Well, I'm gonna give it a whirl. This is my first challenge. I've been a long time admirer of the challengers in the past though, all the way back to the Gods & Monsters Challenge. :P

I'll try to do a good job.

Here's my pic:

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon5.jpg

Is it not "toon" enough ya think?

And, no, I'm not a lumberjack. lol :D

[EDIT] I've gone ahead and put my latest pic up here. If you would like to see my previous sketches, they're numbered (cg_toon1.jpg, cg_toon2.jpg, etc). :)

I think you have the oppotunity to make a really enjoyable character. Personally the sketches of your self are a lil to realistic in my opinion. I would concentrate on really over exagerating the amount of hair you have (which by the way is, wow!). Think of all those wonderful santa clause caricatures you've seen.
;)

GL!

Thanks for the comment. :)

Yeah, I was thinking that maybe that first drawing was a little more "comic book" style than "cartoon" style.

Getting a cartoony style is more difficult than you'd think! lol

Anyway, Here's 2 more sketches... I think I'm getting closer to the style I want to go for.

[edit] link removed. See first post. :)

Speaking of comic books, my idea for the final composition would be a cartoon superhero version of me. :) I'm kinda chubby (obviously) but I've got the frame for it (6'3", 250 lb). And despite how old I look in my pic, I'm just 21... just a baby. lol

Anyway, your comments are much appreciated. Thanks!

mtmckinley

Here's 2 more ideas. I definitely think these are more toward the "cartoon" range of the spectrum. Perhaps a combination of these two?

[edit] link removed. See first post. :)

Nightwing
11-07-2002, 04:06 AM
I prefer the last two over the previous batch.

I think in the prev lot you look santa-clausy and jolly, and if that's what you're shooting for then great.....but I much prefer the right-hand one in the most recent batch, sorta mischievous glint in the eye which could work V well :)

ndat
11-07-2002, 04:07 AM
Whoa cool stuff :), Id go with toon 2 drawing 1 it looks the coolest. Hmmm perhaps if it wasnt so late I could validate that more, but I will definatally follow this, hopfully when its not so late :)

mtmckinley
11-07-2002, 04:12 AM
nah, I'm not really going for Santa. lol I'm much too young for that. ;)

I'm liking the third batch, myself. I think it fits in with the challenge topic more.

We'll see what the next round of sketches bring. :D

mtmckinley
11-07-2002, 05:00 AM
Here's another set of sketches...

[edit] link removed. See first post. :)

I think I'm leaning toward the last 2 (front and side)... I think it comes across more of the superhero look, but yet still looks like it might be a caricature of me perhaps... :)

dur23
11-07-2002, 02:14 PM
Thats wicked!

The last ones you posted here are the best so far! Two things i would do tho is over exaggerate the hair you comb accross in the front as you could do some wicked stuff with that! and maybe make the beard a lot bigger. a lot a lot!

thats just my opinion:)

mtmckinley
11-07-2002, 04:44 PM
Thanks. :)

I'm thinking this will be the final design...

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon5.jpg

It's a bit more curvey like most toons generally tend to be. I'll be sure to add a side view and then start on body sketches next.

I think it's quite fun to see how my sketching has evolved from "semi-real" to "cartoon." Hopefully, the rest of the process will go as smoothly.

heh, thanks. :D

I'm a pretty burly guy... back in highschool, played tackle in American football... biggest guy on team. that kinda thing. :P Now, I've just gotten a bit bigger around the midsection and haven't shaved. lol

11-09-2002, 03:20 AM
Wow, thanks guys! I can only hope it continues to fill such lofty expectations!

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon15.jpg
Getting the body started. :) I'll probably loosen up the shirt... too tight right now.

mtmckinley
11-09-2002, 04:00 AM
Small update... still a little too tight I think... but maybe this is better... better to have a little definition, ya think?

Still need to add collar, more wrinkles and buttons. Maybe a pocket too.

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon16.jpg

I thought this might be interesting: Here's the model so far in congruence with my reference image. I had to move the head up some, because the way it was in the drawing didn't really translate to 3D well. :P

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon17.jpg

Nightwing
11-09-2002, 04:32 AM
yaaaaah this looks great

Excellent job on the head. Shirt/torso is taking shape V nicely, dunno about the definition tho, at the mo it looks more like shoulderpads.....perhaps since he's a large guy the muscle should be less defined and merge more with everything else?

