September 1° of 1939 at down, the German Armed Forces undertook by air and field the most frightful attack that the world never had been able to contemplate: the Blitzkrieg.

The ambitions of the Führer had begun and in less than three weeks he had seized of Poland. The empire of the Third Reich gave beginning at the greatest war of almost six years in the world: World War II. In a few time, with new strategies and thousand of military equipment, the Nazis also seized of France, Denmark, Norway, Holland... Europe seemed to succumb under the powerful the Panzers and the surprise attacks of the Luftwaffe.

Two fronts of battle was formed: the Allied, conformed by 47 countries, like England, France, Russia and the United States, and the Axis conformed by Germany, Italy and Japan. The beginning for the Nazis was successful, but Hittler committed several serious errors in his strategy and campaigns, one of them was try to conquer Russia.

The United States was forced to enter at the war after the attack mounted by the Japaneses in Pearl Harbor. After several campaigns with the allied, the 6 of June of 1944 disembark in Normandia the most powerful amphibious operation of the history. With this event, the defeat of the Germans was almost sure.

The Allied army crossed Europe, recovering the countries conquered and moving the Nazis towards Germany. In the first days of February, the allied army entered in Germany over Rin, Hamburg, Lübeck and Nuremberg. The victory was imminent, but still small groups of Nazis ready to fight until the death, being made new arms that could ensure the victory, like the V-2 missile and the immense Panzer Fusion, but these arms arrived late too much.

When a reconnaissance group of the allied arrived at Munich, only with Jeeps and basic armament, they were face to face with one of the few powerful Panzer never constructed. Without support, 12 soldiers fought against the Panzer and Nazi soldiers. In the middle of the battle, a Nazi discovers a hidden mother and her small son in the rubbish. The Nazi assassin the mother and the boy flee running. When noticing of this, a allied soldier runs to rescue the boy of being coiled by the Panzer, while their companions cover him, but the resistance is bigger, and when he doesn’t find another exit, he gives his own life in a Spectacular act to save the life of the boy, because doesn’t matter what race is, or what religion preaches, to save a boy is to give hope for the future.

At the end of the war, more than 55 million men, women and children were killed, many of them by the ambition, but other many, with the hope to obtain a better future for they sons.

The war is something that makes shake to anyone by its violence and waste of lives, but, being in the middle of a battlefield and give the life for something that really worth, is one of the more Spectacular scenes of the real world.

Well, here we go.
This is a quick sketch about my concept for this challenge. It's a scene of the World War II. The 'history' is about a kid that his mother was murder and the nazis try to kill the children, but a soldier pick up him and he's shoted. The 'Spectacular' is the war for itself.. well, I have the image on my mind, I'll try to develop it of the best way that I could =P

Any C&C is wellcome...

Hey Adrian!

It's good to see that you're off to a good start my friend. I'm hesitant to say to much in terms of criticism of your current work, because it is still a first sketch/brainstorming idea. However, I will offer the following: 1) Pay particular attention to keeping your perspective under control as you flesh this out. Poor perspective will weaken the impact of your piece; 2) Imagine that you are a film director and from this perspective consider what camera angle to use and also how to best crop the image for the greatest and most dramatic effect. (For example, you can crop the picture so that not all of the people are completely framed in it. You can crop the hero so that only the upper two thirds of his body and the child are shown, making him closer to the camera and indicating a more dramatic movement.). Well, I may have said too much, but I think these concepts will prove useful as you go through the exercise of developing your composition to its fullest.

Great start! I will check back in with you in the future.

Regards,

Hiya Adrian,

Good start, you may want to find some Panzer references if you are to do historical content. Maybe a lower angle to give the Tank a more menacing look and that would open the view for the british bombers and maybe paratroopers.

I have an idea what about the tank comoing through the loungeroom, not something ya see everyday....LOL

Just some thoughts...

Ducklator,

You have a good concept, it could be really full of emotion.....grab you by the throat.

I think that one of the biggest challenges you will have to face is the historical accuracy of the imagery.

I would really recommend that you look at the works of a renowned military artist James Dietz for some reference. He specialized in illustrating scenes from World War II.

Can't wait to see the next iteration of sketches as you continue developing your idea.

remember to stick to solid perspective with that tank. Your pic is a bit cluttered at the moment, that is, eye doesn't know where to focus.

This is just an example, change the pic ratio to portrait, height greater than width, put the shot soldier in front of the camera with shocked expression.. he's just shot from behind, and then the tank's directly behind him.. or something. Just make sure you have just 3 things at most where the eye should focus, it will keep the pic nice and simple, yet dramatic.

mmm... I think I agree with frozzt, the perspective with the cannon and the 3 smaller cilinders looks a bit strange... for example, the 3 ellipses at the end of the 3 small cilinders have different shapes ,and also, like frozzt said, all of the other ellipses should have the same shape... you could just draw one and copypaste it... but well, it's just something small, the "body" of the tank looks veeery good with all of those details... good work

Thanks for comment, you have an interesting graphic style, you might need to fade some parts to create depth. I will have a new update soon with a new composition.

hey.... thanks for repply. the color is just a 'reference'... I hope to finish all the final sketch soon, to make the line art, and after that all, star with the real coloring... I have many things to do in the university, but I give it the necessary time to do a better job:thumbsup:

Is the top image yours? Got a little confused since you posted a photo of a city in ruins aswell.. If it is.. great job!

