflight and he is partially taking off (his arm is covered in honey and the flies are lifting him slightly). Also show the reason why the car is covered in honey, maybe have pieces of barrels stuck here and there with one having the word honey written on it.
Great work thus far. Keep it up.

hey thanks very much for the comments, i think you've nailed exactly what part of the story should be shown Nichod. I can see the look on his face very clearly one of curiosity and amazement w/ a hint of horror as he thinks of how this will sound when he tries to explain to his girlfriend why he stoood her up.

So coninueing on with the fly, the car is pretty much done, it still needs a few things like mirrors but i thought i'd start in on the fly. The wirefram you see is subdivided once to give a better idea of what the final will look like. I'm not sure how i'm gonna manage to get thousands of those things on the car with out crashing. I think i'm going to have to do some normal mapping and render it out in passes of a couple hundred flies at a time. Please give any crits of model or suggestions about the best way to duplicate things.

So this is pretty much the finished fly. It looks really nice subdivided its too bad that that high quality subdivided model can't be used in the final. I think i may add some hair during the texturing stage using cards. Other than that this is the form i have to work with for the fly. Any crits on modelling are appreciated gotta the fly turned out alot creepier than I expected. (i sort of imagined flies in fairy tales as being much nicer) oh well i really like the creepy look.

nice idea! and excellent car modeling and the details on the tire! the fly though looks odd is it an imaginary one? in that case it great!;)
cheers!

the fly was based on some red eyed fly. I think what probably makes it look weird is the wings, I wasn't sure quite how to pose the wings of a fly in flight seeing as there aren't many reference pictures of flys in flight. I guess if it looks good as an imaginary fly thats great seeing as this is really supposed to be more of a fairytale type image. Also the fly is going to be seen from quite far away.