Keep it up....

mtmckinley

Shoulders still need some tweakin'. Gonna add buttons next... then arms. I hope I can do my sketch justice, as I like those forearms. :D

mtmckinley
11-09-2002, 04:06 PM
Obviously just getting started on the arms. Hands are something I've always had a problem with. Hopefully these will turn out alright. :)

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon19.jpg

Edit:

Here's another pic... I think it's getting there. Feel free if anyone has any suggestions or pointers. Like I said, I've never been all that happy with the hands I've done in the past. :) Thanks!

11-09-2002, 11:06 PM
I've got the hands pretty fleshed out! :) I'm pretty happy with them. I know the wrists are... well, non-existant, but remember back in my body concept drawing? That's kinda what I'm going for. If it doesn't work though, I can always change it. :p

great modelling!! i like the proportions...especially the forearms

color suggestions? how about red checkerd shirt.. hehe

Rye
11-10-2002, 04:42 AM
this is really coming along nicely. I like the hands a lot...but are you really that ripped? ;) The wrinkles in the shirt look great too. One other thing is that your glasses look strange with that blue tint in the lense. Are they tinted blue in real life? If you want the lenses to show up just put something to reflect in the scene and raytrace the lenses

Very nicely done. I am really enjoying the development of your cartoon self. What are you using to produce the renders? Is it final gathering or GI or huh?

mtmckinley
11-10-2002, 06:04 AM
levin - Thanks! I'll give it a try. :)

Rye - lol, I used to be pretty strong back in my old American Football days. Haven't really focused on working out since then. I just thought this would be a fun exaggeration and contrast to the ol' mid-section. :D

You're right about the tint. I'll tone that down.

MDB101 - I actually didn't use any reference, other than my own drawing for this guy, but that ogre model is pretty sweet! :) The idea of the "no wrists" thing came from a comic book artist I had seen way back when. I don't remember who it was, but it stuck with me as being unique and cool looking. This is the first time I thought I'd go for it.

Hickory2.5 - Thanks! I'm using the GIJoe MEL script for the lighting. :)

Haha, looking very cool.

I love the shirt and the buttons.

What is he going to be doing?

mtmckinley
11-10-2002, 05:26 PM
Thanks, Carina!

I've been thinking about the hobby. I was thinking of having him be like a super hero or something, since I'm into comics, but now I'm not too sure.

Can't be with the computer... then there's the obligatory drawing... maybe have him sleeping or watching a movie. Pehaps in an empty theatre! That could be cool... have with with a big box of popcorn and a soda or something...

Still thinking about it. :)

Small update. I've started adding wrinkles in the pants, and I continue my shirt color experimentation. :) I've also adjusted the lighting and shaders some.

I fixed that weird blue tint in the glasses, too. Thanks!

This really is looking awesome! I'm so proud :applause: ;) I think the orange shirt works best, nice color to go with the blue! A super hero would be great! mtmckinley
11-11-2002, 04:13 AM
Thanks, Rye. :D

Btw, congrats on getting the header image over at the challenge site! :applause:

Yeah, I've been avoiding the shoes, I think. :P Along with hands, I'm not that great at shoes, although I have to admit, the hands I've done for this guy have supersceded my expectations. :)

I'm rendering some new pics to display. I've been putting in more wrinkles and stuff, pockets in the patns, finger knuckles, etc. I should get it up soon. :) Then... Shoes! LOL

mtmckinley
11-11-2002, 05:19 AM
ok, new update. :) I've rendered a bunch of views, so for the high-res version, go here: www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon35hi.jpg

Mostly I just added wrinkles everywhere... those buggers take a while to put in. I've still got more to put in on the OTHER pant leg. lol I've also added eyes, finger knuckles and a big more definition on the backside of the forearm. And little tweaks here and there. Next update will have shoes! Or at least started. :D

mtmckinley
11-11-2002, 03:53 PM

Thanks, DimitrisLiatsos. :) You like the green better?

As for the hands, I'll see what I can do, but I'm awfully happy with them at the moment. :D

mtmckinley
11-12-2002, 02:25 AM
As promised, this update has feet. :) I'm not sure if they're final, though... what do you guys think? I know I'm going to tweak them a bit... clean them up, but what do you think of their look compared to the rest of the model?

Next, is to model the teeth, inside of mouth, etc for facial expressions and to add a wrist watch.

