View Full Version : linking noise to position

I'm trying to create a shaking motion on a character i have in AE. I've found some camera shake things on this forum that might be helpful, but I'm looking to apply the shake to layer instead of the whole window. Is there possibly a way to link sound waves or noise to the position parameter? Someone actually gave the javascript code for the expression, but the code text box didn't show the answer. If someone could show it here, it would be most helpful. Many thanks.

You can create an expression using random for example:
thisProperty = random (time*number); , or other expressions that use random numbers. you can link the parameters using the tool expression pick whip. How much to the use of the sound you can try to use the keyframe assistant (convert audio to keyframes) or plugins as trapcode sound.

If you still want to control the camera (expressions would disable this) I would simply make sure the whole comp is slightly larger than your attended resolution- precomp it, then add a wiggler (or is it wobbler?)

Sorry about the delay in replying. Thanks for the script help Vympel. I appreciate it.

defago, i thought that you could only do a wiggler on text. Could you explain how to apply the wiggler to the camera because I haven't figured out how to do it. I'm on After Effects version 6.5 .

Ok, I have one more question. Is there a way to scrub sound so that you can here it as you are scrubbing on the time line? I'm trying to time my animation with sound and the After Effects text that I'm reading says that you have to look at the waveforms in the sound layers property drop down and tough it out that way. Do you have to render a preview every time you want to hear the sound? My sound file is a .mov file so I'm thinking it should play/scrub without having to do the "RAM preview" when I want to hear sound.

edit**-Sorry, I posted the sound question before i searched the archives. The answer is that you hold down the cntrl key (Mac uses Command key) in order to get sound as you scrub the timeline.

Use the Keyframe assistant, select the parameter controled for expression,( Animation>>Keyframe Assistant>>Convert Expression to Keyframes). Apply The Wiggler.

"If you still want to control the camera (expressions would disable this)"

It actually IS still possible. Parent the layer to a null object with an expression apllied to it. Control the amount of randomness for example with an expression helper slider control. You can adjust the amount of randomness and still animate the original (child of the null) layer in any way you wish independently of the parent null.
