A tree? A person in a tree? Not quite "Spectacular" yet.

yup..not quite spectacular.

A small color study. The tree itself will be the event of spectacular, being disassembled by some sort of energy. I'm envisioning the piece itself going from high intensity/energy at the top..and transitioning into calm towards the bottom. The person in the tree will be a middle ground in this disruption of space. Neither calm or freaking out, mostly unchanged by the event.and maybe even in control of it. This juxtapostion, I feel, will bring out a level of uncomfort for the viewer, making it spectacular...without being cliche. Please tell me what you think.

which is the focus of 'spectacular' in your concept??

I want to see more..:)

oldasold

Thks for the replies! The focus of the spectacular will be the destruction/disassembling of the tree....trying to figure that part out without dropping a bomb onto it. I have some ideas..but they won't start to make sense until I start refining it.

cool work so far, i agree that the energy/light should make for a spectacular image. Although perhaps you could add in a more solid base for the tree roots as it looks odd hanging there.

this is awesome!

maybe its just me, but I think it kind of has a feeling of a bullseye layout, with everything kind of falling into the middle, and it might help to take it off center a touch. Maybe, I dunno though. Dont destroy what you have just because I said that though.

ok, i'm thinking it's starting to be a little more spectacular. Large meteor ripping down through the center of the tree..light emmitting through branches...smaller meteors falling, striking ground around. What do you think? Thks

This is looking very pretty. Even though i really like it, I think we should see less of that giant bright sphere... its stealing the focus of the image, in my opinion. and since its too bright to look at, its not a nice feeling when your eyes are pulled towards it..

I hope what i say is understandable :)

oldasold
09-18-2005, 06:20 AM
thks silveraxe. I think your right.....i'm trying to find that balance right now, make it "spectacular", and still keep attention to the figure. I think once I render the meteor/glowy sphere thing into the middle of the tree, and surrond it with branches it might help...maybe.

interesting concept man! it's looking great! the neon blue is cool, it gives a great contrast between the tree that wouldn't normally shine like that, quite mysterious.

I didn't read your whole thread so maybe I missed this, but I don't really get why there's a guy in the tree, he looks cool tho and you really should keep him in there.
Maybe there should be more people in the pic, kinda like there's this once in a millenium event taking place and everybody is gathered around and worshipping it or something, just a thought tho.

Keep it up!

Hey,

Interesting work here, rather uncliched !
Your tree is beautiful, and the pose of the character is serene, thoughtful.
If you manage to push at its best the contrast between serene pose and spectacular blue phenomenon, it can be a top notch work.

Good luck.

By making all things move in the wind (hair, clothes), the sketch gets a lot of energy..

Wow! I love this concept! I love the fact it's not a traditionally narrative piece, there IS a story here, but not like any story I've come across before, which is why I like it. The contrast between the two parts of the image is very spectacular, and once you get all the details into the branches of the tree it should be amazing. The tree is looking good texture-wise, but it looks like the structure is quite flat, is that intentional?

Either way, kudos to you, it has a bit of a Brom feel to it, the way he would sit his figures. Best of luck with this.

oldasold
09-20-2005, 05:37 PM
Thks for the comments everyone! Yes, the tree is quite flat at the moment...it's that awesome outline around it, which will be disappearing in the near future. I'm also nowhere near done building values through it. The story behind this piece is being constructed currently. Basically, this passive and indifferent character in the tree is bringing on a "spectacular"ly destructive event.

I love the close up! The coloring is great! Especially the tree bark is beautiful.
I also love the sketch where the branches are breaking apart in a mechanic way...
You could hide parts of the glowing sphere behind branches and leaves maybe? :P to avoid eye-hurting hehe..

ah, I love the flying leaves on the top of the tree!! They give the whole image a nice movement and dynamizm even though they only cover the top part of the canvas. They make a good contrast with the guy's passifism! Beautiful!

interesting, i never noticed the flowers before O_o
I really like them too, its like, they are responsible for the colors of the image. It feels like if someone wants color, they'd ask them first for their permission. They're like "guardians of colors"... I don't know why I said that but they just gave me that kind of feeling... :)

hello KITTNLITTER..i love your work man!! very nice composition..just a little thing..maybe try to put your character on another position..more "spiritual" maybe..it's just a personal feelling, but when i look at your picture ,I do not have the feeling that the character is indisociable remainder of the magus. what I want to say it is that it does not occupy an essential place in your composition.so maybe if you put him in "meditation"(it's just a exemple), he could take a more important place on your work...

Anyway..it's a beautiful work! your effetcs look very great! i like them! keep goin' on man and i will come forward see your next step. keep it up!:)

really like the concept and colors in this painting you have a great start. I think that it might look better and more dynamic if you were to make the tree less symetrical and move it and the figure to one side and have the clouds in a general diagonal shape instead of a vee shape.
As the composition is now it is very static and the eye is pulled immediately to the center of the painting. You might want to try this and see what you think. I really like the figure and costume alot!:)

I like the image this is one of my favorites so far. But there is something that doesn't fit. The tree and the man are well done but it still looks like a sketch and the rest of the image looks more realistic. I know you are still working in the painting, but just in case you don’t notice it.

I gave myself a strange set of rules/ideas in the beginning, and wasn't quite sure where i would end up. I hope to have created chaos and destruction, while maintaining a passive and indifferent figure. Thks everyone for the questions and comments. It's been really fun, and I'm glad to have joined the CG Society. Thks and good luck to everyone with the challenge!

Here is a poem I wrote to accompany the piece:

CARBON

Tangible death,
rushing from the root.
Answering to the sky,
a carbon truth.
Peeled and flowing,
sliding through the bark,
untouched unharmed,
blatent and loathing.
Tell me why the flowers keep swaying?
Do they feed from the shadows?
Does he know they're growing?
Eyes fixed,
thoughts bind.

This is the bOMb! This is utterly unique, authentic...and you wouldn't have thought that would fit the challenge theme. This is the bomb and it ought to be 1st place.

I wish I was one of the judges... :wip:

Seems like a befitting image for a melancholic Board of Canada track :)

great work mate, excellent coloring and concept, and of course, choice of colors.