After that bit of modeling is done, then it's to design hobby and environment... I'm tinkering with the idea of having him cleaning... vaccuming, dusting, washing dishes... all that crap. cuz it seems like I'm doing it all the time. lol

I'm thinking of using this guy after the challenge is over as a tour guide mascot for my website... I think that'll be fun. :)

Comments?

cool character, cool shoes. However, I think you should go with a solid black on the shoes. The colors are a bit distracting in my opinion.

mtmckinley
11-12-2002, 02:53 AM
yeah, I agree... that's the way I originally had them, but I thought that maybe they were too dark, so I dumped some color on them. lol

Glad to see I was right the first time. I'll post an update in a bit.

EDIT-- I know! Howzabout have him wash dishes, vaccume, scrubbing counters all at the same time! With some bewildered look on his face as his faithful pooch asks to be fed. lol That could be fun. What do you guys think?

Great update and I like the progress.

But can't you smooth'n the beard a little? It looks a bit straight around the chin area...
And the upper lip looks exactly like your lower one, but that could be just you. Expression is cool.
Cloth wrinkles are great.

Keep going.

this is coming along really great! I like the facial expression. Maybe you could have yourself dancing with a broom and a mop. But i also like the whole super hero thing. Maybe with a cape and bucket and rubber gloves....:)

A neat shot would be (from an ants perspective) of you on your knees picking up the last peice of dust on the ground. squinting real hard to try and see it.

hehehe

just my 0.2 cents...:)

mtmckinley
11-13-2002, 03:11 AM
Ok, the NEXT update will be sketches. lol I made this pic to put at the Challenge site, so I figured I'd post it here, too.

Here's hi-res: www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon43hi.jpg

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon43.jpg

Just a few minor tweaks, more facial expression work (not shown) and I put some refraction on the glasses lenses.

The only thing really left on the model is inside of the mouth and a wrist watch. I think I'll get to those later.

For now, I've decided to do a befuddling cleaning scenario... I'll be trying to wash dishes, vaccum, scrub counters, etc at same time while my dog sits in front of me with his dish out, begging to be fed. :) I'll have some sort of disgusted look on my face. lol

Very nice character, lots of personnality, you really did one great job there.

I'm impatient to see more of it :D

Thanks, Baal. :)

Here's my first sketch... kinda rough, but I hope you can tell what's going on. lol

Thanks, Ingram. :) Yours is coming along nicely as well. :D

Here's a small update... I didn't get all that much done today.

I'm thinking of only his left hand be wearing a glove, holding a dish, as his other hand will be vaccuming. :)

Very very nice work!!!

Just a little critic about the caricature...Comparing with the photo, i think that your head global shape is more round than what you did! It's just a question of scaling i think!

one of my favorit! Great!

11-14-2002, 03:45 PM
Thanks, Abyss103! :D

Thanks for the comment, Totitch. I originally had the head a little wider, but I thought it looked a little more toony to stretch it out some. Give a neat contrast to the rotund body, I think. :D

Little bit more done... Got his teeth in there, and I'm adding dishes. lol

All looks OK. But the forearms are off to me. The underside of the forearm looks too square and the overall length is too short.
The overall look is coming along ok however. With some more details like the dish holder and it will come out even better. :)

mtmckinley
11-14-2002, 08:39 PM
Thanks, for the comments, Kurtzar!

Yeah, dishwasher still is pretty incomplete. Just have the trays... still need a lot of work.

Thanks for the arm comment, as well! I'll see about rounding it. I'm not sure about the length though... it looks pretty much like I envisioned it to be. And it is a cartoon, afterall. :D

Thanks again!

mtmckinley

here's a view of the underside of the arm. I pulled a couple vertices down a smidge.

Well, it's late in my neck of the woods, so I'd better turn in. Here's what I did today. Mostly rigging. Used smooth binding rather than my usual rigid and it turned out a lot better than I thought... I'm going to have to try smooth out more often.

So, here's a render:

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon48.jpg

Now that I've got him situated, I need to adjust the lighting, but I'll wait until the rest of the environment is done for that.

And here's a wire/xray view:

That is looking superb! hehe i love the detail in the spray bottle. Well done. Im guessing that thing in your right hand will be the vacuume? wheres the mop and broom gonna go? Nice modeling on the inside of the dishwasher (the racks). Hehe it's funny cause your putting away dishes in cg....hehe well its funny to me...:scream:

Now I feel better. You see how much better it looks now mtmckinley. :applause:
I am glad you took my advice,a small detail but at the same time it glared at me. You rounded it off very nicely.Forarms now look very smooth.
Keep the details coming, the more the better for the overall scene.I really like the fact that your character is quite the mountain man in appearance and now he is doing the little dainty household duties.Just keep adding spice and details and you will have a real nice finished product.

