View Full Version : Let's be very Di$creet .. cooey.. mods!
xynaria 11-06-2002, 09:54 PM It appears we have a magician on the board.. lately two posts that I know of have been abducted by aliens or whatever very recently. One was the Disney buys 50 Max licences....and the other the 'are Di$creet gonna drop Max thread'
Anyone care to shed any light on these mysterious occurences lest some of the sensible amongt us think some underhand and unaccounted censorship might be taking place???? :)

Yup .. heard of em.. signed em.. saw no real signs of em.. and if you're gonna delete a post its only the right thing to do to leave a note explaining why so as not cause offence to all those who posted and read. Ever heard of professionalism? :)

I too wondered what happened to that Disney Thread, 'cause I had just posted when it was deleted. I thought NDA as such....
....oh, no.... it could've been my post, I was just getting ready to address Norbert about some price issues with 3ds Max, I think.

Didnt Disney buy Houdini off Side FX.?

The story I heard about the Disney thing is they did a quick competition between their installed maya systems & users, & a few new freelancers with some new max systems. The Maya animation came out slightly better, but they had an extra week & their systems were allready in place etc. That along with the ability to soft select keyframes in trackview convinced them that Max would be better for them for the project they had in mind (not a feature film, some kind of CG series apparently)

The Disney post seemed to be about some development in Australia involving Advanced Character Tools and included a post by Dr Mark Snoswell himself. Whilst there is a chance this contained something indiscreet, it certainly didn't appear overtly so. The other post discussed rumours about the possibilty of Max being dropped or discontinued and AFAIK, contained nothing contentious at all. I must admit I do find it beggaring belief that both posts should not only disappear but that no explanation be given for them doing so. :)

Makes you WANT to start formulating rumours.
If there was any talk of dropping max I wouldnt be surprised...I would be surprised if they didnt replace it with a rebuild or something. I sorta expected 5 to be the last max anyway.
Speaking of rumours, I heard an interesting one about Apple teaming up with AMD...which was odd concidering their relationship with IBM. Anywat something about OSX being x86 coimpatible....so you can run PC chips on your MAC.
rUMOURS ARE GREAT AYE ;)

There was something up on the Highend board as well a while back about this. I was looking for it not to long ago, and it too seams to have disappeared.
There was also some talk going on at the max webboard. They said that they would post a press release later on. I guess then it won't be a rumor any longer. :p

I don't like the way you guys talk about things you know nothing about, as for a rebuild of max, it could be nice but version 5 placed a very strong core with slick improvments to the ui.
the only big thing would be a port for unix or her sister..
even just a renderer.
as for disney, I've heard from my dealer that they choose it for their feature film after testing Advanced Character tools for maya and for max.

Aren't you doing the same thing? I mean, did you do the test? ;)

but there are people who put their soal into making it a great product and going out saying well it's outdated is simply a joke.
I've got a list of demands for improvements but I don't think that it's a sinking ship.
it just reminds me of the speculation we had few months ago about the future of maya and even if there last update wasn't as big they proved once again that they are more then alive and unless you choose to, using their new fluids will keep your boat floating.
I say stop saying it's about to die or.. simpy focus on tips for improvements and if it's not enaugh for you, port!

I realy don't care what program each of you use, I read everything about every program, true my choice is 3dsmax partly because I've been using it since 3dstudio3 in dos, but I also used maya and a bit of SI3d.
in my point of view the industry is more or less balanced and each should be using a UI that fits his needs.
don't be afraid to try.

Fine...are you saying that '$omeone' found some of the speculations somehow offensive and asked for them be removed ?
Any chance of some helpful guidelines as to what might be considered offensive or sensitive?

Hi folks,
Yes there is an explanation for the missing threads on this one. There is a very strict NDA at Disney re: the "purchase of 3ds max" as someone mentioned. Discreet specifically requested that we remove the thread to avoid any complications.
I hope that answers the burning question!!

It in no way explains the 'loss' of the other thread now does it?
Surely in most cases the post could have been edited and not the entire thread deleted without explanation :surprised

There was an announcement at the San Francisco Defy Reality show that Disney was looking for talent. Mentioning that talent with Max experience was a bonus.
I did not follow up on information.

I'm not sure about the other one - I didn't see it before it got canned.
But yeah, take a chill pill over the Disney one.

I was not as much upset over the Disney one as the other, which showed no sign of sensitive material other than some mild criticism of Di$creet.....now that could be very disconcerting.
Obviously a lot of this could easily be avoided by adopting a more proffessional edtiorial stance.

I don't think this applies when you're on someone else's board and they can be held liable for things written. If this were your web site or message board, you wouldn't have a problem (other than possible legal problems depending on what you write, since you're responsible). We agree to their terms, we have to abide by it. Nothing to complain about that as far as I can see...
-D
but they are or were (on the old board) actively discussing the purchase of 50 licenses on discreets own max support forum...without any moderation from discreet staff posting in the same thread...i understand not allowing NDA covered material to be discussed at the software developers request, but there are edit thread & lock buttons...seems a shame to just kill stuff without so much as to a why or wherefore posted and not leaving the non sensitive stuff behind + it does nothing to discourage the exact same thing happening again...
i really wish this board would get to grips with this, then it might actually move on a bit....so far the most procative posts have been the sticky "which software is the best" which leaves a hell of a lot of room more other stuff to be posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted and then deleted and then posted .....get the idea? bit myopic aint it
i wonder how much of this servers precious resources are wasted on posts that fit into this catagory only to be reposted by someone who never knew they had been deleted before...

thing is...........are posts being deleted because of the vile and arrogant cynicism Di$creet are displaying or not? :)

I wish it weren't so, but the post on the discreet board was also deleted the same day as this one. It's ok though. These boards are owned by, yes, actual real, live people, and they can make decisions to delete or not delete posts. I agree, it would have been nice to have a little blurb saying why it was deleted, but it's really not such a big deal.
I'm just still really interested in what Disney is up to with that.

"Ahhh haa haa haa haa ha ha h h... h... h... h," screamed the ghost of Bill Hicks as he realized that nothing had changed and people were still wasting their time railing at the machinations of others over things that in the end result were rather inconsequential when looked at with their third eye.
Or... maybe it is just like the Kennedy Assassination and that a global secret government is really in charge of all things related to 3d Apps and their mysterious workings.
Yeah, that's it.
If we could walk into Discreet's studio it'd be just like if we could look out the window of the Dallas Book Repository and then scream in outrage and horror, "There's no f'in way! You can't even see the road! Wow, there really is a conspiracy to keep me down."
Bummer.
Corporations suck period. Artists rock regardless of what they use. Sweat the big stuff.
