View Full Version : It was supposed to be for an avatar...

But I quickly realized that big eyes look horrible on small pieces...ugh...

so, I thought it was high time I make myself an avatar (especially with the challenge up and all) so I started a small self portrait, but was going to make it quirky, big eyes, elf ears...all that...then I got way too into technique (because I'm still learning, and I'm a perfectionist...) and so now it's just kind of a mish mash...

does anyone have any ideas to save it, or should I just scrap it?

THANK YOU!!
Robin

You might try making the eyes a little smaller so that they fit the face but still have impact. If this was done in photoshop you can lasso each eye one at a time (you don't have to be to precise, leave some flesh all around the eye but don't get the eyebrow or nose in your selection) edit>copy>paste and that will give you a copy of the eye on a new layer then you can edit>transform>scale and hold down the shift key while you resize the eye. When you are satisfied with the size then you can move it into position and merge down the layer deselect the eye and blend in the edges. Then do the same with the other eye. I hope that this helps.

What a darling face and beautiful eyes I do hope that you try this. If you are nervous about doing this make and copy of your work and try it on the copy. I would also widen her jawline and the left side of her face alittle to.

Hi Patti...thanks for the ideas, and I did sort of do something like that...I just added a layer and started fattening the face up a bit (and I did resize the lips to another layer, just to see how that would work)... I didn't take it very far, just to see what happened...it looks like a totally different person..LOL...

So, I really don't like it much, It doesn't look like a cohesive piece anymore.
I may just have to scrap it (though I just keep tinkering with it :banghead: )...sigh...and chalk it up to a learning experience, but thank you for the feedback!!

I liked the first verion a lot more actually.

I think all you need to do is get the perspective right on the first, and make the eyes more narrow. Or maybe give them a lot more shadow so they seem to jump out more. Nice picture :).

i really like the details in the eyes...and the hair is well done too. in fact i like the whole picture. BUT, hehe yeah there's a but, the perspective really seems to be a bit off.
the "thinner" versions looks much better, but you should try and do something about the eyes, they are not too big, but _your_ right eye needs some more work. the rest is lovely ;)

thought you could get away from me with that? :P

Pleeeese don't scrap it! She really is cute I think that you just went to far on widening the face. Use small steps. And when you give her a little more cheek give her just a little more chin with it. Generally add about the same amount all the way around. Her don't widen the area where her cheek bone is just gradually add in the narrower part. The inner corner of the right eye needs more refinement. If you made the eyes just the tiniest bit smaller I think it would look better. I'm sorry if I sound pushy but I think with some very small adjustments this could be really nice.

LOL...ok, thank you guys, I'm going to drag it back out tonight and play with it a bit...It gets to the point that you want to throw it out the window...(I could do that with a canvas...but alas, my monitor may take some damage)

so, give me a few hours, maybe I'll stick another one up...

Tuzz! :D Of course I don't want to get away with anything, that's why I come here, because in cg people don't just oooooo and ahhhhh when it's a piece of junk...a good critique is hard to come by in the art world! So give me your best shot...hehehehehe...I can take it!

thank you all for the support, I just love it around here!!

Ok Patti, just for you....though it still makes a crappy avatar...ugh...

I'm still open for suggestions...and Tuzz...I hadn't even noticed the eye...now I can't quit looking at it...I'd stick a stinking patch over the thing if I could figure out a way to make it look decent...

so...what do you think, did it do any good?

ok...I'm exhausted, off to bed...(and I still haven't gotten my concepts done so I can officially enter the challenge...lol...what a night!)

now that is definitely more realistic. the eyes fit in better. but now it almost has lost anything of that exaggerated-stylish look....it now seems more like a real portrait. i you wanna go for that, then you made the right step. i like the stylish version more, though the eyes look better now! and i am not sure if not the darker skin color made you look healthier? :P

I like the direction you're going in. The skin looks much nicer in my opinion, and the facial structure's coming together. I think the bridge of the nose could use a little work. Try changing the angle of it so the top is closer to her left eye (our right). The hair's looked good to me from the first post. Keep it up. Kon't give up!

Yea! So much better! Sorry I didn't answer sooner but I was out of town for a few days. I am so glad you did this she looks cute. I think that you did maintain the character of the girl too. Also good luck on the challenge.
