I am Currently working on a Japanese Samurai style Sword Display, and I cant quite crack the secret to making an awesome steel chrome. As I dont believe in just using textures which are images taken from the real world, mainly because they dont transfer over as easily as Matierals created in 3Ds Max, hehe...

If anyone could help, or can post links on a site that teaches the tecniques of creating Chrome textures, it would be much appreciated, thanks guys...:)

Chrome as any other relective material will only look as good as the environment it is reflecting. There are severall ways to achieve this:

1. Build the environment.
2. Use a HDRI map.
3. Use white planes(self illuminated) -> this one will create a clean studio lighting look.

Hope this helps.

edit:I've attached a sample pic. The sphere on the bottom has a very simple, highly reflective material. You can refine the look for your sword by adding scratches(less reflective and bumped inwards, if you like).

Thanks again .pd.,

Also thanks for the sample image, I was kinda confused at first, as I went and made an entire Environment of White Self Illuminated planes, placed my sword in there and then realised that its too dam bright!...lol....

But from that sample image I now understand completely what you meant. Thanks!

P.S. At some stage I shall paste my stuff under the section for current jobs, Look forward to your critiques, thanks :)