Frinsklen
11-15-2002, 08:37 PM
so I assume your favourite hobbie is doing the washing up?
Alright...

This is really nice. I like the details in arms and clothes. I would add a little more detail on the fingers, tho. And the last pose doesnt look natural. Just a thought.

Really great job, keep it up.

11-16-2002, 03:44 AM
Thanks, guys! :D

Frinsklen - No, I don't enjoy it... I just do it ALL the time. :p All of my other hobbies have to do with the computer.

When you say add detail, do you mean the gloved fingers or the flesh fingers? The glove is kinda meant not to have much detail.

Today I took a break as I've been working on this guy pretty much every day for the past week, but I couldn't help but mess with it a little bit. I'm still fiddling with the pose. I've got a bit of clipping toward the hems of the pants, but I'll take care of that later.

He's going to be looking at a cartoon dog begging to be fed, so his facial expression comes from doing so much and yet being asked to do more. :p

mtmckinley: I meant the flesh fingers. I can see it in the picture of the arm close-up you posted. Those fingers dont seem to be as detailed as the rest of the model, (which looks great as I said before).

Cheers.

Thanks, guys!

I'll see what I can do, Frinsklen. :) Thanks for the tip!

Sorry for the lack of updates this past weekend. After working on this guy for a good week straight, I needed to walk away for a bit. I'm going to get back to it tomorrow!

I'm also reconsidering my "hobby."

Sure, having mountain man doing dishes is funny, but it's kinda... boring, don't you think?

Hmmm...

Little change... I'm still trying to mess with the lighting... Am I wrong to try to use global illumination? I can't seem to get it looking good. I'd appreciate lighting suggestions. For now, I guess I'll go back and concentrate on adding clutter. :)

Thanks!

How many polygons is your character? You should turn him into a model for Unreal 2k3. I would love to kill people looking like that.

Little change... I'm still trying to mess with the lighting... Am I wrong to try to use global illumination?

:wavey: I think that u loose some of the feeling u want to give ..just because of the use of GI....maybe u should try ...now that u have the scene in the kitchen ... a more traditional light aproach !!! I think u should start with the good old 3 light setup and move along....:wavey:

mtmckinley
11-24-2002, 08:28 PM
Thanks, guys!

I'll get back to you on the poly count, but I'm pretty sure it's a little too much for a game application.

I'll do that, Dimitris. :) Thanks for the tip.

mtmckinley
11-25-2002, 02:01 AM
Without smoothing, he's about 5300 faces. Of course, many of these are quads or some with 5 sides, so if the game needed Tris, it'd be quite a bit more.

Small update... I'm fighting with lighting. :p

suggestions are appreciated. :)

this is so cool! Hey congrats on getting the front page of cgchallenge :) I think the red and blue plates bring way too much attention to themselves and detract form that awesome character model. You might want to change the color of that wall, for one it doesnt match the curtains and it also hurts my eyes (yes i have sensitive eyes, but still) Maybe make it a lighter shade of blue in the same family as the blue on his pants. And if the wall will be blue, maybe a nice white or beige color for the curtains :)

As for the lighting. Where is the light source coming from? The corner needs to be a lot darker as well. The walls shouldnt change color that drastically if they are both facing the light. How are you lighting it right now? Are you using omnis? Where are they located?

Looking great, wish my new computer was working (grumble grumble) cause Id keep going with mine, but right now im stuck. Bummer, anyway yours is very cool :) good job!

mtmckinley
11-25-2002, 06:26 AM
Thanks, Rye. :) I was surprised myself to see my guy up there. I guess they rotate it every week or something, as now Owl-dude is on there (forgive me... the name slips my mind at this late hour). So, congrats to all 3 of us! lol

I'll be sure to get back to you with more details as to how my lights are setup. Right now, I'm using an amni up above, a spot in front and a directional from the window...

I'll be sure to fix those colors. :)

In the meantime, here's a little fun thing:

http://www.mtmckinley.net/images/home2_01b.gif

heh heh

I'm planning on giving him lots of different outfits and stuff to randomly appear on my website... so one day he may be normal, the next he may be wearing a ninja suit! lol, I think it'd be fun. :D

Feel free to give me any ideas. ;)