A battle in a city or a bigger field? Its a matter of taste but also with different possibilitys... I like battles in forrests and citys better then on a field! In a city you can place soldiers hiding behind walls, make granades blow walls into pieces and such to create chaos and action... Think about the different possibilitys of the two environments and make your pick!

Some anatomy books have sections on children's proportions, cant think of any titles, but I'm sure the major book chains should have some samples. In general children's heads are bigger and their limbs shorter, even their facial features have different proportions from adults, for example their eyes are large and their noses small. I am speaking in very general terms a good anatomy book will make it clear. Good Luck.

Hi Ducklator

While looking at your picture, I think you should get rid of the perspective problem.

- If you're using vector graphics, why not going to the extreme ? Let me explain my point of view : I see your work as a pop-up book. When you open it, there 's a fake 2D scene instead of a flat picture. Your picture could be like a child book, without too sophisticated drawings.

I don't really like the actual background. It's a little too heavy in my opinion. :p

Okay, this was just a friendly thought. If you think I'm not very clear, plesase let me know.

Cheers and keep the good work

In regards to the layered document. When you flatten some layers, save new version of the doc. so you keep the layers just in case you need to go back. It works wonders for me. Much more when I finish the background, I flatten that baby save a new version so I can keep on working on top without having a gazillion layers.

i think it would really help your picture to make it seem a bit more random. the ground and buildings have the same brick texture, and certain parts look too uniform. one thing that i think is keeping it looking this way is the color choice which seems very basic. also, what about secondary lighting?

Hi Adrian,

It's been a while since I last checked on your progress. It looks like you're doing very well in moving your work forward. Good job my friend!

In addition to all of the excellent crits you've gotten so far, here's some of my suggestions to improve your painting (sorry if I repeat anything previously mentioned by others):
1. Correct your perspective. The vanishing point for the sidewalk and that for the buildings on the left don't look to be the same. Also, the bricks in the street that are closer to the foreground or viewer should look bigger than those that are further in the distance. This can be achieved by merely making the distance between rows of bricks largest in the front and slowly decreasing them as you go back into the background.

2. About color. Color and definition of objects in the distant background should be more subdued. This will create the effect of more volume in your painting. Careful though. This can be somewhat tricky to manage.

I also recommend considering an adjustment of the tank and uniform colors to a slighly more subdued green for better realism. In addition consider using some of the cast light from the moon (or whatever the light source is in the left distant background) on the left side of your tank. Putting more of this cast lighting on the soldiers and bricks of the road will also help to unify your composition. It can also be used to some degree in the shadow areas of the buildings.

Do you intend to have a third light source in front of the soldiers? I assume not and that it is just the by-product of an incomplete stage of the painting.

Anyway, you wanted some "hard" crits, so here they are. I hope you find them useful. Best of luck and I think your are truly doing quite well so far.:buttrock: Now I best stay quite and put some of the same effort into my own work.

*I'll try to change the perspective (I forgot how I made it:banghead: but I'll try to improve it:thumbsup: )

*The color... mmm... I think that I understand your point... I'll try follow your tips... you are talking about the second building and the fire, aren't you?:hmm:

*The light... I suppose that these light sourse is far to give shine at the tank, but I give more lighting on it... oh! I'll make a 3dr sourse of light... in the headlight of the panzer... I'll change too these 'converse' (hahaha) for a... mmmh.... a burned car, I think... perhaps, I haven't idea how to make the soldiers.. I mean, the color, the shadows, light, etc...

I made few changes... (because I was working in graphics of publicity) but I changed the texture of the soldiers' clothes (only the texture), the three pipes of the panzer needs real color, I changed the ground and the first helmet (I added a photo of his girlfriend, that is my 'Wampiruzy' image) and.... it's all....

hi mate! i agree with TM about the vanishing point. try to scale town the sidewalk, that will fix it.maybe its only my screen, but i think the whole piece is a bit dark atm

a nice way to slove it could be adding some haze, dust, fog, that helps the athmosphere as well as it makes the tank interact better with the environment.
also, a battlefield is propably the dirtiest and fogiest thinkable environment, so i think it would fit in :)
to make it easy to tweak the light, make a jpg of your piece, wich you ad on top with layer option luminosity and ad a 50% grey layer under it, so its easy to work on the values.
hope that helped :) keep up your great work, and rock on on your final run in those 6 days of rush :) go go go!!!:buttrock: :wip:

Terminaste!

Adelante y mucho exito!
